And yet I don't think I can add to the countless 5-star reviews that the extraordinary Denise and her exceptional staff have earned at this renovated castle. The renovation retained all the ambience of a 900-year-old castle while adding the amenities essential to a luxurious stay. However, it is the services that make the difference here. The daily itinerary is carefully planned by people who know the wineries, restaurants, and experiences like cooking classes intimately. And everyone is courteous, happy, and well trained, carefully attending to every detail of the property and services. Yet most mind-blowing is the dinner. For whatever reason, the restaurant doesn't get the one or likely two Michelin stars that I know it deserves. The menu is based on regional ingredients but uses Denise's expertise and creativity that I couldn't find at any of the many other tradition-bound restaurants we tried while in Barolo and its neighbors. I have read several reviews that rate a dinner at the Costello the best of their entire trip to Italy. So stop reading. Make your reservations!

Located in the tiny residential village of Sinio its a little island by itself up on a breezy hilltop. Since this is a restored castle dating from the 12th century the stone walls are thick and windows are tiny to keep out medieval marauders and the rooms are all unique. We stayed in room 7 on the 1st (2nd the way we count) floor at the end of the hall featuring a large bedroom and sitting area that was a few steps below the hallway. It also had two small twin beds in a loft above so this room would be a good choice for family groups. The staff opened the wrought iron gate and greeted us at the top of the drive along with the owner. While the owner, Denise (who is American) checked us in and provided an extensive orientation while we sipped prosecco, the luggage was taken off to our room. One of the features of the property is an immaculately landscaped courtyard bespectacled with colorful blooms-an oasis of tranquility and beauty in an otherwise unremarkable village. The hotel also has an amazing restaurant open only to guests and we opted to try it our first night-oh my God! It turns out Denise is also the executive chef-perhaps her primary love-and we enjoyed a memorable 2-hour meal seated in the open-air Terrace tasting exquisite delights. We started by sharing the "into the garden pasta"-handmade ravioli artfully displayed with bits of shaved garden vegetables and herbs followed by a most delicious sole perfectly crispy on the edges and succulent with al dente vegetables and a beautiful sauce of lemon and passion fruit. Words just cannot describe how good this restaurant's food was. In fact, the dining is reason enough alone to stay here for anyone who enjoys the culinary experience of a master chef. We followed the meal with a decadent chocolate and cherry mouse cake that was the perfect finale to a beautiful evening. All in all a nice place to stay Positives: -great staff -unique, comfortable and quiet rooms with great AC -great restaurant - fantastic dinner Challenges: -tiny shower in our room (loft suite)-size of old time phone booth -breakfast NOT included and at 14€ per person per day it adds up -onerous cancellation policy (perhaps they've had an issue once people arrive to this small isolated town) -location a bit off the beaten path and very few other places to eat in tiny village-one pizzeria nearby that was nice

The current owner who is the son-in-law of the original owner took our order. I ordered the pappardelle Raghu with rabbit and my hubby ordered the braised veal. The veal came with a side of pickled zucchini. I ordered a Da Mauro special salad which was radicchio, tomato, and Parmesan shavings. The salad had no dressing. The cheese was the dressing and it was good. The veal was tender and the tomato sauce was tasty. My pappardelle was good not quite al dente but the sauce was good and the meat was tender. Tasted like chicken ;-) For dessert, I ordered the seasonal fresh fruit with gelato and hubby had wanted a port which they did not carry but the owner recommended something similar but better he said. He tried it but at first thought it was sweeter than he'd liked but after the 2nd sip, it started to grow on him. The food was pretty good and the atmosphere friendly with the servers chit chatting with customers like old friend.

It's a strange combination of a children's disco with aperitifo, and a semi expensive restaurant,…read moreso we sat in the noice of a disco, and even though it was non smoking people smoked, we left after main course and found dessert somewhere else. The 2 dishes we got was ok, but not for the price. The bread was from yesterday or perhaps been cut this morning dry and tasteless. The waitress spoke little to no English, and in the middle of our meal the started to take away Parmesan from our table ?? Definitely sub standard for Milan even if the price was 1/2. Would not recommend!

Based on the photos that people have posted of this establishment so far, it looks like a dump. But walk in, walk through the narrow hallway, past the bathroom and the kitchen, and you are transported to an absolutely adorable candle-lit garden-like restaurant with a mini fountain in the middle. So romantic. This is one of my favorite restaurants in Milan; great atmosphere (as described above), good food, good price, and friendly staff. Recommended dishes: -Spaghetti with tomato sauce. Sounds plain... but absolutely divine, and hands down the BEST I've ever had. Maybe it's because I haven't tried a lot in Italy... but no matter. Trattoria Toscana does it great. -Pesto lasagna. Not your average lasagna but the pesto is really good! The seafood spaghetti was not the best I've had, but it was solid. I also got the sea bass to share with my friend, and it was pretty bland and passable. They do good pasta, but everything else is mediocre. And everything is priced extremely reasonably! Average plate of pasta is under 10 euros. The staff here are really nice and accommodating. My friend was indecisive about two dishes, and the waitress just let him have one for free, "so we could all try it, *wink." So nice of her! Highly recommend this place for a group dinner (there is a lot of seating), or a romantic date!

A basket of breads and a bowl of olives were served to us by our waiter, Fabio. I asked his recommendation for a nice red wine that was smooth. He chose a delicious wine, perfect for the main dish beef I planned to order. My husband ordered a wonderful fizzy water that we hope we can find at home. I am celiac, so no bread for me. However, my husband said the pillowy focaccia was his favorite out of the selections in the basket. Let me tell you about the olives: they were the best green olives I have ever had, popping with garlic flavor, and their texture was perfect. They tasted home-made to me! We started the meal with a selection of cheeses which came with a pot of honey and a pot of a caramelized red onion-reduced in red wine and sweetened with a little sugar. The onion condiment was divine. It was best when topped on the truffle cheese. Main courses arrived later. My steak fillet was the softest beef I have ever eaten. In fact, it was truly the best steak I have ever eaten. Cooked to perfection! My husband ordered the sea bass and grilled veggies. We split the veggies. For dessert my husband selected a flan-like dessert that was smooth and silky while I chose a green apple sorbet that had a French Norman brandy (Calvados) on top. This was a sensational pop of flavors. Ending the meal with coffee, we promised ourselves to return on our next trip to Milano. Thank Fabio for excellent service and for making our last dinner in Milan a meal to remember!
