I have seen the PBT presentation of The Nutcracker several times, but this may have been the last for me. I enjoy the Pittsburgh references to the story and in the scenery but, really, the hockey-stick-carrying penguin, the rats waving "terrible towels" were a bit strange. As were the "local celebrities" who were given non-speaking, non-dancing (thankfully!) roles as party guests-- why?? What could be next? Pittsburgh Dance Moms in minor roles? Apparently I prefer a more traditional version of The Nutcracker. I missed some of the costumes and dances from the original Balanchine production. I know that some will say that it's predictable and static to do this the same way every year, but when I think of this ballet, it is what I want to see. That being said, the dancers were wonderfully talented and executed their movements perfectly. We are fortunate to have their talent in Pittsburgh! read more

I know enough about ballet to know that it is significantly more difficult than it looks. These dancers have full body control and it is impressive to watch. I will say it is a nice outing and it feels fancy and it pulls you in. They also send a lot of flyers in the mail and you can find reasonably priced shows. A magical and relaxing escape from the real world! Thank you to Yelp and PBT for allowing me the opportunity to take my family out to the ballet for, The Nutcracker. The Benedum is a gorgeous, back in time (classic), and family friendly venue. To pass the time before the show and at intermission, there were snack and drink areas, a duo of singers belting out holiday tunes, and plenty of helpful staff on hand directing attendees to rest rooms, quiet areas etc. There's so much to look at in the interior, that I look forward to going back and again to admire all the nooks and crannies. It was enjoyable and refreshing to see zero electronics up and out during the entirety of the performance. The performers were amazing, and loved seeing how each of them put their own little spin on each of the characters. We laughed, had goosebumps from the music, and had a wonderful time. Overall we had a wonderful time, but I'd be remiss in saying I was a bit disappointed there is no longer live music. Once we all got acclimated to the acoustics it was quite enjoyable. Finally, for those with food allergies, there's quite a few snacks being brought back into seats - candies, nuts etc. Our kids switched seats to avoid sitting next to someone that was eating. I had the opportunity to see the Nutcracker on Sunday for the first time in probably 20 years. It did not disappoint. The best part was taking my 3 year old daughter. I could not believe it, but the show kept her attention the entire time. Her favorite part was seeing one of the ballerinas before the show and during intermission. There were also old point shoes out so she could touch and feel them. The dancers were fantastic. I would really love to check out another PBT production in the near future. Well we have been to the Benedum a few times now. This past time we came down for the Nutcracker with Yelp! We haven't been to the Nutcracker since my wife and I were both little kids ourselves. We got there early and got in with no issues. The performance they put on was flawless and we even enjoyed laughing at some of the modern tweaks they added to it with the dancing and moves. We were a little disappointed that the music was just over the speakers and not from a live orchestra but all the same we enjoyed it very much. My kids 9 and 10 sat through the whole performance and were hooked on every bit of it. While I did catch the my daughter falling asleep a just few times my son was nearly on the edge of his seat hooked on every move and step of the performance. This may just become a yearly tradition to go to now and be part of our holiday tradition for our family! read more

The Nutcracker performance at the Benedum Center, is a must see! Not only is the theater stunningly beautiful (especially during the holiday) but the performance itself is such a great experience! We decided to go to the Sunday afternoon show, and I'm glad we did. Parking downtown is free (on street) on Sunday's - and the crowd was a bit younger which was nice because we took my boyfriend's children to the show (thanks Yelp) Evenings tend to be a bit more dressy, and for adults. I was surprised at the amount of children at the show we attended - and I was blown away at their patience! That really should tell how great the show is after all. read more

Over the years, I have been to many shows performed by the Pittsburgh Ballet Theatre. I have never been to a show I did not enjoy. The Nutcracker is my absolute favorite. My husband and I have made it a tradition to go every year. They slightly change the performance each year, which keeps it fun. Pittsburgh Ballet Theater does a great job with costumes and staging. They also have a lot of really talented dancers. Recently, we attended the Great Gatsby and it was wonderful. As for the Benedum where they usually perform, very beautiful. Fantastic ballet school. We've had one of our kids in here for the past five years, and all I can say is that it is extremely well organized, child-centered, and friendly. We've always been impressed with our child's interest in ballet, learned discipline, and artistic development through Mrs. Kayla Lewis' direction. It has been a pleasure to spend mornings here, promoting our children's creativity and artistry. Attended the Christmas "Nutcracker". What's Hot - Wonderful performance! The company are very skilled and entertaining. I'm not a ballet expert, but their technique looked amazing. - Diversity. I'm wonderfully surprised there are Asian and African-American ballet dancers in the company. It's different from the ballet companies I saw when I was a child. I appreciate that the company is making progress and showing a cast that reflects modern society. - Children in the performance. I enjoyed the ballet's incorporation of children dancers and performers. What a nice touch of adding the floss dance with the children in the Nutcracker! Very amusing. My friends and I enjoyed and laughed at that small incorporation. - Use of Yelp. I appreciate companies that work collaboratively with Yelp to get the locals involved. I have not seen the Nutcracker ballet since I was a child, so it was nice to receive the Yelp invitation of free Nutcracker ballet tickets. I would not have seen the ballet otherwise. Additionally, it exposed me to another cultural aspect of Pittsburgh. Thank you to the company and the dancers! What's Not - Paid parking. Given the location of the Benedum Theatre, there was no free parking on a Saturday in the area. It makes it more difficult when looking at prices, but there you have it. The whimsical costumes, the skilled dancers, and the incredible dance by the ballerinas was just very well done and classic. This show is truly a Joy to see at Christmastime. PBT is amazing. I really can't say enough about their overall contributions to the community. My son participates in a neighborhood program that is not affiliated with PBT. Pittsburgh Ballet Theatre's community outreach program visited his class of 18month-almost 3 years olds last school year and he became smitten with them. His first show to attend was Alice in Wonderland. I never expected him to become fascinated the way in which he was by the music and dance at such a young age. We pick our seats so we are next to the isle and closest to the door. When he needs a potty break we quietly sneak downstairs to use the potty and can watch the rest of the act on the television provided. And sometimes we meet other parents of Tots in that area, who also had to run to the restroom and whose Tots are now dancing along to the performance too. Since our first show we have taken him to several performances at the Benedum Center. Most recently the Nutcracker Ballet for his 3rd Birthday. He adores the experience. During this last performance he was able to meet the Sugar Plum Fairy. Oh what a treat. He loved the show. The music and dancing captives his very short attention span longer than I would ever think possible. He is mesmerized. I will add that on a grown ups only evening in October, we might have left the kids at home to see Giselle with the live Orchestra. I mention this performance because when performances arose with an orchestra, I do highly suggest attending. The bitter sweet story was only heightened with the bitter sweet performance by the lead dancers retirement. This show was moving in ways I can't begin to explain and only the dancers at PBT can tell this story by the movements of their body. Which is a talent that is immeasurable. read more

These people are so talented! I enjoy seeing their interpretations of popular stories with beautiful forms and music. I'm really starting to enjoy watching ballets because of this group. I've enjoyed some of the most recent ballet productions given by the Ballet theater so I was thrilled with an opportunity to "go behind the scenes" and take part in 2017 1st official Yelp event-YELP Barre fitness class at the Pittsburgh ballet theater. After registering we were shown a locker room for both storage and changing your clothes. Form fitting attire is recommended. While en route to the studio we would work out in I saw a Pilates room complete with reformers which are used to enhance core strength. We were told to pick a place at the barre, then we could practice in socks or ballet slippers if you happen to own a pair. Kristie introduced us to the 1 hour class and proceeded to teach 1/2 hour of the lesson. The first part dealt with basic strength and core conditioning including those dreaded push-ups. Being able to use the bar made them a lot easier than doing them on the floor. The second instructor came in and we were taught the positions of ballet for both feet and arms. Then she taught us some simple ballet moves such as plies.I learned the essentials of good posture in performing what they would term as simple moves. Believe me it can get confusing since there's a lot to take in but it was all worth it in the end. We then advanced to simple jumps across the room and had fun doing it while divided into two groups. At the end we came to the center of the room and put together all we had learned. After class we were taken into the hallway where they served light refreshments as well as wine and bottled water. We were also given 10% off coupon if we wanted to enroll in some classes. Coupon is valid until Feb. 1. I got to inquire about the dancers who do pointe in the theatrical productions. I learned that those are professional troupes and the slippers I always see in the lobby are donated by the some of the dancers for sale. The Pittsburgh Ballet theater is located on the edge of the Strip in Polish Hill. They have their own parking lot or you can use the one across the street. Thanks again to Rachel for making this class so worthwhile. The Ballet theater's next production is in Feb. and I heard it is very good. Tickets are still available to see "Alice in Wonderland" at the Benedum Center if you wish to see ballet at its best. read more

I also was able to bring three guests with me which was super cool right before the holidays. The Benedum was were the ballet was held and wow were we just blown away by how beautiful the building was. It was nicely decorated for the holiday as well. The show itself was spectacular! The costumes and talent were stellar. We were very entertained the entire time. It was nice that they did break for a short intermission. We were able to get up, stretch our legs, and grab a cocktail from the bar before returning to enjoy the rest of the show. The talent that was there was simply amazing. I loved that they included children in the show. It truly gave that special holiday feeling! First time experiencing the Nutcracker and it did not disappoint. All of the dancers were extraordinary and added in a little extra comedy to heighten the experience. The amount of talent on stage was absolutely amazing. The ballerinas looked like they floated across the stage. My wife and I went to the Benedum to see Giselle that was performed by the Pittsburgh Ballet Theatre. This is the third show that we have seen from the Pittsburgh Ballet and it was a great performance. We were seated close to the stage this time and you can really see their talent in full display that close. Giselle is a ballet about a girl named Giselle, who dies of a broken heart after discovering her lover is actually a Count and supposed to be wed to another woman. The count first disguised himself as a peasant and he falls in love with Giselle. Then the Huntsman ( who is in love with Giselle too) sees there is something not right with Albrecht disguised as a peasant. He eventually exposes the Count of his lie and Giselle who has a faint heart cannot take the pain of the real truth about the Count her lover. This was all in Act I. I enjoyed Act I better than Act II. Act II was good but it was more of a battle with the afterlife involving the huntsman, and Giselle trying to save Albrecht from a evil queen. Overall I really enjoyed the show. The girl who plays Giselle was very talented. I don't know specifics on ballet theatre but I was really impressed by her dancing. Her spinning and balancing on one foot for a long time was amazing. The other main performances were just as good. We've seen some of the same people in Peter Pan and the Nut Cracker and their talent it is very impressive. The orchestra was great too. I still have a couple of their songs pleasantly stuck in my head. Guys if you have never taken your girl to the theatre try out the Pittsburgh ballet. Your girl will love it and you will learn to enjoy it too. It's a good date and it's better than the usual going to the movies or going to a sporting event. You won't be disappointed! read more

Seeing the Nutcracker at the Benedum Center is one of my favorite holiday traditions. Thanks to Yelp we were able to bring a few more family members this year! The doors to the show open about a 1/2 prior to start time. We selected the 4:30 in order to have lunch and see the tree at PPG. Parking downtown can be tricky, especially during holiday time. We parked in a garage near Harris Grill for about $6 for the entire afternoon. Be careful parking in garage closer to the Benedum Center as they can have rates as high as $20. The process through Yelp was super easy. We picked up our tickets at the box office without issue. If you arrive before doors open you can still go inside to see through merchandise, grab a snack or drink or pick up your program to look through. Once the doors open we were excited to find we were seated in the downstairs area. This is the first time we sat in this section. Honestly, I don't think there's a bad seat in the entire place! The show was fantastic as always. I think this showing had more humor in it compared to past years! It was a welcome surprise and kept us on our toes the entire performance. On to the show, what a talented group of performers all I can say is fantastic. Wow what a wonderful experience. The seats were perfect. Was greeted by a cheerful usher and shared her knowledge of the Theatre. Performance was just amazing. Costumes were beautiful. The whole night was exciting and capturing. I received a pair of free tickets through Yelp to see The Nutcracker last Fri. evening. I was very excited to see this show, since I'd wanted to see it last last year, but couldn't work it out with my (now ex-) boyfriend's schedule. I'm used to second tier seating at the Benedum, but I was in for a real treat, since the tickets turned out to be for orchestra level (score!). What a great surprise for my birthday, which happened to be that day! I really enjoyed PBT's performance of The Nutcracker! Between the dancing, the choreography, and the costumes and scenery, I thought the show was excellent. I've never seen a live performance of The Nutcracker before, and the last time I saw the movie was in elementary school music class. Even though it'd been this long, I was able to follow the plot with very few problems. I enjoyed the Pittsburgh-specific references in PBT's version of the show, which included a setting at a mansion in Shadyside and a Heinz carriage. I thought both acts were very good, and each had advantages. The first act was easier to follow in terms of the plot, but I enjoyed the dancing better in the second act, which featured more of the principals and soloists. Although the stage could get a bit crowded during certain scenes, the scenes were ones where it was either appropriate in light of the plot (e.g., the party scene in the first act) or where it was difficult to avoid (the final scene of the dream sequence). In general, I found the visual impact of the show very pleasing--if you prefer more visually-oriented shows, as my friend who accompanied me does, this show would definitely be your cup of tea. Overall, I found PBT's performance of The Nutcracker to be engaging and enjoyable, and I'd definitely pay to see it again. While this was the first live ballet performance I've seen, I thought that the dancing, costumes, scenery, and choreography very good to excellent. I'm glad that this show is a Christmas tradition in Pittsburgh--it's definitely one that I plan on taking advantage of regularly in the future! read more

Went to see The Great Gatsby for my first PBT experience. Overall, I was really impressed by the experience. The Great Gatsby story and setting was a perfect match for the historic Benedum Center venue. I felt like I was traveling back in time! Honestly, I'm surprised Gatsby hasn't been adapted for ballet before, as the dramatic story is perfect for dance. PBT's version was a very lavish production, with a LOT of detailed sets, props, costumes, and special effects. I feel like the production was almost too over the top and sort of detracted from the dancers and choreography at times. In particular, many of the costumes were bulky and made it hard to see and appreciate the dancer's movements. I didn't know what to expect from a smaller professional ballet company, but was impressed with the skill of the principals and soloists. The female soloists in particular were very strong and really carried the show. In contrast, I was disappointed in the corps de ballet. They always seemed to be a little uncoordinated and off with timing. The choreography was very traditional, expect for a few brief sequences of contemporary style. These parts were the highlight of the show for me and I think the dancers were the best dancing in a more modern style. I am excited to return to PBT for a contemporary show. read more

Went to see Giselle at the Benedum for my first Ballet other than the Nutcracker. My husband and I were utterly blown away. The ballet was breathtaking. The talent of the dancers was amazing. The orchestra also amazing. I was worried I would not be able to follow the story but it was not a problem at all. I read the synopsis in the booklet beforehand and the music and movement of the dancers very clearly told the story. My husband who was reluctant to go also loved it! I had a lovely evening seeing the Great Gatsby here! The Great Gatsby is one of my favorite books, and I love watching ballet, but I was nevertheless a little skeptical of how well these two would go together. Rest assured, the show was wonderful! I love how it incorporated iconic moments from the book I was a little surprised by the lack of synchrony in the dancers during group choreography - it seemed like a dancer or two was almost always a beat ahead or behind. This year's Nutcracker show was fantastic! The choreography was outstanding, the dancers were phenomenal, and my family and I were entertained for the entire show! We especially loved the little comedic parts every once in awhile! And I cannot forget the children, oh my they were so cute and did such an amazing job!
