I am a moderately successful professional. When I attempted to use my debit card to pay $7g for a roofer, I was shocked to be declined, as my checking and (linked) savings accounts are both with PNC and it is easy to see there are more than enough funds in either account to cover this. However, when I went into the bank and they refused to OK the debit transaction, then refused to give me the cash so I could bring the payment to the merchant, I was horrified. My account was in no danger of being overdrawn, but I had no way to pay the worker - PNC was holding my money hostage. They finally offered to do a cashiers check, which I did not wish to do, but had no other option. The bank manager - David Privitera - called the merchant to set up this payment method. I was then thoroughly mortified - and embarrassed - when he went into some explanation to the merchant that my debit card spending limit was not high enough for this simple purchase.
