Today, they hosted a youth surfing competition, which was awesome to watch -- so much talent! The vibe is laid-back and the view of the ocean is just stunning. Pleasure Point, on the northern Monterey Bay in Santa Cruz County, California, is a world-renowned surf location, traditionally defined as the area along the coast from 41st Ave to Moran Lagoon, up 30th Ave to Portola and over to 41st Ave down to the sea at the "Hook". It has a firmly rooted surf culture. We regularly spend time in the Pleasure Point area renting vacation houses there in June. We recently got back from renting a property right on East Cliff named, "The Cabin." Great rental with an awesome view of the Bay and surfers. We enjoy seeing all the locals and tourists walk, ride their e-bikes, or surf there. It's location is near Capitola, the Santa Cruz Boardwalk , and many local restaurants, bars, coffee spots you'd expect. They have an annual neighborhood festival there every June also that's very fun to attend. Over 100 vendors sell arts, crafts, local services, food and beverages. They have a kids zone, beer garden and local bands perform a variety of styles of music on two stages including Americana, Blues, Rock, Reggae and Surf Music. First timer on a Saturday morning and was able to find street parking around 10 am. It is busy with surfers and locals but not crowded on a cloudy morning. The tide was close but my child still had a blast splashing around in the tide pools. No animals except the usual birds and shells but he didn't mind. We did not use the restrooms. This is also where the walking trail begins all along Cliff Drive. It was about a 12-15 min drive from here to the boardwalk afterwards. There are several other beaches close by if you want to set up shop and hang out for longer. This is not that kind of place. We were here about 45-50 minutes. read more

Pleasure Point is a surfing area near East Cliff. When I visited the surf wasn't great. But it was a beautiful sunny summer day and even saw a monarch off season. A couple dozen surfer students were in the water taking lessons. PP is good for both short and long boarders. I saw one entry point, stairs by the shower. It was less crowded than West Cliff and I found parking on the street across from Pleasure Market & Cafe. Nearby, there are many surf shops for gears.... definitely surf town vibe. read more

The beach at Pleasure Point gave me all the feels this past weekend. And it was in the simplicity of the sandy shore hidden by the mudstone wall of the beautiful sea cliffs near the border of Santa Cruz and Capitola, that gave it a secluded peaceful feeling. There are stairs that take surfers and beachgoers down to the fields of sand below, but this cove specifically required some climbing over a few rocks right along the water in order to get to. There weren't many visitors to this specific area on a Sunday late afternoon, though lots of surfers could be seen in the water a distance away in both directions. The waves here were gentler and calm, perfect for us to stretch out our beach mat and lie in the sun in perfect weather, with a cool breeze and warm sunshine on our bodies, soft layers of sand underneath us. I couldn't ask for more than such a beautiful setting to relax, enjoy the sound of the water along the shoreline, with the clouds and mountains fading in the distance, sharing good conversation and quality time with loved one. There are some benches along the pedestrian pathway on East Cliff Drive near the edge of the cliff above the beach, even a couple buildings/homes randomly situated at the edge of the cliff as well. And across the beach on the other side of East Cliff Drive is a free parking lot (Pleasure Point Parking Lot) with a restroom conveniently located right next to it. Kids will always find ways to enjoy any sandy beach area, running and playing along the water. But I think the isolated feel of the environment at Pleasure Point makes it more of an ideal spot for couples to spend a lovely afternoon together or a respite for those who wanna get away from it all. read more

Pleasure point appears be a popular spot for surfers . It's convenient because there are rest rooms with a rinse off showers available, and a convenient store / cafe right across the street . We are not surfers . But we very much enjoyed seeing them catch Santa Cruz waves below. There are stairs to take you down the the water and plenty of railings to lean on and enjoy the view . We got a burrito from the little store / cafe and ate it looking over the ocean . Parking in on the street in the neighborhoods. It was relaxing and a pleasure to visit ! read more

Feel like getting a good giggle from your friends? Tell them you visited Pleasure Point. The name may induce a double-take, but the spot will have you doing a triple. It's so lovely, and full of locals who eschew the more common beaches of Santra Cruz. Awoke. Something in me awoke here. It wasn't some aha, hallelujah moment when the skies parted, but more of a small and sudden creep of knowledge where I understood, maybe just a little bit, about what it's like to live near the ocean and spend time there. Every coming-of-age beach movie, every summer romp, it all kinda made sense. You see, this is where a lot of the locals come to surf, and to hang out on the beach. I was with a local, but by the paleness of my no-sun-all-winter skin, they knew I wasn't from around these parts. I watched couples roll up and just sit. I watched kids playing ball, just out of school for the summer, flirting, and daring each other into feats of strength and swimming courage. I saw a few moms with their little ones, and a few older folks just reading or relaxing. Pleasure Point is a way of life. It's the pleasure way of life. The way of life where you hang a "Life's A Beach" poster and actually mean it--life IS a beach here. It's grabbing dinner and heading to the water, walking, and forgetting that you're smelling the salty ocean air, because to you, that's just how the air smells. The beach bends around the point and there are a few small lots for parking as well as the neighborhood streets. There are outdoor rinse spots and not-so-awesome toilets if you need to change or take care of business. You make your way down the cliff to the sand and you can walk around until the rocks tell you to stop. It's just a sweet little enclave full of ocean denizens and people who have this whole hang loose thing down to an art form. I sat on the sand, sunburned my ankles, and felt a deep sense of awakeness. We visited for King tides and tide pooling. The tide pools had mostly seaweed with some pools with snails and hermit crabs. Great place to take a long walk along the bluff and watch surfers. If you make low tide there is a small beach area to relax at. Parking is scarce, there is a public lot and we were lucky to get a spot in the afternoon when others were leaving. It's a great bike path to ride into Capitola as well. Just love it here. read more

Daydreams of being stranded on a an island don't compare to what I found here. Beyond what you can ever imagine, this beach offers isolated sands, smooth rocks, various tidal pools and surfing. The beach is located just to the north of Capitola. Isolated stairs will lead you to different areas of the beach that are drastically different in scenery depending on which stairs you take down to the water. Friendly seals find your presence interesting enough to swim around you while keeping a safe distance. There are random local eateries nearby or you can drive a little to the north or south and find enough good food to keep you busy for days. Great views, clean sands, and nice waters on a sunny and clear day make me a fan of this spot an then some! This is a great place to stop and relax if you are in the area. read more

Been living in Santa Cruz for about 2 years and last night was my 2nd time here. We walked along the coast and I was amazed w/ myself that I never took the time to explore nor appreciated the fact that I live so close to the ocean. For those of you that can sense the hostility in my check-ins and reviews about Santa Cruz, it's still there but last night I just walked aimlessly and let my mind wandered off. Thanks for driving out, Dave. Fortunately, it wasn't cold. I took my Sharks jacket off. Surprisingly there were hella people up and out and about; walking their dogs, skateboarding, etc. I guess I'm usually at grandma-status so being out late to galavant is not something I find enjoyable but last night's rendezvous was fun. It's different. Watching the waves made me reflect on my life. I go back and forth and I never stop no matter the outcome. We came down the stairs and got a better look at the waves. It was high tide last night... I didn't dare go down the stairs more. It was nice to get out and just chill and talk. More and more, I realized that I put too much on my plate, I critique myself to the max, and I do not know how to relax. You'd think that after being dropped off around 1AM, I'd sleep in but I was up and got to the gym at 6AM this morning. It is not even 10 and my house chores are pretty much done. I hate wasting time. I'll frequent this spot more. I need to learn to relax. There are plenty of street parking and a parking lot. The roads are well lit so I don't think safety is an issue here. I don't think we went past 3 minutes w/o seeing another human being. If you run into trouble, simply scream and run! And always obey the signs because they're there for a reason. read more

I've been coming here for years, always reviewed them well, and I think their burritos are great. That said, their flagrant refusal to wear masks, even when it's legally mandated, is reprehensible. They're literally harming our community, and they're brushing off anyone who mentions it. You're not special. You don't get to make up the rules. You're not health experts. You handle our food, and that's how your business sustains. Until you can abide by basic concepts of community responsibility, and have courtesy for those you serve, and the community you make your living in, you deserve to be called out, and frankly shut down, if you can't remedy the situation. If you refuse to do something as simple as wear masks during a surging pandemic, while legally mandated, it makes me wonder how your food storage etc is. Get it together. People like this are just preventing everyone else from getting back to normalcy, at no gain. Santa Cruz country COVID numbers have gone from a couple hundred to over 1,000 in the last 2 weeks. We have lived in the Pleasure Point area for nearly 20 years now! This last week the tide was extremely low, we took the opportunity to go for a sunset walk. Many people were out, lots of rambunctious dogs getting to play and get their zoomies out! Kids playing in the tidepools and a glorious sunset. If the tide is up people are always walking and biking along east cliff. Its a special treat when the tide is out and you can walk from Rockview all the way to the Hook! read more

If you love dogs, sitting on the bench by Jack O'Neill old house here, you will see dogs walk by every 30 seconds, all shape and size. The only few places on the West Coast that you can spot a lot of pro-surfers here. The waves are pretty good here. The sunset is beautiful. And when high tide, the ocean can blast up to the bench at time, kind overdressing to be wet. It's good place to sunbathing. A walk way down the the surf point. A market down the street for you to buy food. And a public restroom is just a few blocks down. Parking is tough here for visitors, but if you come early, you shouldn't have any problem. read more

They say you never forget your first. This beach took my surfing virginity and I couldn't be happier. Simply a great place to get out there and get on a board for the very first time. There are a decent amount of beginners and vets, but there are plenty of spots to catch some white water. Overall, you don't have to worry too much about accidentally snakin' someone's wave. Pleasure Point is like driving school for the ocean...but like the kid with the cool sunglasses instead of the stupid wrap-around-your-dome oakleys that make you look like an alien. Anyway, you have someone instructing, you don't really know the rules of the road, er water, and if you eff up big time it could be a disaster or someone may just get a bit peeved. I recently took a trip to this beach for the first time, and it was well worth it. The small town that surrounds the beach is really cute and definitely has the Santa Cruz feels. There are small parking lots surrounding the beach which made it easy to park. I noticed there are some beaches where drivers are aggressive and fighting over parking, but I did not witness such behavior at this beach. The beach does reside alongside a cliff so you will have to climb stairs to get down to the beach. This is a surfer's beach so you will notice that there are a lot of them getting in and out of the water. I would advise to check the weather before you go, the day we went it was not too windy and nearly perfect weather. If you have experienced any of the beaches in SoCal, the surroundings remind me a lot of the beaches in Laguna Beach without of course the nearly perfect sun every day. They are similar due to the cliffs and picture perfect sunsets. We went on a Friday evening and didn't have trouble finding a nice spot on the beach to sit - it was not too crowded. The water is obviously cold so be prepared if you plan on getting in. We got lucky and saw a seal playing near the shore which made for a perfect experience. There are plenty of restaurants surrounding the area, and the beach is family friendly. I would highly recommend making a day trip to this beach! read more

I use to laugh at the name "Pleasure Point" but now I realize that there is a lot of things there that give so much pleasure: waves, view, and people. After graduating the basic foundation of surfing in Manresa, It was time to play with the big boys! Each time I came, the waves weren't choppy and one came after another. When the sun's out, everyone comes out to play. So be careful when you surf and slip off, there is most likely someone within 3 feet from you. The view? Aaaaamazzzzzingggg. Whether you're coming in at 8 am or watching the sunset, there's something about the sight and sound of the water that keeps you in a calm state. Oh, and if you're people watching, there's always something to look at, whether it's something good or bad - lol. People? Oh man, this is the best part, there are plenty of respectable surfers. You know who the noobs and elites are. No one bashes each other or yells when they get too close. There must be a tight surfing community in Santa Cruz or just by luck, people are just nice to each other here. But even if you're not into surfing, Pleasure Point has something for everyone. I grew up on pleasure point. It's a mix of a lot of different kinds of people. Over the years it's changed a lot. They keep building these million dollar beach houses that hardly anyone can afford. Especially if you were born and raised in Santa Cruz, odds are you unable to afford it. Recently they tore down the whore house across from 38th beach. This is what gave pleasure point it's name. Back in the 1800-1900's when the railroad was pretty much the only thing, besides farm lands in Santa Cruz, the men working on the railroad came to pleasure point. Well to the whore house to be exact. From then on it was named pleasure point. Now they are planning to build condos on this land. Probably one of the saddest things. Also a few years ago they put up signs for "surfing etiquette." This is just pretty funny. I also grew up surfing 38th as well as first and second peak. During the winter is when the swell is really good. During summer there are a lot of tourist learning to surf. Well just a lot of tourist in Santa Cruz in general. It's pretty obvious why too. Santa Cruz especially pleasure point is one of the most beautiful places I have been too. Please note if you are visiting pleasure point or Santa Cruz in general. Please be respectful to the beaches. Pick up your trash, cigarette butts and beer cans. This is what contaminates our oceans, and locals will give you a hard time (especially me). :) read more

The area is crowded and the views are obstructed by dogs, skateboarding, walkers, and bicyclists everywhere. It's difficult to enjoy the fresh air while dodging people with surfboards and toddlers wizzing by on their skates. One redeeming part recently was the unrelenting rain pounding the rarely empty beaches. If you want to sunbathe and picnic, Pleasure Point is not for you. I'd advise spending more time and money at the Facebook or Google campuses where most of Pleasure Points residents originated. Although the area does have more coffee shops than 1950's era had gas stations, it is difficult to discern much difference in flavor between locations. The main variable seemed to be clientele at different shops. One was primarily tourists, one older local looking people, and one mostly 20 something hipsters with strollers. It can make for an interesting sociology thesis in crowd conditions. The primary concern is the aimlessly meandering walkers. If you are driving, bring a snack and drink to sustain you while you wait at crosswalks for the omnipresent walkers at each corner. I've seen paint dry faster. My advice; stay home unless you need surf clothing for some reason. read more

Everything is right about this beach. 1. Dog friendly. Emphasis on "friendly," meaning dogs can go off-leash and nobody bitches or complains. Yay, SC! 2. Clear, clean water that doesn't numb you to the bones. 3. Nice sand. ~ That's important! 4. Beer-can friendly. ~Also important! 5. Nice, mellow surf for those of us who surf. Being a Venice Beach girl, I expected a cold beach w/ shitty sand and too much driftwood and maybe a wee too many hippies (no offense, lovely hippies). Instead, I found a kick-ass beach with a bit of So. Cal vibe and a perfect beach day. I may have found the perfect beach in Santa Cruz. I know my dog and boy both loved it. Pleasure Point and "The Hook" are renown for local surfing. The beach is at the base of the cliff along East Cliff Drive, halfway between the Boardwalk and Capitola. The beach is dog friendly but leash laws are strictly enforced. Man vs. Nature is nowhere more evident than here, with the encroaching vacation homes challenging the eroding cliff until the next big slide. If surfing or watching surfers is your thing, you'll give this beach 4+ stars! Otherwise, it's a nice place to walk or ride your bike, though East Cliff is a narrow street that could do with a lot less traffic. Drive all the way across Los Gatos and down 1 almost to Capitola, then exit at 38th. Keep going all the way into town and follow signs to the parking area. You'll come up on the cliffside overlooking the best breaks on Eastside Santa Cruz. There's a small parking lot at the south-most point with restroom and showers. Straight across is the Hook, where a steep stairway leads you down to a smooth rock-bottom kelpy curving break loved by shortboarders. The waves roll in and jack up fast here, and it's a great spot to test your skills. Walk or paddle farther up, and you get to Inside's Beach, which is the best beginner spot in NorCal I've found (I never liked Cowell's... too crowded, too hit and miss). The longer waves roll in from the far north point at Outsides and mellow out by the time they get here. Get a longboard and leave your ego at the beach. Pick a spot and smile and talk to everyone... it's all love at Insides (which makes up for the distinct lack of really great waves), which makes it very unusual for Santa Cruz. If you're a kook east-coast longboarder like me, you'll be way more comfortable here. Now you'll be sitting at Insides just staring , google-eyed, at the big swells peeling off 1/2 mile north at Outsides (off the North Peak). You'll have to find out eventually, so start the long paddle out and stay on the ede of lineup. There's 4 or 5 distinct breaks out here varying in size and skill, so watch for a while first to make sure you're not going to get in the way. Be real wary on weekends. Contests all through the summer, and on non-contest weekends, inside break shortboarders can get extra testosteroney and claim waves all day long. Best solution, paddle way out and stay on the edge waiting for your wave. Be nice, be cool, and be real patient. Unless you were born and live here, you only get the leftovers. But it's worth it. One will come to you. And when it does... I still remember the biggest, best wave I got here... I have no idea how big it was, what I thought I was doing, or how I nailed the drop, but when I found myself clicking across the face and felt the speed, well, that was it for me. Haven't spent my free time doing much else since. Update: as Wally H. from Santa Cruz was quick to remind me, there are a lot of locals who really hate when people from the Valley come in and take their waves. I've always found this side to be way more mellow than Westside, but it's still got its risks. If you can stay humble and out of the way, you can get waves. But respect the locals, and try to blend in. I got total respect for the guys who grew up here and want to keep it local. They get the waves first. Earn your way up, and you can get some too, but don't come in with any sense of entitlement. The ocean always wins. read more

This is a family friendly beach, with convenient stairs for access. Parking can get pretty difficult, but other than that, no complaints here! There are man made holes in the rock for water to flow through and make kind of like a water fall-ish thing, which is pretty cool. After the tides, shells wash up, rarely sand dollars, but many mini conch shells and other spiral shells wash up as well (see photo). There's also a market at the top that's pretty convenient too pass by as well! read more

So this review will be in two parts, I have been to this beach many times during the day and most recently visited in the evening. This beach is easy to locate, ( although I did get lost )... but that's me, I couldn't find my way out of a paper bag. Online the intersections are Pleasure Point Dr & East Cliff Dr, but the beach access was 26th St and East Cliff Dr.. There is a small parking lot directly across from the beach and there are restrooms *bonus* and showers... This particular stretch of beach access is right smack in the middle of a neighborhood between low lying cliffs , the beach veers off in two directions to the left some low rocky areas with accessible tide pools during certain times of day. To the right is a long stretch of beach which is ended by a cliff and a small sometimes a passable cave to the next beach over and if I remember correctly it's the beach boardwalk. The beach is dog friendly and isn't littered with a plethora of people... Most recently I met up with friends for a bonfire... after wasting some time being lost I arrived about, 7:30ish... my friends are there and fire is already going! The beach is nice and again close to the houses... so when out at night it's a good idea to be mindful of the neighbors... Now you can park in the parking lot but, I would keep in mind that the beach is "closed" at 10:00 and the bathrooms are locked up and the cars need to be out of the lot so it's probably best to park on the street. The SC police department does make the round to make sure no one is at the beach after the permitted time.. the night we were there the coppers showed up about 11; I think.. but, he was chill, he basically reminded us the beach was closed and he didn't even trip that we were out there with open bottles etc.. So while the beach is a great spot for the day, expect to be asked to leave early in the night. read more

Pleasure Point was one of my "go-to" places during my days as a Banana Slug. It was my therapy. Usually I'd head here after a shift at PG or I'd ride my bike from West Cliff. Recently, I brought my bf here as a much needed escape from the city and it was just as I remembered it and just what we needed. Why I love Pleasure Point: This place is so tranquil and not as touristy as Capitola Beach or Twin Lakes. There's great views of the bay and on a clear day you can see Monterey. If you love watching the surfers and don't want a lot of people, this is your spot. Notes: * I can always find parking in the lot. * It's usually colder here than the beaches west of it. * This beach has more rocks than sand. It's more of a surf spot rather than a play-at-the-beach spot. read more

I've been coming to the beach for about 10 years now and while I used to just like it, now I really love it. The stairs that used to go to the beach used to be pretty scary, if there was high tide you could easily be slammed against the rocks while trying to come in from surfing. After my last experience there during high tide, I vowed never to come back during high tide. BUT . . . they completely put in new stairs on the other side which are nice, concrete and you come down onto a beach without having to worry about getting over slipperty rocks. It's so much easier now and I would highly recommend it! Friendly beach for dogs. Nice, clean beach. Little less touristed at times, leaving a little bit more breathing air around you. Lookout spot with a bench if you want to come and watch the surfers. People crowd up here, hang out and just watch. Really mellow. Great spot to surf at, even if you are a beginner like me you can just stay out of everyone's way and have a great day here. During low tide, it's a fun spot to check out the tide pools. Parking can be a bit tough but there are plenty of residental streets you can park on around without trouble. Clean restrooms and spot for showering/ rinsing off. Rip Curl is just up the way where you can rent a surf board and/or wetsuit with friendly service and decent prices. Places to eat at are around including Pleasure Pizza or Betty Burgers which is a few blocks up but oh so good. Also there is a convienant store by the pizza place and Rip Curl which is great for grabbing something. Good spot overall and I will definitely be back! read more

Awesome beach to get away from all of the crowds and just enjoy the ocean. Waves are pretty good for surfing and it isn't as crowded as some of the other locations in Santa Cruz. I'm a bit hesitant to write this as I'm scared Pleasure Point will be crowded now =( Parking is a bit limited though. Very beautiful coast to run/bike along. Nearby cafe, markets, surf shops and many others for your conveniences. One of my favorite spots to spend the afternoon and watch the sunset. This beach certainly lives up to its name =) read more
