My mom died from a rare autoimmune disease that I have a 50% chance of inheriting. Her symptoms? Sudden hearing loss, tremors, & short-term memory loss. Exactly what I am experiencing. He told me my sudden glaucoma was caused by Lasik surgery last year & my sudden hearing loss by sleep apnea! That is just outrageous information from a specialist. Never mind my genetic predisposition to an autoimmune disease. He just ignored that and told me that it wasn't important. Yes, you read that right. He stated that Lasik surgery caused my glaucoma. He stated that sleep apnea caused my hearing loss. All of my neurological issues have manifested in a 4 month period of time, all of a sudden. He ordered zero tests & just wanted to know what other drs had told me might be wrong. Told me to come back in 6 months to give him results of tests other drs have ordered. So why bother going back to him at all? He somewhat treated one SYMPTOM of what is wrong with me, hand tremors, he did not bother to try to DIAGNOSE my issues. Just to come back and let him know what other drs come up with. He should have ordered tests himself or referred me to a dr. who is more of an expert, not spin me off with Klonopin. The 2 hour wait time was completely unacceptable. Bedside manner very uncomfortable. No level of trust in this dr. because he honestly did barely anything, did not explain too much, seemed rushed. The other dr. working under him then told me that my insurance would never cover genetic testing and she knew this as a fact. Except my insurance actually DOES cover genetic testing, you just have to do more paperwork. This dr. did not care enough to order any tests whatsoever to try to get to the root of my sudden hearing loss, sudden glaucoma, tremors, and memory loss. Nothing. Just leaves me hanging with come back in 6 months and let him know what other drs have told me was wrong. He could of at least tried. He did not, he did nothing, it was a huge wasted visit and again, the 2 hour wait time was outrageous. The rest of the staff and that hospital are 5 star, unfortunately this dr. was not.

He was upset that he hadn't seen me sooner. He knew exactly what was wrong and what needed to be done quickly. 2 weeks after my 1st appointment, I had surgery. His office staff was professional and had the pre operation procedure to get you prepared. Surgery went great and I was kept the night after. For once, the HFH worked well getting me home therapy and follow-up. The only problem and it was huge and very painful, was when I had my 1st post-op visit. They tried to take over 35 metal staples out of my back WITHOUT numbing the area. I STOPPED them and refused to go on without being numbed. They acted like this could not be done. Finally they tried to numb it, but I refuse to go on without being numbed correctly. Instead of about 20 minutes, it took them 90 minutes with 3 different people doing it. This is more the normal level I have seen in my health care from HFH. Dr. Selfies, is 5 star. He followed up with tests to see if I was healing and cared about my back and how I was feeling. Henry Ford Healthcare is at best 2.5 stars. I have only found a few doctors that do individual medicine. Most just do the procedure that works for 90% of patients but not ones like me that have lists of problems.

I have been to Henry Ford West Bloomfield Hospital many times for outpatient services, and my experiences have consistently been extremely positive. The customer and patient service has been excellent, and the care has always felt prompt, efficient, professional, and well organized. This has truly become my go-to healthcare facility. Another thing that really sets this hospital apart is the environment. It simply doesn't feel like a typical hospital. The interior is bright, open, attractive, and welcoming, with shops, comfortable areas to sit and relax, and lovely indoor and outdoor spaces. There is a calmness to the atmosphere that can make being at a healthcare facility feel a little less stressful. From the pleasant surroundings to the consistently kind and efficient service I've received, Henry Ford West Bloomfield has continued to provide a very positive experience for me. Be prepared that Dr. Gilmer typically has long waits and is always running behind. She is worth the wait because she is the most skilled neurosurgeon for chiari decompression surgery. I also suggest bringing sun glasses and ear plugs for the lobby if you are pre-op because their lobby set up was triggering for my sensitive self. She completed my surgery at St. John's Ascension. After surgery, her nurse Wendi was very responsive to my portal messages and typically responded same day or next day. I have had amazing results so far, and my life has changed because of them.

What stood out was his knowledge and insight into treatment options.
