Excellently preserved medieval fortress in the south of France…read more Walking the ramparts at Aigues-Mortes is must for anyone who has a fascination with medieval architecture or fortresses. The circuit is just under a mile, and you can stroll where soldiers once guarded the king. There are arrow slits in the towers and along the walls. There's a murder hole above the portcullis, and privy holes built into the walls. You can go into and up top of most of the towers. They held salt, gun powder, troops, prisoners and food. The tower of Constance has 3 floors - each domed. It's breathtaking to think of such functional beauty produced so rapidly 700 years ago. A bonus is seeing the town from up high, getting a point of view not found at street level. Fair warning: The sun is relentless, and reflects off of the stone. A hat, sunblock and water are absolute necessities. (a light, cotton long-sleeved shirt is recommended to avoid sunburn) There are no facilities of any kind along the walls. Water and bathrooms are by the gift shop, but not well labeled. Go early in the day during the summer to avoid the heat and crowds.

If you're in to all things medieval, you really should visit Aigues-Mortes. I had never been and I…read morewas astounded at how well-preserved the entire structure is today. There's only a handfull of monuments this well-preserved in France and I would say the ramparts at Aigues-Mortes rival Carcassonne for how well taken care of the entire structure is. Admission is fairly inexpensive, so you really should pay to walk the ramparts. It'll take a good hour if you're walking slowly and taking your time to look at things, but you could really do it in 30 minutes if you hurry and don't walk the entire length. The museum staff are incredibly friendly and, if you speak French, they'll be even friendlier and offer you a ton of information for free rather than hiring a guide or buying a book about the monument. I was impressed with the care every worker seemed to take in keeping this monument available to the public at large. Within the ramparts, you have your pick of tons of tourist shops, Tabacs, cafes and restaurants, plus other little shops to meet all of your shopping needs. Take the time to just sit down and have a coffee and enjoy the views. Definitely worth a visit if you're in the area and have time to stop.

This place is nothing short of incredible! It's amazing to see something back home (in Washington…read morestate) that's over a hundred years old and we get really excited about a tree that's 300-400 years old. This structure has been around for 2 millennia and remains structurally sound - I feel like if they could get a waterway to stand for 2000 years, we should be able to figure out how to make a roof last more than 10 years! We opted for a group tour and despite not speaking French (our friends did) we learned a lot via those who could translate for us! The aqueduct traveled nearly 30 miles and only fell 35 feet from top to bottom. It also went out of commission in 500 AD due to calcium build up in the channel. The tour takes you through the actual waterway up top and provided some unparalleled views. We went on a cloudy day and I can only imagine how amazing this thing must have looked two thousand years ago on a sunny day. I can imagine it looks incredible in a sunny day today! If you have a chance to go here, you should do it. It's incredible from an engineering, history and general interest perspective!
