Polski Sklep, or the Polish and East European Shop as it is also known, doesn't have a huge amount of competition on City Road. There's the recently opened Easy Shop that stocks Czech and Slovac food, and the Continental Delicatessen also carries a limited range of Eastern European product, but that's about it. As well as stocking all the basic essentials like bread and milk, it also carries a really comprehensive range of speciality foods, and Polish alcohol, particularly vodka, all of which go down a storm with the local Polish population. According to the owner there's a large number of Poles living in the neighbourhood, all of whom shop at Polski Sklep. Even the recession hasn't impacted the business too dramatically, and with all of the development in the city centre, Cardiff hasn't seen a significant drop in numbers within the Polish community.
Although the number of Polish shoppers outnumber other people who patronise the shop, they still see a fair amount of custom from non-Polish people. The biggest sellers are the basics, and the cheap alcohol, but quite a few of them buy some of the more typical Polish products like the potted herring. Help is on hand to explain what things are if the packaging isn't written in English, which is probably the main reason why quite a few of the non-Polish customers are willing to be a bit more adventurous. read more
