Most Spanish cities have a Plaza Mayor, the one in Gijon tends to be on the smaller scaler as compared to others.
The square is located at the gates of the Cimadevilla neighborhood, the original center of Gijón and an old fishing district. It is also located next to San Lorenzo beach, a few meters from the coast.
The square follows the Castilian model, although smaller in size. The arcades are closed with semicircular arches in two-story buildings.
There are several stores, cafes, restaurants and hotels in the square.
During some times during the year, small markets are setup in the square. read more
