A whole new lingo Hack, house, button, hurry hard…read moreMilan in five years Got a call from my cousin out of the blue last October. He had secured a spot for a team at the legendary Saint Paul Curling Club and invited me in. I had never Curled a day in my life but decided to give it a go. So happy I did. First practice I fell down again and again and again. First match I was hyperventilating from sweeping for another newbie. Practice makes better. Everyone at the club has been super cool about playing with our group of novices. Getting excited for next season this October. We have a handful of wins under our belt and even competed in a Bonspiel (Curling Tournament). The tradition in curling is that the winning team buys the losing team a round of beer. Kind of torn now between winning and free beer.

I have to admit, I know very little about the sport of curling; but I have watched it a few times…read moreat the Olympics and have been kinda curious about it. The club itself is located on a busy part of Selby Avenue in St. Paul. I've noticed the club with its red neon lights; a number of times while in the neighborhood. After eating next door on a Friday night, I decided I should try to coral my friends and take a peek inside. What we found was a tournament going on. We were greeted by a woman who was a great spokesperson for the club and the sport. She was friendly and shared with us all about the sport and the history of this special club. There's a bar upstairs too that offers a small bar food menu and overhead views of the curling lanes. I recommend to anyone to stop in and see for yourself. I plan on coming back to watch a little more over a beer...or two.

There's a nice parking lot right next to the building and the place is never too busy to do what I had planned on doing. Christian, the manager, is a good guy and there are several other nice trainers there. Bridget Benson, who's getting on board, is wonderful. She'll spot me for some heavy lifts and gives me some advise and great support. A good Saint Paul team.

I would highly advise against this if you can't afford larger random payments to come out of your bank account. I was interested in trying personal training, and specifically mentioned multiple times to please not automatically charge my card. I have a job that keeps me really busy and I knew ahead of time that this wasn't a long term commitment I was willing to make. Now after emailing back and forth and explaining the serious financial spot the fraudulent $160 charge, I've been told it's going to take 3-5 business days, and if I want to speak with the owner I have wait until the end of the week. It's a Monday. And never mind their fees this cost me with my bank, they don't seem to have the power to waive my dues for a couple months. Cute little spot, does the trick, but I'd highly advise against it if you're someone that lives paycheck to paycheck.

I'm always on the fence about this location... here's why:…read morePros: some of the most experienced and talented trainers I've seen at an LA and staff is very friendly. Cons: literally NO ventilation in the weight section! I'll get to the end of my first couple of sets and feel like I'm about to pass out from the stuffiness. It's also usually pretty dirty and people don't treat the equipment very well. Also don't like that the cable machines are locked at starting at 15lbs. Why not 5 like the other locations? Overall an average location, but not my first pick.

The only time worth going is 5-8am so it is not packed, and even when packed, it is full of terrible gym etiquette. I am not even talking about cleaning off your machine after using it, which is overkill unless you are leaving sweat marks. But I cannot tell you how many times it would be packed and someone is using three machines at once, on opposite corners of the gym, with no phone, water bottle, towel, or headphones to even indicate the machine is in use. This is the same for people using three different sets of dumbbells while it is packed. Machines being in service for weeks at a time is to be expected, and even people being loud while working out, not a problem. However, even the basics facilities are rough. I went on a Friday and all of their water fountains were not working, no sign, and a bucket underneath one to catch a leak. I tried to fill my preworkout and a staff member told me they shut it off for the pool and he would fix it. He did not, I drank it before he came up to me and it tasted like straight chlorine. If I was a woman I would never go after 8am. The people are rough and unabashedly stare at women squatting. The no guests for basketball rule is a great addition, since the other St. Paul location (my old go-to) was shut down after countless fights and squad cars parked out front. It just sucks paying what ends up to be $35+ a month for a real gym that is not a real gym. At this point I see why people suck it up and go to planet fitness, snap, or anytime, while people who can afford it go to Los Canpeones or Lifetime.

That's right. They have a different filtration method here using sphagnum moss which significantly reduces the amount of chlorine in the water. There is nothing better then getting out of a pool and NOT smelling like a chlorine tablet. Less burning of the eyes and itching of the skin. A win all around. Plus they open @ 6:30am some days for you early morning risers and open it up from 5:30-7pm on other days (see website for schedule). Plus if you got the toddlers and young kids, there is the water park, 2 water slides, and a shallow pool to get them acclimated. Me likey.
