Faced with the insidious march of Beefeater conversions and gastro-pubs, fifty intrepid villagers bought The Jolly some 20 years ago with the simple objective of keeping it as a local. At the time, it made the national press, slightly derisively, but, with time, it's proved to be a huge success. It's still a free-house, the restaurant is still an add-on to the main bar and, good or bad, it's still frequented by a large number of villagers. You might be surprised by the number of brass medallions hanging by the log fireplaces, the number of strange old bottles surrounding the bar, and the photos of locals from previous generations supping ale on the adjoining village green but, equally, you might be relieved to find that a fast disappearing example of a genuine British pub still survives.

The restaurant had only just opened but we waited ages to even be acknowledged and didn't receive a friendly welcome. The lady who served tried to sit us near one of the doors. There was a cold breeze so we said we don't want to sit near the doors and she made a comment that they aren't meant to be used as an entrance anyway. We ordered food and my drink was definitely not what I ordered. I ordered a mocha and what arrived definitely had no chocolate in and tasted rather horrid. When our food came over, the lady said 'well what do you want instead?' with an attitude and I said the drink I ordered, and she said 'well, that's just how it came from the machine' and walked off. So I paid £4.25 for a different drink to the one I ordered (which I couldn't drink as it tasted horrible). I felt totally ripped off, with no drink. I found the server to be rude and with a bad attitude. We came for a special day out and this meal was part of it, and the way we were treated made me feel really annoyed and upset. The food was okay, I've had better in other Pizza Express restaurants (and much better service!). Wouldn't recommend or return to the Camberley branch.

Secondly, there was a limited selection of dishes my vegetarian friends could eat. None of the pasta dishes were marked with a v, despite some only having vegetables in them. Yes, obviously, they could have a salad or a pizza, but you would think at least one pasta on the menu would be suitable for our veggie friends. Strange. Anyway, my three health conscious friends got salads, whilst I got the new recipe 4 cheese pizza with chicken on top. We shared dough balls which were, of course, warm, doughy and served with that addictive and moreish garlic butter which we all love so much. My pizza was perfectly cooked, with properly melted cheese and nice chicken strips on the top. No complaints at all. My friend's mushroom salads seemed to hit the spot, as did the chicken salad. Despite asking for every possible sauce variation going (no sauce, with sauce, sauce on side), the staff managed to get it right. We each spent about £10, which is not too bad for a nice meal in familiar surroundings. However, we did discuss that actually, Ask have a far greater selection (including meat, fish and calzone options), and now that Pizza Express has increased its price, there doesn't seem much point in not going to Ask instead! They've even started issuing 50% off and 2 for 1 voucher with as much frequency as Pizza Express. I fear this will be the beginning of the end of my love affair with the Express.

A triple whammy, really. We found a number of options but, really needing to book somewhere due to having to get the last bus / train back to Haddenham, we decided on Branca. After a quick drink at the Jericho Tavern down the road, we walked into Branca and were seated immediately; very efficient. Menus were distributed, wine and water ordered, and then our order taken. Service was friendly, if a bit stilted when it came to drink delivery. A great feature here is that the starters can be ordered in tapa or 'full starter' and the mains can also be ordered in different sizes. I had the red pepper, mozzarella and pesto as a tapa - it was an excellent size to start, though lacked in any notable flavours. Despite eating my body weight in it on holiday I couldn't resist a pizza - pepperoni, fotina cheese, chilli and spinach. It was spicy but well balanced, and very well turned out for a restaurant pizza. Pasta and risotto around the table looked equally tasty. It's a lovely location and we enjoyed the laid back atmosphere throughout the evening. We didn't feel rushed and could really indulge in our meals. Branca was a good first step in exploring Oxford but I'm looking forward to returning and trying somewhere new.
