There are few occasions where one feels immediately welcome and comfortable as a customer in a coffee shop. More often we are greeted abstractedly, served and on our way. Not at the Mad Hatter. But that's not why one should visit the Hatter. It's a bonus. Come for the coffee. What a cute little place in historic downtown Medicine Hat. We stopped in on the way out and we'll stop in tomorrow again. They have wireless, they roast their own beans, it's cute inside, and the coffee is good. The neighbourhood business come here for their boosts too. read more

As we walked in the door, the guy behind the counter gushed a "Good morning! How are you? What would you like today?" If he were any sweeter, my teeth would hurt. I had tea (yeah, yeah, in a coffee roasting place), which was served in a little pot and made with super hot water. Great! Husband had his usual coffee drink, and said it was great. We chose muffins, which were very good: tender, flavorful, not too sweet. Music wasn't too loud, but when the place started filling up, it got very conversations, laughter and chairs scraping on the floor got too noisy. Free wifi. Great service. read more

This and the Inspire Café are my two favorite coffee houses. Right across from Tim Hortons one can wait in line for half an hour trying to get coffee and donuts. Or they can walk across the street and have freshly roasted coffee. The roasting machine is right in the center of the café and the scent of freshly roasted beans is everywhere. Slightly limited in the food department but still everything is fresh and tasty. read more

Absolutely excellent coffee shop and the pastries are great. The only thing I will say is, just like most "fancy" coffee options like ones that are done up lots and have lots of sweeteners/creamers they come out luke warm (like Starbucks) but lucky for me I like their black drip coffee's. This is a great little coffee shop in an very pleasant and historic downtown. The service is prompt and friendly. The crowd is hip and urban. They roast their own coffee beans, and make coffee drinks that are second to none. And, if that is not your style, Tim Horton's is across the street. read more

Great, super friendly staff, and a quaint atmosphere. Excellent coffee and tea selection. Some nice fresh baked treats. The staff is more than happy to custom grind up some beans for you, and has a good selection of high grade coffees including organic and fair trade options. There's a Tims across the street and it's a real shame that most people stand in line for low-medium grade coffee there when they could get better coffee and service from an independent local company just 40 metres away! read more

Walked into the Roastery, up to the till, server working an espresso machine and chatting with a customer. No greeting, no eye contact. A second server came up from the back, into the work area behind the till, placed dirty cups into a dishwasher. No greeting, no eye contact. Waiting, debit in hand, I found myself scanning a near empty coffeehouse save for two customers sitting at a window table. After a few more minutes of being ignored I left and went to another coffeehouse where I purchased a pound of beans and a cup of coffee, a coffeehouse where I was greeted with a smile, definite eye contact, a coffeehouse very busy if not downright bustling with customers. The Roastery has excellent coffee and the scent of roasting beans is quite wonderful but neither great coffee nor bean roasting heaven will get me back into the Roastery again. read more
