She was very friendly and answered all of our questions thoroughly in English. The wine tasting was excellent and she made it easy to purchase and ship a case home. We were fortunate to time our visit just before the harvest as we were able to sample the grapes as we strolled through the vineyards, accompanied by the family cat, Attilio. Elena's father joined us during the tasting and while he spoke no English, was clearly happy we were there, sampling the wines. The tour is one of our favorite memories of our two weeks in Italy. When we make it back, Poggio al Bosco will be on the itinerary.

We checked daily and completely missed all available reservations. Decided to show up and hope for the best. You have to park across the street and either take a shuttle or walk. It's about a 15 min walk with a hill, but it's pretty. They didn't have room for us, but said we could walk around and eventually go to the restaurant. The restaurant doesn't have a ton of options, but it's gorgeous. We got a glass of wine and some food. My eggplant dish was good but small. My partners pasta was good but small. The wine was great, views great. While gorgeous, we felt like this was probably only worth doing with a tour and wished we had spent our time at a winery where we got to taste and learn a bit.

For welcome and aperitif, we had Pinot grigio. It is slight sweet, light, fruity and refreshing. Cheese and aged meat plates were served with their balsamic oil, olive oil with chilly and truffle, paired with Rosa Rosae 2015. Rosa Rosae is dry, more tannic than their Pinot Grigio, fruity taste. Pasta dish was paired with Chianti Classico 2015. Pasta was very al dente. Chianti classico is dry, medium bodied, tannic. I don't know much about wine but everyone at my table seemed to enjoy it. Pig carre cooked with desert wine and salad with their olive oil paired with Chianti Classico Riserva 2015. I generally don't like pork but this is cooked perfectly and not gamy. As far as pork goes, it is pretty tasty. By this time, we were all tipsy and happy... so everything was great! For desert, we had cantuccinni paired with Vin Santo del Chianti Classico. We dipped cantuccini (biscotti) in the sweet wine. It was delicious! Overall, everyone in our group enjoyed the dinner and wine. The food and wine portion was very generous! The wine tour started…read morewith an in-depth class on wine and the wine making process and was followed by a 5 course meal which included several delicious cheeses and preserves, bruschetta with different spreads, lemon AND truffle olive oil made at the winery, a large plate of different meats, ravioli with pesto, a few slices of roasted pork with roasted potatoes, and tiramisu. All of it was INCREDIBLE! This meal was served with 10 different wines and at the end we got to try their grappa and limoncello. We bought so many bottles of wine, limoncello, and grappa to take home - they were all so wonderful. Simone and Manuela were both so extremely helpful in assisting us with transportation from the historic district and very communicative during the booking process. You can tell they are passionate about their craft! I definitely recommend this for couples, families, and any large group looking to have a relaxing and fun time in Tuscany! Next, Fausto the sommelier and tour guide greeted our group and proceeded with a tour of the grounds. We visited the vineyard where we were able to sample a grape and saw the barrel room. After the tour we walked up to the tasting room which was set up for the tasting and appetizers. The appetizers were beautifully presented and were tasty. My wife and I enjoyed the experience and highly recommended this winery for their service, wine and presentation.

The first winery we went to that day was Fattoria di Montemaggio. I'm so glad we hired the driver to go there. It was up on a hill off a gravel and dirt road in the far reaches of Radda in Chianti. Had we tried to drive there on our own, I think we may have given up, thinking we had gone the wrong way. However, on the way there, we saw beautiful view after beautiful view. Then we arrived and the views were even more stunning. Once we began the tour, we were joined by another couple (happenstance, also Americans) and our tour guide, an intern from the University of Florence who was very knowledgeable about winemaking in Chianti. We walked around the beautiful vista points, and through the vineyards. We saw hills, grapes, olives, and roses. This tour and wine tasting was beyond informative. I honestly learned so much about the region. It was really interesting. Our tour guide was very personable and the whole experience was enjoyable. We tried several wines and a grappa in the middle of an olive grove sitting in a lovely picnic area. In true Italian style, we were given a plate with salami, pecorino cheeses, bread and olive oil to taste along with the wine. We truly had an amazing morning of wine (yes, it is always 5 o'clock in Chianti) and I would truly recommend this tour to anyone visiting Chianti. Yes, it is a bit treacherous, so a driver is a good move.
