I attended Soma Downtown for four years…read more Pros 1. To this day, I can proudly say that I did not encounter anybody who seemed malicious or fake. 2. The theology has been sound this entire time. It's been very insightful, profound, and thought provoking. The lead pastor especially has a gift for speaking in layman terms, enabling him to reach a wider audience and demographic than previous churches I have attended. He can make a topic I don't relate to more understandable than other pastors could do with a topic I do find relatable. His sermons have been amazing stuff and definitely noteworthy. 3. I have a handful of friends who still attend there and I miss getting to church with them. Their presence really improved my church experience. 4. Nicest bunch of women I have met so far. They're very lively, energetic, outgoing, talkative, and helpful. 5. The building is very magnificent, classy, and renovated. That property had previously sat vacant for nearly 20 years before Soma downtown purchased it, and after a whole lot of work, the building has been cleaned and restored to its former glory, with several notable improvements, most notably the café and the downstairs gym. 6. The Eve of Eve service they host on December 23 is probably the BEST Christmas service I've seen at ANY church I have ever attended. It's so small and humble, yet thoughtful and creative. I feel it does a better job encapsulating the main point of Christmas than any other church I have been to has done. I continue to attend the service every year and I thoroughly enjoy it every time. I also appreciate they host it on December 23 in case I have other plans December 24. Cons 1. The near Eastside neighborhood is incredibly dangerous. Our pastor had his bike stolen on Father's Day, and another woman in the congregation had her car broken into with stuff stolen while she was meeting our pastor in church. There are also frequent shootings, robberies, thefts, burglaries, car crashes, and arsons in the area. One house a few doors down from the church had four arsons in one year by the end of March. 2. Security has also been incredibly lax within the congregation. There was a man who had been causing problems for years and would not stop terrifying and trolling the congregation, despite repeated severe warnings. He had a severe lack of apology or remorse, and he was a repeat offender who capitalized upon the congregation's sympathy and pity to launch multiple incidents. The staff's response was also incredibly slow, taking years before they finally removed him, and police had to get involved on two different occasions. As a result, the church now has security where it did not previously. It does not help that I had been warning them for six months about removing him before they finally did something. 3. One man in the congregation gave me an anxiety attack when we went out to dinner. And although my doctor, counselor, religious friends, and secular friends all highly recommended blocking this guy's phone number, one of the crucial people on staff told me I should not block his number because we "go to church together." I blocked his number. 4. When I tried to plan group events or men's events, I would either receive resistance from the potential attendees or a lack of effort and assistance from the staff. They told me that I could not use official channels, but was welcome to use any "connections" that I had, despite my telling them repeatedly a year earlier than I did not have any "connections" to use. I even tried to tell small group leaders about publicizing my events, and they would not respond to me. 5. I tried to host a Game Night for the church, and the staff declined to announce it the previous Sunday at service because they "wanted a week with no announcements." I told them that would result in little to no attendance, and they reassured me that it would be fine because it would still be posted on the email newsweekly and our Slack channel. Come game night, nobody showed up because they did not know it was happening, and it only would've taken 5 to 10 seconds to put a small yet crucial announcement at church that would have made more people aware. 6. In stark contrast to the women's behavior, the overwhelming majority of men there were NPCs - non-playable characters. They were not lively, engaging, interactive, talkative, outgoing, extroverted, sociable, welcoming, or intentional. They were basically statues with voices. I've had more interactive conversations with Santa Claus bobbleheads than I've had with them, and I've literally had more fun watching paint dry. As a solid male community is something I highly desire in a church, to say I was greatly disappointed with the lack of male community there is a massive understatement. A big reason I left is because that would not be found here.
