This small plaza is located in the La Latina neighborhood of Madrid. A few streets converge here making for the open space where there are taverns and a large church.
According to the tour guide, the story is that there used to be a gate in the city walls here. On the other side of the gate, the neighborhood where all the prostitutes were. The King of Spain, being an especially moral and religious leader, ordered the gate closed and a large cross be built in the doorway. This worked well, except that people used to climb up the cross (the same one that is in the plaza now) to get over the walls. True? False? I don't know but it's an interesting story.
And no, the prostitutes aren't here any more or so I was told.
