It has the best trekking gear and although I'm more of a couch potato Trekkie than mountain climbing trekker, I bought a great pair of boots for a trip three years ago that are still going strong. Outdoor junkies like my mountain climbing cousins don't mind paying the fairly high prices for the expert gear, but I'll wait for the sales thanks. It's well worth it, with lots of stock between a third and half off regular prices at mid-year and in the new year.

Even now, he may invite me for coffee in the Valley, we'd end up walking and talking and before I know it, I'm inside Mountain Designs. Mountain Design is the Valley is quite the store. It isn't big like Anaconda, but it has most of the clothing required for different environments. Whether you need something for below 0 temperatures, which my dad does, you can find it here. There are plenty of different styles of shoes to suit difficult terrain and they've got the good insulation socks to prevent you from frostbite. Mountain Design also stock some seriously insulated snow jackets, which can only be found at reputable stores like this in the Valley. Also, if you regularly buy clothing here, it is worth signing up to their Alliance Club so you can take advantage of some good discounts.

The store name is splashed across a banner above the doorway, with a pink and white background emphasising the painted giant, black stiletto heeled shoe adorning the sign. Out the front were a bargain 'bin' and a rack of sale items, almost all of which were high heels. Inside you'll find racks of shoes, again mainly high heels. I get the feeling the shop is owned and run by Carrie Bradshaw's cousin, who shares the passion for height boosting footwear but at more affordable prices. Most of the shoes I saw were office-type shoes with a twist, it's not a place I would go to find something to complement my latest Saturday night outfit.

Oh how I rejoiced when a decent, affordable shoe shop came to town. For so long, Brisbane has…read morelanguished in footwear purgatory - shoes are either so cheap and nasty you get chronic foot odour just from standing near them, let alone putting them on; or so expensive you want to keep them in a glass case at home and just stare at them. So thank God for Novo which ticks all my boxes. Most shoes are around $79; they take note of the trends (my current faves are the sky-high, colour block, suede wedges in pink and red) and even the fash pack rate them (there's rarely an issue of a glossy mag that doesn't feature at least one pair of Novo pretties). And they don't mind if you mess up their shop either. I got a little giddy at the site of a heavily sequinned tote bag ($69.99) and left it all, including the cardboard inserts and plastic stand, sitting on top of a pair of shoes as I couldn't be bothered putting it away (naughty, I know). But the lovely manager just swept it all away with a smile, saying "lovely bag huh?" without even a hint of annoyance at the fact I'd messed up her shoe display. Novo, you are indeed the Patron Saint of heavenly high street shoe shops.

One of the finds, a fine white cotton number with a small collar and buttons down to the navel, has become one of my favourites for its casual yet stylish look and comfortable feel. There is even a chandelier! I really like browsing in this store, it is one of a few along the Portside strip. I am yet to buy anything but there are quite a few that have taken my fancy including some cute black and cream flats and a pair of dangerously high black heels. They have a large range of decorative flats, which I really like. Despite the fact the I am fairly short, I still much prefer flats to heels. There are sensible, strappy and sparkly flats, heaps to choose from and most have at least 3 or so colours to pick from. I have always found the staff to be friendly but not pushy. It can be fine line sometimes. Parking at Portside is almost always easy in the undercover area, except when there is a cruise ship docked, then you might run into trouble.

Also, given their late Friday night opening hours, it's conceivable that you could pop in here to pick up some emergency fashions in the frustrating event that you are knocked back for being "too casual mate". I've often looked here for jeans because they really do have some of the best brands in stock -- labels like Wrangler, Lee, G-Start Raw Denim and Neuw. The salesperson was quite good at suggesting options that I might like based on my input and describing the more intricate nuances of each design. On a recent visit I noted that they've done a bit of a reshuffle to the layout of the place, creating more room and eliminating some of the clutter. I also really dig the music here -- it really gets me dancing in the change room!

For the Aussie man who considers himself more of a Euro-man, this is your place. Starting off in a tiny tucked away store on Queen Street, this deluxe men's boutique recently expanded to a bigger store on Edward Street where it can display more of its samples. Whilst making its suits from scratch, doing two to three fittings with the client throughout the production process, jeans and shirts can be bought off the rack, and adjusted to obtain the perfect fit. My boyfriend has had several garments made for him at the Cloakroom: two jackets (around $800 each), two long-sleeved shirts and two pairs of jeans (around $270 each). One of the pairs of jeans has been worn 3-4 days a week for about three years and except for a hole in the crotch, which I've mended, they're still in good shape. The only thing about them is that they've lost a lot of colour, a comment my boyfriend will be making when he returns to Cloakroom for his next pair. The guys working here are passionate about their work. I have found that they are more than happy to sit through and talk out specifics if you're unsure on certain factors about suiting. I will definitely be returning to have future suits made here. It is difficult to find a suit that fits me well as I have an athletic physic. Having the suits, made to my measurements, from scratch really makes a difference and is the reason I don't mind paying a premium to get my suits from here. Further, to go a premium off the rack or made to measure from either Canali or Zegna with the same quality materials will likely cost more. Make sure to get sized up and have your order organised well in advance. The guys here will try to have the suit ready for a fitting within 4-5 weeks. However, this won't always be possible. Once the suit is in store and ready for final fitting it can usually be ready for pick-up within 24 hours. Another tip: Ask them to recommend a dry-cleaner too.
