It's also kind of remote and requires a bit of a hike to get to. So generally you don't have to share the beach with very many people... you may even have the beach to yourself. Even if you aren't a beach goer, it's worth it to make the trek to the Beach of Silence just for the view from above. The Playa del Silencio is a slender crescent of sand at the foot of high, high cliffs. Hence, it does require a trek to get down to. If you do plan to sun bathe in tranquility, just take a snack and a towel. Don't bother carrying a chair or a bunch of stuff, you'll end up regretting it on the walk down. Also, leave the kids behind. This is a beach people visit with solitude in mind. The trek from the parking lot is kind of long as well. What's neat is the walk takes you through a eucalyptus forest which smells amazing.

This is the prettiest beach close to the historic center in Gijon. There is a beautiful promenade…read morethat hugs the beach from one end to the other and there are about 15 points of entry from the promenade down to the beach. The area is all Non Smoking, which is great.... There are lots of benches, most of them with awnings to protect people from the sun. All the clocks in the promenade area worked and there were a few street performers and music performers around. Even when I was there and I was wearing three layers (63F), there were people swimming in the ocean...some with bikinis, some with wet suits.... It's a great urban beach with lots of restaurants, ice cream shops and cafes, just across the street.

The most stunning beach I have seen (although admitedly I have never been to the Caribbean ;), set…read morein El Sardinero, an iconic area in Santander, where you can also find a very distinctive building, the Casino. This beach is something worth seeing, especially when the tide is down, and the First and Second Sardinero beaches are joined through the corner under the Piquio Gardens, and then the First Sardinero beach is joined at the other end with the Concha beach (Shell beach). You can then walk them all up and down, having 1km and 500m more or less to walk each way. You can also walk the seaside walk all along it (and further more all the way to the city centre) without interruptions! If you like a good beach, I thoroughly recommend this one.

It was really pretty even in the fall. I went before it got really cold here, so I'm sure it's amazing when it's warmer. The water is so distinctively blue from the sand and the beautiful cliffs.
