BEWARE -SHORTAGE OF SAFETY…read more I had a bad fall yesterday. My binding should have released but didn't; my left leg was badly twisted. I am immobilised today and hoping I do need not to go to A&E On the plus side the staff are friendly and helpful particularly those who 'rescued' me from the slope. Regrettably there are minuses:- For its size the slope gets very crowded so do not book at peak times and avoid weekends and Bank holidays Safety is compromised by mixing snowboarders with skiers. Why so? First because snow boarders take different lines down the slope and skiers often find themselves being 'cut up' by boarders. Secondly the weight of skis is split between 2 skis and one ski is unlikely to cause injury to innocent 3rd parties. By contrast a board is heavier than one ski and all its weight is concentrated in its short length. Snow boards are notorious for injuries, often serious, to innocent 3rd parties. The surface of the slope is in places almost sheer ice which is what caught me out yesterday Lastly staff adjust the bindings on hired skis to hired boots. Like most people I did not check this. I suspect that had I done so I would not be immobile like now. Moral check your bindings.

I guess this is because of both the location and that there is very little competition in the surrounding area. It is normally busy when we visit as everyone tries to fit a skating session in whilst the kids are off school. This adds to the occasion for me as the hectic atmosphere contributes to the fun. This also means that you can have longer on the ice (not that we ever need more than an hour - you can only go around so many times right?) The facilities are pretty good and the ice is kept in very good condition. There is also a café and a bar. Often there are disco sessions which the kids love. Prices are not cheap, it is nearly £9 for each individual to skate although that includes the boot hire. There are some offers available for family groups which make it almost buy 3 get 1 free.

This is open to the public to skate on when available and usually offers some quality ice to skate on. At other times however (off season) it may not be in very good condition and does not attract as many people. At weekends and evenings it offers a disco for confident skaters and people can skate round the ice to their favourite tunes and with cool flashing lights! I used to have lessons there when I was younger and still do visit occasionally. One thing I remember being terrible was the way they seprated the ice up for lessons, they'd put cones across the ice. This meant people couldn't hold onto the side all the way round and they'd have to get across the middle with nothing to hold onto. I imagine this would be very daunting to people who couldn't skate! I personally have never had a problem here- check out their website with all there special deals on. They have just had a new locker system installed - it's all electronic and done by pin code which is snazzy although there isn't enough of them! Don't think this is walkable from the centre MK, it's too hard to find, although it is close to the railway station.

This track sits alongside the existing skate ramps that have been on the site for years and are regularly used both by young people from the area, and youth workers looking to do outreach work with those young people. The park itself has loads of open flat grass and has been used for carnivals and festivals in the past, so has plenty of space to take a dog for a walk or have a family picnic - but only if this weather holds out!

Not only is it such a big park that they have events and fairs on due to the expanse of flat green lawn but it has a reservoir, is home to Alexandra Stadium and has a world class BMX park. Personally I like to think of it as Brum's version of New York's Central Park just minus statues, ice rinks and restaurants. The size of the park means it's easy to think it's not busy. If you are a young person then it's a great place to hang out and youth workers are often doing detached work, which means opportunities to get involved in fun projects.
