I had my first encounter with Polk Veterinary Care last week when I had to bring in a critically injured baby kitten that was abandoned on my doorstep. I have to say I was blown away by the compassion and kindness shown to me and the precious baby kitten. I had spent hours trying to get the local vets office to help and then even contacted animal control for assistance all to no avail. I was advised, by said local vet, to call Polk Veterinary Care instead since our vet was "too busy and booked up with appointments" to help me with my emergency. Not to mention what the cost would have been, I was floored! When I called Polk Veterinary Care, the sweet lady immediately said to bring the kitten right on in, no questions asked and no appointment needed. I rushed over and the sweet receptionist met me at the door and promptly took the tiny pitiful kitten from me to be helped and all with no charge. When I asked about how much it would cost, I was told not to worry about it! I immediately teared up not only bc I felt bad for the kitten but bc I KNEW right away their office genuinely cared for helping animals and not trying to make a dollar. The kitten was maybe a month old and had an open wound in its abdomen with maggots infested in it. I knew it would have to be euthanized and I was heartbroken but the kindness, empathy, and care shown towards the situation by the sweet staff at Polk Vet made ALL the difference in such a terrible situation. My husband and I have decided to switch vets now bc of this experience. I have told my friends and family and several of them were blown away too and have mentioned switching as well. It is so nice to find people that truly care for helping animals and people over trying to make a profit. read more

Dr. Hughes and his staff are super awesome! The office is always clean and large enough to have distance between each pet and owner. My family has used Dr. Hughes for many years, so when I moved to Alabama I continued to make appointments that coincided with my travels home. He is very knowledgeable and skilled in his craft with great instructions for at home care. Our local vet in Alabama misdiagnosed our mini Dachshunds back problems and offered no help in providing relief. Made the call to Dr. Hughes and came back home for a second opinion, which should have been the first. Dr. Hughes performed several physical exams that day and ruled out any permanent damage to his spine. We were educated on the possibilities of long term damage that was followed up with, "If this happens, we'll do this" and "If this happens, you need immediate medical attention". It was nice to have a game plan and timeline for future reference. Here we are several years later and our Weenie dog is still spry and living life! I would like to say that Dr. Hughes and his staff are very important to me and my pets. I have been taking my pets since he open his clinic. I trust him with their lives. They have treated me like a family member every time I walk in the door. Three years ago, Dr Hughes saved my companion life when I couldn't get the money for a surgery he needed asap. He only had a week to lived. But because of the faithI had in Dr. Hughes he work a miracle. I still have Spike today. They understand what we go through with them and they help me through a time that if you an animal lover you know what I mean. They have feelings and help me coupe what's ahead. That's what I needed. They are the best every one there. It's one big family of love and support for whoever walks through that door. We love you all. Dr. Hughes and is staff are always friendly, dedicated, and understanding. They work hard to make you feel like family. Dr. Hughes has compassion for both animals and their loved ones which makes his office one of the best. He goes above and beyond to make sure all questions are answered and you're comfortable with what's going on with your pet. This is why my family and I have used Dr. Hughes for over 15 years.
