Visiting Merida for the first time? You have to visit la Plaza Principal de Merida (also known as la Plaza Grande). The square is beautiful - beautiful trees, the Merida letters (to take a photo with), an enormous Mexican flag, and plenty of those famous "tu y yo" chairs (the chairs are connected by their arms on opposite sides, so when you sit down, you are facing the other person sitting with you). The plaza is also home to many wonderful attractions in Merida - the Palacio de Gobierno de Estado de Yucatan (a government building that has amazing murals), the Catedral de San Idelfonso (a cathedral with a gorgeous exterior), and Museo Casa Montejo (an old house with an amazing history)! If you are coming to Merida you will end up spending time in Plaza Grande. Make sure to take a picture in from of the Merida Sign, & the church. Check out the state museum on one end of the plaza and make sure to stop by Dulcería y Sorbetería Colón on the other end - a must do when you are there. If you find the square to hetch for you, there are lots of other smaller squares in town (Parque de Santa Lucía is our fav) to spend time at. read more

The center of Mérida where you can take a horse and carriage ride, charge your device, use free internet and catch an Uber or a taxi! The big, colorful Mérida sign is there for picture taking and a quick snack or meal is right around the corner. You will see guarded buildings, but don't be intimidated. These are free little museums of coolness! So much to see, and this should be your starting point. read more

During our recent stay in Merida, we found ourselves gravitating to the Plaza Grande every night. We loved to grab some ice cream and then find a bench or chair to sit on while we people watched and enjoyed the beautiful weather. There are tons of benches and the white conversation chairs all over the park. The park is very well lit, so there is no safety concerns after dark. I loved that the park had free wifi too - it made it super easy to look up a new place for dinner each night. And, surprisingly there were lots of electrical outlets placed next to benches throughout the park - they blend in so well that we didn't even notice them until the end of the week. All in all, it was so great to see the park packed with people - we love seeing people enjoy the outdoors and interacting with others! read more

Plaza Grande is pretty cool! Come here during the weekend and you'll find a ton of vendors selling all sorts of cool stuff. You'll also get a chance to see free events if you come at the right time. You're not into that kind of thing? Then just come and sit on a bench to people watch or feed the pigeons. I love taking pictures! I can tell you that there are a log of places here to take cool photos. read more

Merida aka the White City, aka the Face of Infinity, is most famous for its beautiful central plaza. White stone benches with seats facing opposite directions allow sweethearts to sit with one another without breaking the taboo of sitting side by side. It's that kind of place, with a history going back millennia. On Sunday nights, bands play and couples dance in the square. It's a night market for artisanal goods and the gooey goodness known as marquesitas. The shape of the churros we serve at Xoco in Chicago is inspired by those on the square; the crispy fried dough is elegantly folded back together, the two ends of the churro are like two lovers joined at a white bench in the Plaza Grande. read more

The main plaza is THE spot for great people watching. At all hours of day there are locals of all types hanging out, socializing, etc. The plaza is very safe as there are police stationed outside the government building across the street - so safe I saw people taking advantage of the free wifi using their laptops at all times of day and night. read more

This is the Plaza de la independencia, or Plaza Mayor, or Plaza Grande in Merida. Its a great little spot with cute benches for couple to take in a romantic scene and just relax. There is great free wifi throughout the park, we found it to be faster and more stable than our hotel's wifi. In addition, there are power outlets all throughout the park, and all though many were inoperable, we were able to find some functioning long enough to recharge our phones before continue to tour the city.
