I have PCOS and I've been trying to find a doctor to give me any remotely helpful advice for years. My gynecologist has never been very helpful, she just gave me the usual "lose weight and go on birth control" nonsense that every PCOS patient gets told. I want a real solution or actual ways to improve my health, not just a bandaid. Even before my PCOS diagnosis I've had many signs of hormonal issues between extremely bad cystic acne, feeling perpetually exhausted, brain fog, unexplained weight gain, etc. It's an extremely frustrating and invalidating experience to go to doctors that offer no solutions and just dismiss you outright. I thought seeing an endocrinologist might finally provide me with something useful but I left my appointment feeling more disappointed than ever. I have a degree in Exercise Physiology. I understand how calories work. I also know that the human body is a bit more complicated than a basic calculator and there are other things that can influence your weight beside how much you eat and exercise (hello PCOS). From the start of my appointment, Dr. Khong was just talking at me and not listening to anything I said. If he had taken even a moment to actually get to know me he would've realized I already knew everything he was saying about calories in, calories out but instead he gave me a rather condescending lecture that lasted basically the duration of me 40 minute appointment and never even addressed any of my concerns other than to say PCOS is about symptom management which is the same pathetic excuse I've heard from every doctor before. He wrote in his notes I've struggled with being overweight my entire life which is blatantly false and the RECORDS THEY HAVE even prove that. I've been a sutter patient my entire life so every weight they've ever taken has been recorded and I can even see it myself on MyChart. I never struggled with weight until I was in my late teens and there were 2 episodes I mentioned where I gained a significant amount of weight with NO CHANGE to my lifestyle. If anything I was *more* active, not less. He never acknowledged that, simply spoke over me. His entire take away was that I just needed to count calories and lose weight. Also never asked me whether I have a history of eating disorders or anything like that. I don't but since I've struggled with my weight for a while I have tried dieting before and it was a very unhealthy experience for my mental health so counting calories is an absolute no for me. I do however absolutely practice mindful eating as much as possible and I know when I'm eating more or less than usual. Just because other people don't necessarily do that, doesn't mean it's appropriate to outright dismiss that a patient might actually know their own body and lived experience more than the doctor. They had me schedule a follow up while I was there that I ended up canceling because I truly never want to see this doctor again. I really hope he reads this and learns from it because it was a crushingly disappointing experience for me. I was very, very upset afterwards, not only from the lack of help but with how small he made me feel in that moment. It's very difficult to be an overweight woman with health concerns because it's rare to be taken seriously by doctors and statistically, many of us die because of their lack of concern for us as human beings. In case it's not clear, I very much do not recommend this doctor. Book with anyone else.

Dr. Brian Khong, DO, was very rushed and coldhearted. In his mind, he knows better than everyone else, including other medical doctors who he talked poorly of during the visit. He needs to learn to slow down, look people in the eye and stop talking to kind intelligent people like they are stupid and below him. He seems to have never been taught the skills of sincerely showing respect. Actually go out of your way to show respect to patients and staff members. My mother was kindly telling him about her medication and he kept asking to "double check" what she was saying to him. Everything she said showed up to be totally correct and he ended up wasting so much time, simply by not respecting what she says about her own health history. His assistant had a similar attitude as well, very rushed and likes to talk down to people as if totally annoyed they have to interact with anyone at all. We need to go and look for better care elsewhere now, hoping for a lighter bedside manner, with nicer people who actually care about the feelings and outlook of people's health. Sadly, it is unlikely that Brian Khong will ever see this or ever do the work of learning how to be kind to people.

This month we had an appointment but the office failed to tell me it was now an in-office visit. I would never have agreed to see him at that time in his office because my child comes home at that time. He is trying to charge me a $50 late fee although they failed to inform me. The office staff asked him to not charge me and he still insisted I get charged. You call that a caring doctor? I will never see a doctor this greedy and petty.

I had thyroid cancer, but even though the removed…read morenodule, according to the protocols, did not require treatment with radioactive iodine, Dr. Murad recommended I do it because he had another patient with the same size nodule who didn't do radioactive iodine and whose thyroid cancer returned. The doctor did not inform me of the risk of salivary gland damage that radioactive iodine can cause. Well, I did get salivary gland damage, and now I cannot eat dry foods like crackers or peanut butter. But the biggest problem is that, because I now do not have proper salivation, I get tons and tons of cavities, despite being prescribed high-fluoride toothpaste by my dentist. This has resulted in astronomical dental bills and a new cavity at least every two months. Had I known of this risk and because the protocols did not require radioactive iodine for my nodule size, I would have said no to the radioactive iodine and instead asked to be followed very carefully for cancer return. In addition to all of the above, the doctor has repeatedly ordered a test related to bone density called "collagen crosslinks." Even though I have told him that this test is not covered by Aetna because it is not considered proven effective, he continues to order it. I finally had to insist that the office reimburse me for $400 in charges for this test. Then the next lab order, thankfully, did not include a request for this test. So I didn't even think to look at the lab order after that, which AGAIN contained the collagen crosslinks lab that I have now also been billed for by Quest. The person in the office who handles the collagen crosslinks issue, Jacki (sp?), who I believe is an assistant, is appallingly slow at responding and addressing this error by Murad and his office. I will be switching to a new endocrinologist.

The Osher Center at UCSF is also good. However, you can get in to see Dr. Horowitz much faster than IHH or Osher. I think her high prices reduce the wait time. Again, she is very competent...my issue (Median Arcuate Ligament Syndrome) is rare and outside her scope of expertise. I think if I'd had a common GI ailment she would've been helpful.
