Holy my gosh, ICE CREAM HEAVEN! My husband & his fam used…read moreto frequent this wonderful old establishment when they were kids, so this was a serious trip down nostalgia lane, complete with an old screen door & vintage interior. Apparently there used to be penny candy, but no matter --- the star of the show is their many flavors of ***HOMEMADE*** ice cream. No ordering from some larger conglomerate. Ice cream is serious business here for this 4th generation family-run parlor! I had what was probably the best 2 (really 3!) scoops of pumpkin ice cream in my life! Hubs - still ridin on memory-lane - had to have whitehouse, which (I think) was vanilla w/ bits of maraschino cherry. The flavors rotate fairly frequently - seasonal flavors are a wonderful thing. When we were just there they had mine plus chocolate pumpkin, chocolate maple pecan, and pumpkin caramel. They are so generous with their portions, too. I never order more than 1 scoop, usually , but the ice cream devil had possessed me - I had to have 2! And omg - it looked a lot like 3 scoops when it was handed over. I ate it all, too!! Yum! Apparently they also make their ice cream sandwich. ‍ I think I'm glad they're an hour outside Pittsburgh. It would be seriously dangerous if they were any closer!!! Dreaming of a return visit - which we can happily do anytime of the year, cuz they don't close for winter! Woohoo!!!

We stopped by Hughes Penn Gold Ice Cream in Harrisville and loved that it was "Christmas in July"…read morecelebration. It had that small town feel and even Santa was there hanging out and the kids got their photo with him. The shop has been run by the Hughes family since 1928. It's now in its fourth generation, which is pretty amazing. They had a long list of flavors. It was hard to choose, but we ended up sharing the flavor Blue Moon as recommended by one of the workers. It was bright blue but tasted just like an orange creamsicle. It was so tasty! I also sampled the teaberry. It's definitely an acquired taste, like minty mouthwash. They also sell milk by the container and we picked up a gallon for the morning breakfast bowls. Such a cute spot!
