This is the prettiest beach close to the historic center in Gijon. There is a beautiful promenade…read morethat hugs the beach from one end to the other and there are about 15 points of entry from the promenade down to the beach. The area is all Non Smoking, which is great.... There are lots of benches, most of them with awnings to protect people from the sun. All the clocks in the promenade area worked and there were a few street performers and music performers around. Even when I was there and I was wearing three layers (63F), there were people swimming in the ocean...some with bikinis, some with wet suits.... It's a great urban beach with lots of restaurants, ice cream shops and cafes, just across the street.

It's also kind of remote and requires a bit of a hike to get to. So generally you don't have to share the beach with very many people... you may even have the beach to yourself. Even if you aren't a beach goer, it's worth it to make the trek to the Beach of Silence just for the view from above. The Playa del Silencio is a slender crescent of sand at the foot of high, high cliffs. Hence, it does require a trek to get down to. If you do plan to sun bathe in tranquility, just take a snack and a towel. Don't bother carrying a chair or a bunch of stuff, you'll end up regretting it on the walk down. Also, leave the kids behind. This is a beach people visit with solitude in mind. The trek from the parking lot is kind of long as well. What's neat is the walk takes you through a eucalyptus forest which smells amazing.

Cuevas del Mar is a white sand beach with terrifying huge rock arches sprinkled around the swimming area. I have a healthy respect for the ocean and riptides so the big rocks freak me out a little, I kept thinking I was going to get smacked into them. I definitely would not bring kids to this beach because I'm a spazzy helicopter parent. But overall this beach is really cool for its uniqueness. Highly recommended. Sorry for the lack of pics, but I was too busy enjoying myself and trying not drown. Ha As I recall this beach had showers and adequate parking. There was not a restaurant on site, so pack a lunch. No handicap ramp, unless things have changed. No place to surf at this location, due to the sea caves.
