I called the customer service hotline for Union First Market Bank and explained the situation I was…read morefacing about a $600 visa debit card purchase I made for items that I never received. I was told by the representative that it was something I could dispute based on the grounds that I paid for goods or services that I never received. I was also told the time frame in which I had to file such a dispute was 6 months. She said I would need to physically go in to a branch to sign documentation to dispute the claim. I went in to a Union First Market Bank branch in Warrenton, Va, on Wednesday, July 9, 2014 for this purpose. The young woman who helped me did not know how to find the correct forms or how to fill them out. She called someone else for guidance. After finding the appropriate forms she had me sign them and said she would fill out all the information needed and submit them. I never received any correspondence from the bank about this issue. I called customer service again on Saturday, July 26, to find out the status of my dispute. The woman I spoke with said there was nothing on my account about a dispute. She assured me she would email the department of the bank that handled disputes and I should hear something from them on Monday, July 28. I never received any correspondence from the bank and called customer service again the following Friday, August 1. The woman I spoke to said she would email the manager of the branch in Warrenton that I went in to to file the claim in the first place and she assured me I would hear from her the following day, Saturday, August 2. However I never received a call. I called customer service again on Monday August 4 and again was told that I would be contacted the following day by the branch manager of the Warrenton branch. I received a call from a branch manager named Patti on Tuesday August 5 asking me to come in to the branch again to sign the correct paperwork to file the dispute. I again visited a branch in Warrenton and signed another dispute form on Wednesday, August 6. I received a call from Patti on Tuesday, August 12, informing me that the dispute was denied and the bank would not refund the money. The grounds for the refusal is that I had 60 days to dispute the transaction and that time frame had passed. However this 60 day limitation they kept describing is only for unauthorized charges and does not apply to this situation. All across the board these people, over and over, dropped the ball when dealing with this situation and in the end refused to help me. I have held an account with this bank for 14 years. I am appalled at the way this was handled and am now kicking myself for not taking my business to a larger national bank that would have already issued me a refund. I discourage anyone from banking with this institution. Take your money elsewhere! They are not the COMMUNITY BANK they claim to be! Their lack of compassion and refusal to help a loyal customer proves it!

And the Fat Cats get Fatter!…read more The staff, management, interest rates, unacceptable charges... all of these are below par, but if these were my only issues with this bank I would have given them 2 stars. I would never recommend this bank to ANYONE! I have banked with them for over 10 years, granted all of my money is at other banks (because I like to actually make interest on my savings), I still have an account with them. I recently decided to do some serious online shopping. I charged over 1000 on my card in 1 day from online purchases, because I have shop online frequently I have multiple cards saved. While I thought I was making charges to my credit card (with another bank) I had accidentally used my union account which only had a small amount of money in it. After finishing shopping I went to look at my credit card balance and realized that no charges were submitted. At this point I realized my error. I immediatley wrote Union a message explaining my situation. I informed them that I was transferring the overdrawn balance immediately from my BOA account. I did this, it took BOA 1.5 days to get the money to my union account. The same day it was deposited I was charged 1035.00 in over draft fees! I called union and spoke with multiple employees/managers who, at the end of it all, only returned 200 of the 1035 charges. I understand that I did overdraw my account and I figured that I would have some penalty but 1035 for my account being overdrawn for only 1.5 days?!? I think it is also important that I mention that I have only 1 time in life overdrawn my account and it was immediatley rectified. I have excellent credit and have been a good customer. This is unacceptable! When I asked why my transactions were not ever declined (which would have casused me to notice my error and subsequently, avoided the 1035 in charges) and I was told that is because I am a "privileged customer". I think enough has been said here........ And the Fat Cats get Fatter.

There was a time when these folks would have easily been a 4-star or 5-star organization; however,…read morethose days are long since gone. As others have noted, the staff is incredibly friendly and makes an effort to call customers by name. But, SCB's policies, systems, and customer service (online and via phone) have become absolutely dreadful! Their online banking system is clunky, dated, and disjointed. It has quite a few flaws and they never get around to addressing them. I gave up a long time ago on pointing out issues they have that cause problems with Quicken, as I realized I was just wasting my time. You either get no response, or something incredibly dismissive. When you click on their online BillPay system, it opens up a whole new tab. Other institutions that use the exact same BillPay system don't have this problem. And that's if you do this online. Using their BillPay system via their mobil app is virtually hopeless. It's actually easier to log into their online system on your phone and use the full website - not the mobil version - for BillPay (which is extremely painful) than it is to do it via the app. Additionally, you can't even open an account on their online system; you have to go into the office. Other institutions where you have an existing account can create one with just a click or two on their online systems. SCB needs to get their systems out of the 2000's and into the 2020's! Summit also has some of the outright most ludicrous policies with some of their accounts, too. For example, if you have an Advantage Savings account, they pay X% interest for balances under $25K. But, if you go so much as one penny over that $25K, they pay (X-Y)% - a SIGNIFICANTLY lower amount - on the ENTIRE balance. We literally saw our monthly interest go down to less than 10% of what it when we increased the balance 6-fold. That's downright criminal! And, they could not possibly care less when you bring it to their attention. Nice people, but absolutely awful to deal with! I hate big banks. That's why I like to use smaller community banks or credit unions. But, if you're in the Warrenton area, you'll be much happier with Oak View than Summit. I can guarantee this from personal experience.
