I'm shocked to see the low rating for this! I understand being frustrated when consignment only takes a few items of yours, but getting paid cash for used clothes is still more than you'd get donating. My brother and I went out of our way to shop here on our recent visit home exclusively because of this Platos' Instagram posts- we saw so many great new stocked items, quality brands and huge selection and had to go back! It had been a while since we'd been in, and let me tell you - the selection and quality of this Plato's is way better than the ones we've been to in MN. This store is so HUGE, bright and airy, and they have it organized perfectly so you know exactly where to find things. We didn't sell this time, but there was literally a line the minute they opened for folks to sell, and more kept coming. I've seen them end buying early on some days and announce it online because I'm sure they get so many interested in selling. Sellers, remember: they don't HAVE to take your clothes, and they are picky for a reason! Don't expect to make your money back on what you bought years ago and then wore a ton :) I found some great pairs of shoes: cute clogs for $12, sandals for $8, like new Nikes for $30, and a sports tank for $6. My brother found a pair of brand new Adidas for $35 and a tee for $6. I could have spent way longer there looking through the clothes but we were on a bit of a time crunch. Give yourself 1-2+ hours here to look through everything! I loved their Instagram rack of things they'd featured, and they had so many great shoes, bags, swimsuits, and sportswear that interested me. I drove 30 minutes out to West Des Moines to bring clothes in, a full bag, majority of it was Lululemon, some Nike, brand new Fabletics scrub pants, a brand new 88 dollar dress from Urban Outfitters, etc., they took maybe three things from me and offered me 41 dollars and gave me my bag back in the same order I put the stuff in as if my bag was not touched. The stuff left in the bag was a lululemon shirt, lululemon shorts, scrubs, dresses, garage sweatpants and a shirt, and two nike hoodies. I'm very annoyed and disappointed with Plato's closet. My wait time was supposed to be 2 hours and pick up at 4:15, it is 6:00 and I just picked up my full bag of clothes untouched. To improve, I think maybe don't take Hello Kitty Cowboy Boots and stained SHEIN shit or stop wasting peoples time. read more

Had pretty decent experiences at this location over the past year or so. For selling, you have to keep in mind, if you have certain clothing that you have an idea how much you want to make on it, then avoid the disappointment and don't bring it to Plato's. Just sell it on your own. They don't pay that great, but if you want to offload a bunch of clothes that are whatever, with minimal effort, then Plato's is a good place to start. I really like the quick turn around time- they typically are ready to pay you in under an hour. I appreciate that I can get in and out and on to other things. Shopping there is so so- pretty typical thrift shopping. Might find good stuff or nothing at all. The prices seem a little high for thrift, but still better than paying new prices for the most part. staff is the rudest . they act like they r better than u type of employees. they act like u r bothering them when u speak to them. they hide behind the counter and will only help if u ask and even then u have to go to them, they don't walk the floor and if they do, they won't ask u if u need help, u have to ask them. otherwise they just walk in by like they don't see u. get either better staff or better managers in this store. I love shopping there for the clothing but many times I just go to Kohl's down the street and pay full price before walking in there feeling like I got eyes judging me. Please fix and address this. Places run by children who are trained like robots to go over your clothes who couldn't possibly know one good garment from another. No one's ever nice there must be 20 employees with one person checking out. If I wasn't moving I wouldn't have done it New Allbirds New Converse Like new Chacos and gently worn Columbia Hiking Boots over $400 in four pairs of shoes and I got offered $33. The other day I know sold some men's jeans that are $199 and they were new. They wanted to give me four $ I have been told before my clothes were outdated. I went in to Plato's on a Saturday to sell a bag of clothes. The store seemed pretty busy, but a staff member approached me before I had even taken 3 steps into the store to help me. She was super quick and friendly, and had me all checked-in in less than 5 minutes. She told me it would be an hour wait for someone to look at my clothes, so I left to run some errands in the area. I got back an hour later and my clothes were ready to go! Of my 20ish items, they bought 4 things, and I made $14. I'm surprised by so many negative reviews of this Plato's, but I think a major factor is what your expectations are. If you expect to bring in a big tote of clothes to sell and leave with a big bundle of cash - you're going to very disappointed!!! They buy based on season, demand, and how current clothes are. They usually buy about 10% of the things I bring in, and give me $3 to $4 per item. But hey, that's more money than I would have made if I donated or trashed those old clothes! I always liked Plato's Closet. Before they relocated & now. They have everything organized quite well. It's easy to find whatever types of clothes & colors & sizes you're wanting. They have a great selection of shoes, purses, wallets, jackets. The prices are generally very good for what you are getting & what it would cost if it were totally brand new. Some things are new with tags & still a great bargain. I've never seen items in bad shape. My only advice, go through the purses better. I've often found things in the pockets (like an unopened tampon or sugar packets or even a few dollars). Probably should search everything before you resell it. But I have no actual complaints. Love the store & location & prices. Definitely not sure where the negative reviews came from but I'm.glad they're picky on what they purchase. I recently moved in to the apartment building above this Platos Closet store, so I decided to bring in a bag of clothes my fiancé and I never wear to see what I could get for them. First of all... The employees are (pretty much) all extremely stuck up and act like their customers bringing in clothes to sell are second-class citizens. For that reason, I will never return to this store, even just to shop. Second- their pricing for items you bring in is ROBBERY. Out of an entire bag of new/gently used gap, banana republic, ann taylor and oakley brand clothing, they only offered to buy 2 items from me. Those items both had their price tags still on them, yet they were offering to only pay me $5 total for both! I could sell it for 4 times more on eBay! Overall, I think this place is a scam. If you like second-hand clothes, check out one of the other resale boutiques in the West Glen town center. If you want to sell your clothes, keep your dignity and sell it on eBay! read more

Almost always unimpressed here. Looking at the clothes they have on the racks, then at the stuff I brought in to sell, I wonder why I waste my time? My daughter did fine a pair of Hollister jeans she loves, and they have a great selection with a variety of brands. For how large the place is, you would expect to find more. Staff was pleasant enough but not overly friendly or welcoming. I was looking for shoes, but the prices were not any better than if were to buy new. Also looked at some shorts but that selection was so small. Stick to buying jeans here and maybe if you're lucky you can find a top or two to go with them. read more

I haven't been bringing clothes to Plato's for quite awhile. The last time I brought clothes to Plato's, I brought in a ton of items that I was unable to return to H and M because I didn't mail them out before the 30 day return policy. The clothes still had tags and brought in a never used designer purse. They offered me $10 for the purse which was worth more than $50 as the least, and returned over half of my unused, well kept items to me. I was incredibly confused and I felt very taken advantage of. I tried to negotiate the price of my bag and the manager walked away from me mid conversation, taking the bag with her. This place is a JOKE!! I brought stuff in from Express and Limited along with some very nice and new dresses and out of all of the items they took TWO items and only gave me $4!! I have been here a few times over the past 3 years. First time the employees were extremely rude! I have heard of people complaining about how the employees treat overweight women. But at that time I was underweight. Came back for a second time a month after having my son. The treatment was a lot worse! The last and final time I was there was a few months ago. I was looking for a sundress and no one talked to me or helped me. After shopping around and feeling uncomfortable I finally left empty handed. I called them yesterday to ask them if they have size 18 pants. I don't want to spend a fortune on maternity clothes. His reply is we don't carry clothes for fat people. This isthe worst. They have young girls working who absolutely do not know brands besides target, Aeropostale and hollister. I took in a $200 pair of brand new Hunter boots that they refused (because they had a TINY bit of bloom on them, which is natural on good rubber) and Hunter is popular for young girls and it's not like an off-the-wall brand! I had a couple pairs of AG jeans in really good shape and a brand new dress with tags that I missed the return date on... I brought in a pair of my fiancés jeans from Badower's here in town. They bought a pair of plastic wedges for $6. I'll just put the work into eBay next time (which is a pain in the butt and why I didn't in the first place)-- I just can't believe they passed those up. I've had pretty good experiences at Plato's Closet. I've bought winter boots, Toms, and a few workout clothes, bags, and tops that all had the tags still on them for pretty good prices. If you're knowledgeable about thrift shopping, you know that every visit you won't find something great. I don't feel that the staff are rude or stuck up. They have always been very friendly and I do appreciate the low pressure since they aren't on the floor selling to you. Just because they won't buy your used clothing does not mean that they're making a judgement on you as a person; your clothing was simply last season, which you should keep in mind when selling! read more

After a huge closet cleaning project, I drove an hour to sell only my name brand clothing to Plato's Closet. The girl at the counter said there wouldn't be any sort of a wait because I was the only one selling. Great. While I waited I looked at several items and returned most of them to the racks because they were dirty or covered in pet hair. As I flipped through the racks holding my size I noticed way too many Wal-Mart and Target brands. I wouldn't have bought those brands new! When my name was on the board indicating the buyer had looked through my clothing I went to the register. I expected to take a few items home with me simply because I brought in so many things I figured they wouldn't want to pay for all of them. The girl at the register apologized and said the buyer didn't want any of my items and further explained that the buyer's reasoning was that the brands were too "mature." What did I bring? Lucky, Express, Calvin Kline, Abercrombie & Fitch... those brands aren't too mature! I could see if the clothes were ripped, stained or old but nothing was over two years old and several things had been purchased from Plato's Closet within the last year. In short, they took nothing and gave terrible reasoning. I can only make assumptions of how the buyer really operates and nothing is positive. After my bad experience, I have heard numerous stories about other people being treated the same way. Not very pleased with my visit to Plato's today. I had all of my gently used clothing.. (Some name brand some not) ready to take to the store. I drove about 40 minutes one way with 2 plastic tub loads of items just to have them buy only two things from me! A plaid shirt and a pair of skinny jeans. $6.80 is what I got. Really?! Brought in gently used items when there are clearly other items that should not be for sale with so much wear and tear! I had some items from VS, Nike, Buckle etc.... Didn't take any of it! Didn't really even give a good explanation as to why most of my items were not taken. They just said "thank you for bringing in your items this is all we can take today."This place is such a scam and not really worth the time to take items there and have it turned away. I understand that we are all expected to be patient and caring as we navigate the many inconveniences brought on by the covid 19 scare. But when my daughter and I had thoroughly "shopped" the store only to arrive at the dressing room and find that they were "unavailable" we had a sudden strong opinion that this was information that we should have been given BEFORE we spent an hour rounding all of that stuff up. I did express this to the cashier, who said that there were signs on the door saying so, she thouhgt. Maybe. So we inspected the door and the area around it as we left. They specifically did not post this little inconvenience. As in, they posted that the RESTROOMS were unavailable, saying nothing about the dressing rooms. They just wanted us to buy it all. Who cares if it fits? Ugh!!! At least check to see if your employees can read signs. Because at that point, an apology would have gone a long way. This place, in my opinion, has gone downhill. I know they are very picky with the items they decide to buy from you but it's just gotten ridiculous. I will bring in brand new items or items used literally one time with zero show of wear and tear, and still turn them away. Then I go in and see things in less than new condition all over the place. I know style has a lot to do with it, but for example I brought in brand new nude wedges, strappy, that zipped up the back...perfect for the Spring season coming up, and they were sent home with me. Their prices on their used items are pretty ridiculous anymore, as well. I understand a name brand is a name brand..but they need to take more into consideration than just the logo. A used plain Nike shirt with the swoosh in the corner for $22? Get outta town. The prices used to be a lot more reasonable. I prefer Stuff Etc. in Ankeny anymore as far as "mass" name brand consignments. Disappointed, ONCE AGAIN. I shouldn't be surprised considering they only have TWO STARS. Plato's Closet is notorious for not accepting the good selections that people bring in, but selling things of a lesser quality. For example, today I brought in a brand new Steve Madden bag, a gently used Coach bag, a brand new Coach wristlet, a Jansport backpack that was used for one month in excellent condition, multiple pairs of Nike yogas, hollister Jeans, VS Pink tank tops... All they wanted to buy was two pairs of yogas, a pair of sweatpants and the backpack.. FOR $12!! I had them relook at the purses as they were all in good condition and their excuse was, "it must just be the style..wristlets aren't selling well for us." I took all of my items back because that's just ridiculous! How are you not going to accept quality name brand items, but I can go to any rack and find Walmart brand or old navy etc. I've seen shoes that are literally curling upwards because they're so worn on their racks. I refuse to go back to Plato's Closet after today. I cannot comprehend their logic around what they can accept to buy or sell. So many of my friends say the same thing! They never buy anything!
