This is an amazing site given the Roman aqueduct is 2,000 years old and was functioning to bring water to homes and fountains for 600 years. The views are amazing from the right and left sides and you can hike and bike some nice trails as well. A lot of teens and families spend the day here at the sides of the river and you can kayak under the aqueduct which looked amazing. Finally there were some unbelievable 1,000 year old olive trees on the path to the structure.

This was one of the points of interest that was recommended to us on our way from Avignon to Uzes and it was well worth the stop. They have a nice modern visitors center with cafe, souvenir shops, restrooms and educational displays. It's just a short walk from the entrance to the aqueduct, and your jaw will drop upon first seeing this amazing structure. My friends and I walked all around the site and took the short uphill hike for a breathtaking view of the structure and the surrounding area. We even dipped our toes in the river, wishing we'd brought our swim suits! It wasn't overly crowded since we'd arrived later in the day, and it was nice to just take it all in at our leisure. So beautiful here.

After visiting Carcassonne, we arrived at the magnificent Pont du Gard, an ancient roman aqueduct. On the path walking towards the bridge, the wind blows through your hair, the sun is shining, and the weather is perfect. It's so peaceful and just pleasant here. Our tour guide explained the history of this bridge and then we walked under it to admire the view of the water. Some of the folks in our group took their shoes off and dipped their toes into the water. I chose to take some photos and soak in the sunshine and warm breeze. In addition to touring the bridge, they have concerts, a museum, tubing, kayaking, picnics, even weddings! The washroom is clean and there's a small shop that sells snacks and ice cream! I never expected to fall in love with this place, but it's a must visit when in the South of France.

Without the bridge, I would've thought this place was America. However, once you see this beautiful bridge, you know you're in Europe. Unless the Romans somehow built civilization in America. Definitely worth the stop. You can go hiking or swimming and you can get great photos if the weather is nice. There's also a few souvenir and refreshments. Just be careful when parking as there have been a few break ins in the past.

One of the most intact Roman aqueducts in the world, Pont Du Gard is a UNESCO heritage site that is totally worth going out of your way to see if you're in the South of France. We happened to be there during some special anniversary so they had a huge fireworks show along with a special digitally projected light graffiti show showcasing the history of the aqueduct. Make sure to bring some wine, cheese, and crackers and just lay out under the grandeur that is Pont du Gard.

Great little hiking area! Bring a picnic!

Roman Aqueduct! Walk across it! Take a little hike. Amazing this is still standing! ! Walk across the bridge to see some spectacular 2000 year old olive trees. Pack a picnic, frolic in the river. On a nice day this can be 40 minutes to a half day. Bring your sketch pad!!

Parking is included in ticket price & kids are free. Come to swim and beat the heat. Those Romans were pretty impressive!

The accompanying museum is packed full of information and I highly recommend allowing yourself time to go through the museum before looking at the bridge. By doing so, you will have an even greater appreciation for the scale and architecture for the UNESCO world heritage site. The museum exhibits carefully explain how difficult it was to build such a large bridge, in part, because the blocks were cut and fit without the need for mortar. The exhibits also demonstrate the vast scale of the Roman aqueduct system throughout the empire.

I definitely recommend spending from 30-60 minutes in the museum before you head out to see the aqueduct. Don't miss the informational video located in the cinema. Then you can set the pace as to how fast or slow you move through the museum. I didn't feel bad skipping over some parts and then stopping to read other things. They have really good English translations and a mixture of media to keep your interest. I visited in mid matcha and there were maybe a handful of other people in the museum at the same time. I'm sure it gets much busier during the late Spring and early summer.
