We are sleeping comfortably and soundly on a new certified organic Savvy (Serenity style) mattress. The mattress is a 3-layer, 3 inches thick latex. Each layer has 9 thickness options (soft to firm), that can be split on each side of the bed for each sleeper's preference. The sturdy organic cotton casing has organic wool batting quilted inside. Why buy an organic mattress? Think of it like this. Organic vegetables are healthier because they don't have chemical pesticide residues. Likewise, organic mattresses do not have all the chemicals that run-of-the-mill mattresses are made of, like toxic flame retardants and phthalates. These chemicals out-gas. So why breathe any toxins that may effect your health? Why sleep on a bed of toxic chemicals? I digress! Now to Dennis and Plank and Coil. My wife and I made probably 3 trips in to the store to test drive a store full of organic mattresses. Naturepedic, Organipedic, Savvy rest, Palm Spring, Vispring are some varieties to try. How to test drive a mattress? Lay on several and compare. Dennis is the Driver's Ed mattress instructor with knowledge and patience to help you compare the choices. It is important to lay about 15 minutes on any mattress that your are considering to see how your spine, hips, limbs, neck and booty feel and fit the mattress. Is there sink or sag? Do you float cloud like or roll around like a jelly fish? Any limbs go numb? And relaxing those 15 minutes on the mattress, perhaps, you doze off or snooze a bit. That clinched the deal for me! Plank and Coil - is the way to sleep nirvana on an organic mattress! Also, the delivery team are mattress experts. They help with the set-up and positioning of the new mattress, pads, toppers, core and all accessories and ensure your bed frame has the right support for the mattress. In our case they recommended additional wood slats between the welded steel slats on our Room & Board frame. So there you have it! We spend about 1/3 of the time in the bed. Why not get the best and healthiest rest? I believe that is an organic mattress. We love how we sleep now! My mind is resting knowing "NO TOXINS IN BED WTIH ME!" My husband bough a cheap mattress after he graduated from college. It wasn't all that comfortable to start with, and years of use and a cross country move had done nothing to improve it. It didn't help that he's a back sleeper that wants a firm mattress and I'm a side sleeper who wants to sleep on a cloud. We started researching mattress types and decided on a natural latex mattress (dust mites can't live in a latex mattress which means they're better for allergy sufferers, natural wool covers meet fireproofing regulations without fire retardant chemicals, they last for a long, long time without turning and rotating, environmentally friendly and no springs which means less tossing and turning). Knowing we were about to make a fairly significant mattress investment, we did a lot of shopping around. Good thing we found Dennis at Eclectic Home. He spent lots of time with us, helping us decide on the right mattress for us, and never put any pressure on us like we got at some of the big mattress stores. When we found a similar mattress online for a lower price, he was able to do some strategic price adjusting and wool mattress-pad including to get closer to the price/value. And as for that firm back sleeper/soft side sleeper problem? He was able to order a latex mattress that is half firm/half soft (based on the layers of the mattress they're VERY customizable) so we're both happy on our side of the bed! When it came time to invest in a new bed, I made the tentative pilgrimage to the bed chain stores. You know the ones. They have those nasty jingles on the radio ad nauseum. The showrooms are located in strip malls, fluorescent lit, with the off putting smell of toxic materials. I left each one thinking: people actually buy this stuff? Then I found Eclectic Home. With a lovely space just off NW 23rd, a warm inviting showroom, and a knowledgeable sales staff, it was night and day different from the chains. Add to that, beds that are, for the most part, made from natural and organic materials. After three visits I bought a bed, only to conclude after three weeks that it was a tad too firm. Within a day, Eclectic staff installed a koa base under my mattress. This was done for free. Following that, they replaced my firm base with a plush base layer, again at no charge. I cannot say enough wonderful things about this store, their product inventory, their staff and the value of investing in their products. Dennis and his team deserve 6/5 stars! To give a bit of context, I moved to Portland last fall for a 9 month period and had originally rented a bed for my short stay. I had to break the furniture renting agreement because I had a horrible allergic reaction to cleaning chemicals sprayed on the bed. For the past 5 years I had considered investing in an organic latex mattress because I have always been highly chemical sensitive and have an autoimmune disease that only enhances these symptoms. I Googled "organic mattresses Portland" and E.H. was the first store to come up. Upon entering the store I was warmly greeted. Dennis, the owner of the store, helped me choose my bed. He was incredibly knowledgable and genuinely passionate about his product inventory. It was obvious that he had no hidden agendas. I never felt pressured to make a quick decision or commit to purchasing anything. All of my interactions with Dennis and his staff members were remarkably sincere, professional and positive. After testing a number of beds I chose a firm, queen-sized Savvy Rest mattress. I could not be happier with my decision! This organic latex mattress is one of the best investments I've ever made. I sleep a solid 8-9 hours each night. I don't wake up with aches and pains I've experienced from coil mattresses and there have obviously been no chemical reactions. It initially seemed pricey but, for an item you spend 1/3 of your life on, it was well worth every penny. In addition to all of this, upon hearing about my problems with the furniture company, Dennis and his staff loaned me a bed frame! The gentlemen who came to set it and my new mattress up were very knowledgable, professional and informative. They even came back, when I moved, to help me properly store the mattress and ensure that it would not be damaged in the move. I've never experienced such incredible customer service. Made by a local pacific NW company called Greenington. The brands that Eclectic home carry are green and all about sustainability. I tell all of my friends about them and their great customer service. Overall a pretty good shopping experience. Wonderful focus on sustainability that's not just a marketing ploy but what they truly believe in. While we ended up buying an eco-friendly mattress and bed elsewhere, it was primarily based on price as our budget would have only allowed the mattress at EH and as we were upgrading from queen to king, we needed a new bed, not just a mattress. As a side note, our main reason for not giving five stars was that they were a bit cheap on the extras that are usually included when you buy a mattress. We were offered just 20% off a pillow for buying a $3500 mattress, and not until we considered buying a $2000 bed along with it would they consider throwing the pillow in for free. To be told their profit margin wasn't high enough on it as why they couldn't include it was offputting - especially knowing that margins in the mattress world are huge - and a bit elitist considering how much we were considering spending. Also, they don't list prices on the mattresses, which was a red flag and makes you dependent on the salesperson rather than being able to shop more independently. read more

Just this morning I told my husband the biggest mistake we've made in the last 5 years was not getting a new mattress. We were overwhelmed by the process and cost of finding a natural, comfortable mattress that was worth the investment. I can't say enough positive things about Eclectic Home. From the moment we walked into the showroom, we were welcomed with no pressure to purchase anything. I felt really comfortable actually lying down on the different beds and asking questions. Later, once we decided to purchase a mattress, Eclectic Home was able to offer us 0% financing through Wells Fargo. Our mattress arrived before our bed frame (we upgraded from queen to king-so much room!- and needed a new frame). Eclectic Home delivered the new mattress with a loaner frame, then came out and put together our new frame once it arrived. It was first class costumer service all around (with no extra costs!). We've slept so well since we received our new mattress by Savvy Rest. We both feel less muscular tension and more rested. We've had our new bed for two months now and couldn't be happier. Plus, I am absolutely confident that if we had any problems or concerns, Eclectic Home would take care of us. Uniquely different home furnishings - lots of variety. Best of all is the owner (Dennis) who really bends over backward to please. We wandered in one day complaining about the horribly uncomfortable backless bar stools we have been finding. We described some comfortable, beautiful and expensive ones we had seen at a handcrafted wood furniture store in Seattle. Dennis remembered seeing similar stools in bamboo at a furniture show in Seattle and offered to order for us. We were reluctant to order sight unseen, but he said "no problem - I'll order them and you can decide whether you like them or not." We loved them and sit in them every day. I have never experienced such knowledgeable, professional and thorough service as I received at this store. They went above and beyond the call of duty. It is the most expensive mattress we have ever purchased, but I can't say how much it is worth it. We wanted a latex mattress not only because it feels great and lasts, but also because I am chemically sensitive. I had bought one from another store in town that claimed it was "all natural", but it wasn't, and did all kinds of off-gassing. Dennis' latex mattresses were pricier, but you get what you pay for. Can I give 6 stars? Some months ago, we went into Eclectic Home as part of our search for a mattress. We instantly loved how this store just feels, and also the beautiful items within it. Staff members are invariably friendly, and the owner, Dennis, is simply a gem. Prices are entirely fair for the quality of products and the shopping experience and service that comes with them. In addition to our mattress, we also found a number of other home furnishings we really like there, and so we've had several buying and delivery experiences with Eclectic Home -- they've all been top-notch. Deliveries can be arranged with precise timing, which is really nice. What I really want to emphasize above all else, though, is that Dennis and the Eclectic Home staff genuinely care about customer happiness -- if there is any problem at all with a product or the way a mattress feels after some nights spent sleeping on it, the highest priority is clearly just getting it right. Loved this store! I'm a big proponent of natural mattresses, so when I looked up nearby stores, I found Eclectic Home. I worked with Laura to find the perfect mattress. She was incredibly helpful, patient, and thorough with introducing the products and answering questions. I also bought a bed frame here, and they were very generous with the discount they gave me (I did buy the floor model). As a graduate student, I especially appreciate discounts! The moving crew was also VERY careful and efficient. They were in and out with building my bed in less than an hour and maneuvered all the pieces carefully in my crowded studio. I just slept in my bed last night; it was so comfortable. They also have a great takeaway policy (will take your mattress away for free) and I plan to come back to them down the road when my current mattress eventually wears down (they recommended about 15 years, I believe). read more
