So if you cruising in there is no need to pay for a beach excursion, just pack up a bag and walk over along the Paseo de Gómiz promenade to this massive sandy coastline. From the beach you can look back over your shoulder and enjoy the view of Santa Bárbara Castle. The beach will be full of locals and tourists. Between the promenade and the beach are many cafes, restaurants, and bars for buying refreshments. I also saw a few porta pottys available. And several volleyball and soccer spots. Beach access is free. Since I walked over I can't vouch for any parking areas. I didn't see any obvious ones. Several tram and bus lines stop right out front.

Free spirits, water and sun lovers, as well as people just relaxing, having a drink, or socializing. Nice sand. Beautiful water. Not secluded or out in nature and I imagine it gets busy in the summer, but absolutely lovely. Friendly peeps. Very near lots of al fresco dining options and the hike or elevator ride up to the fortress to look back down on the beach. Eurooean style swimwear and more conservative attire is fine. The place is full of locals - they know what's up. Parking was quite tough - there is a lot of street parking nearby, but you have to be lucky. Getting there early will help in all aspects. It was an extremely crowded beach, but the beach is HUGE - so you are quite spread out and have your own area, which is nice. They also have a "San Juan Beach Club" - which is basically rental lounging chairs & beach umbrella, for only 14 euros for the day!!! It helps to go early though, as the rentals will be occupied quite quickly. The sand was awesome - very powdery, although quite hot! The water was a bit cold, but with the 90 degree weather, it was nice to tread in the water ankle-deep. To put in comparison with other beaches, this beach reminded us of Santa Monica in California. The people, the laziness, the beauty of the city, the nice weather, the slight classiness of the beach & area, the buildings surrounding, the difficult parking, etc. It was fun to drive around the area too, as their boulevards you drive on next to the beach are spectacular. Highly recommended if you want to visit a beach town in Spain!!!

The restaurant inside, called Poniente, is open to the public. We had amazing croquetas de chistorra, Ensaladilla Rusa, Bacalao al Pil Pil paired with a fantastic Montecillo Edición Limitada 2014. This is definitely my favorite place so far in Alicante. We took a tram from our Condo rental and the tram stop is adjacent to the boardwalk. Everyone looked happy and relaxed ( Including me )
