I totally loved the ambiance of the restaurant. The customer experience was great: food was easy to order, prices were fair, and wait times were short. I enjoyed my poboy.

Aunt Nicky's Rum Cake

While in South San Diego, I searched for a good spot to eat on Yelp and came across Poboy Shop in Southeast San Diego. They specialize in traditional New Orleans cuisine, serving up classics like jambalaya, gumbo, and Creole dishes. I decided to start with their cooked greens, which were absolutely delicious and also vegetarian friendly. After devouring those, I moved on to a shrimp poboy sandwich. It was packed with shrimp, cooked to perfection, and paired beautifully with my favorite Crystal hot sauce (though they also had Tabasco). Every bite transported me back to my times in New Orleans. To finish off my meal, I treated myself to the rum cake, an excellent choice and the perfect complement to my lunch. I had a brief chat with the owner, who has roots in both Los Angeles and San Diego. He learned to cook from family members, and that passion really shines through in the quality and presentation of the food. The ordering process is simple: you place your order at a touchscreen up front, and within about 10 minutes, your meal is ready. Quick, efficient, and absolutely worth it. The space is decorated with touches that make you feel like you're in the heart of New Orleans with the sound of jazz playing in the background. One thing to note there are no restrooms on-site. I'll definitely be back to try more from the menu. If you're craving authentic New Orleans flavors, Poboy Shop is a must-visit!

Food was good! The shrimp poboy was flavorful and the bread had a nice crisp and chew to it. The catfish was seasoned well. Mac n cheese was a lil soupy but tasted good, but the cornbread for me was a miss!! Very dry and tasteless.

11/10. the original gumbo and shrimp po boy were extremely good! staff is friendly and brought the food straight to us. they don't accept cash but who really carries cash anymore. cornbread is a good way to end the meal with a little something sweet. check this place out!

Wow. About a good a bang for your buck as you're gonna get in SD. The fried shrimp and fish was incredible - great corn starch style batter very crunchy and flavorful. The red beans and rice were some of the best I've had. The Mac and cheese was so gooey and cheesy not dry at all, also some of the best I've had. The greens, something I normally don't like but my girl is all about, were surprisingly zesty and flavorful. The gumbo was the only 'meh' item I had as I thought it could be slightly richer in flavor. The price can't be beat. I got all those items for $40 - more than enough quality food for two people. We were stuffed and satisfied Don't listen to the couple negative reviews I read from Emmet and Donne below - they are ridiculous and exaggerating with their descriptions. Def try this place out hope they stick around because I'm coming back for more!

I wanted to do a few reviews of this place, I will start with the gumbo. I saw the reviews and wanted to try it as I love gumbo and love traveling to new orelans to eat good soul food. The gumbo was a little expensive at (22) dollars which is mamas gumbo. I will say the gumbo was just okay. The flavor didn't have the taste and was more vegetables in the soup than meat. This started off my review of the gumbo. I would say giving this gumbo 2 stars just based on taste and meat in the gumbo. The red beans and rice by far was the best selection from this place. The taste was good and seasoned very well. The shrimp and oysters combo plate was okay just regular fried seafood not with a particular taste to the seasoning. My rating of food would be red beans and rice, shrimp and no gumbo if I revisited for food. The shop was clean and service was okay as the guy wanted to charge me for sauces after spending almost 200 dollars at this place. The owner made it right and gave me sauce. In addition, we ordered the shrimp po boy and it was good. The shrimp po boy was good and shrimp filled the stomach. If you are in San Diego try this location for a good meal.

The food was delicious!!! I had red beans and rice... very generously served in a bowl with sweetened corn bread muffin and praline cookies for dessert. The service was outstanding! And the staff was really friendly and helpful. Highly recommended!!!

My mother and I went into this restaurant around 12p-1230p for lunch today to show support of a black owned business and celebrate Juneteenth; we were NOT disappointed! The server and chef who attended to us today were the absolute sweetest people. They were able to help us with all our questions and concerns; great service! AND the food was phenomenal! My mom and I ordered 4 dishes between the 2 of us and also ordered a bunch of dessert for the end. We were absolutely stuffed and took home leftovers with our desserts. There is a really vibrant wall mural depicting Bourbon Street and Mom and I now want to go to Louisiana! The music was fun and had really neat wall decor! I think the prices are pretty reasonable and the food is filling. This was our first time visiting and I definitely want to go back! Thanks for a great first impression!

Chicken Etouffee - Delicious

OMG! This place is an ABSOLUTE HIT!!!! Family owned, service is AMAZING the food is made to order served HOT seasoned to perfection and iDELICIOUS! The ambiance in the nice quaint restaurant definitely has the New Orleans Vibe...Check it out they won't disappoint..

Fried Shrimp Poboy

Today was my first time trying poboy shop and I ordered the fried shrimp poboy, Grandmas gumbo and a side of macaroni and cheese. The Mac and cheese was a waste of my money and their time. Im talking about str8 garbage , it smells weird and is very wet/watery also taste disgusting like old hot milk or heavy whipping cream with no flavor! I threw that whole bowl away. The poboy only came with 6pcs of shrimps but the shrimps are a decent size and fried to perfection and the sauce is a must try!( I recommend getting two sauces if you get the fries w/ the sandwich). Lastly the gumbo was good but it definitely needs some work, the rue is nice and thick with a lil kick to it but not to spicy it's packed with fish, shrimp, sausage, chicken, and okra. I added crab for 7$ and they gave me the three smallest legs with no meat in them! and a piece of the shoulder which was the only thing that had crab meat in it (don't recommend adding crab legs period) the flavor profile is very weak but it is good just not great. *The poboy was definitely the best thing I got from here.*

We sat inside, though there is also a lovely patio outside with umbrellas. The service was friendly and the restaurant was clean. It was a bit noisy inside since there isn't much to absorb the sound, so you may need to speak a little louder during conversation. I did find the lunch menu to be expensive. We came here to celebrate my sister's birthday, and everyone seemed happy with their dishes: a shrimp po' boy sandwich, pulled pork sandwich, and pasta with tomato cream sauce and shrimp. I ordered the chicken po' boy sandwich. The sandwiches were served with seasoned fries, but unfortunately the fries looked and tasted like they had been sitting for a a while--dry and not very fresh. My chicken po' boy was disappointing. The sandwich had tomatoes and some iceberg lettuce, but no sauce, which made it very plain. While the chicken itself was tender, it lacked flavor and the overall dish felt like it wasn't prepared with much care. For a $21.50 sandwich that was essentially a few pieces of chicken breast with tomatoes, lettuce, and old fries, it felt like an expensive mistake. Perhaps other dishes on the menu are excellent. However, having grown up with a father who was a top chef, I tend to notice when simple dishes--like sandwiches and fries--aren't executed well. These are usually some of the easiest things to get right, which made the experience even more disappointing for me.

The place itself is chilly, clean, and comfortable. I've been to many crab boil spots where it's humid and sticky, but this one was the complete opposite. It has a great mom-and-pop vibe, and the servers were very attentive. Food came out fast too. I believe they offer all-you-can-eat on Monday, Wednesday, and Friday, which is a huge plus. Owner correct me if i got the days wrong. Between the four of us, we had beers, lobster tail, king crab, unlimited crab boil, and tip, and it was only around $300. That's very reasonable considering the quality. Definitely not cheap food, but high quality at a fair price. I'd definitely come back. As I was leaving, I noticed customers walking in with big smiles maybe the munchies ahem ahem, but I definitely ate a lot myself. Highly recommend everyone to try it out!!!

The worker was nice enough to explain and the rules are clear on the AYCE menu. Friendly heads up that all parties in the group need to be doing AYCE at the table. The bag is shared amongst the table, so it is difficult if you and your party like different sauces. I enjoyed all seafood in my bag (mussels, clams, shrimp). We did a total of two "full rounds" with the maximum amount of seafood that we could order in that round, along with the miscellaneous sides and add ons. The eggs and corn were delicious and helped retain that saucy flavor. I do not recommend the French fries, that did taste like freezer food and it did not hold a nice after taste. Surprisingly one of the tasty things was the fried shrimp! The parking is very limited so I can see this as a potential issue to many. The biggest party seems to be a table of 8, as the restaurant is not that big. I would come here again if I was in the area.

The best seafood boil in all of San Diego in my opinion, and I've tried many places (yes, including…read moreCrab Hut). The main reasons why this is my top spot are: -Seafood Quality - the clams here are BIG and don't fall out of the shell, and the shrimp is always perfectly cooked and not mealy. The crab clusters are big and juicy as well. -Sauce - I always get the Torpedo Sauce (the house mix-of-all-of-them sauce) but instead of just tasting like garlic, lemon, old bay, "the sum is equal to more than the parts". In other words, the flavors meld together and are magical. I have heard some say that the sauce here leans sweet, and it definitely does have sugar, but I find it balanced. Also, it is mostly emulsified and does not have a thick layer of pure oil that runs off the seafood like some places' sauces. -Other Factors: they used to have a free fries deal for posting on social media (gone as of Feb '26 though), but they still have $1 oysters on some days, I like their fruit tea pitchers which are great for large parties, and they also give free Vietnamese chè for dessert! I rank this higher than Crab Hut because a) it's cheaper, Crab Hut is expensive even for seafood boil, and b) I prefer the sauce here. But Crab Hut is also S tier in San Diego so you can't go wrong with either.

The flavor overall was really good--the sauce had a nice depth and was well-seasoned. That said, the shrimp and crawfish were unfortunately overcooked and came out pretty mushy, which took away from the experience. With seafood, texture really makes a difference, so that was a bit disappointing. There's definitely potential here because the flavor is solid, but hoping for better execution next time.

That said, a few things brought the experience down. The staffing was clearly not enough for the volume of guests -- as the night picked up, service noticeably slowed, and it felt like the waiters were stretched thin through no fault of their own. That's a management issue. The sausage portion options are oddly limited too -- only a half pound or full pound, nothing in between, which feels unnecessarily restrictive. Biggest miss: the calamari.
