If you're ever in Cromarty you must go and visit the pirates graveyard.. It's not signposted but if you ask any local they will show you the way. It's up a slight hill you can walk to it easily, if you drive you need to just pull in at the side of the road to park.
The graves date from the 1600's and each gravestone is uniquely decorated with boats, skull and crossbones, egg timers and bells.. Which are all related to the sea and as many believe pirates. There is also a crypt in the middle, I get a bit freaked out by this, but have peaked in from the doorway..
There is a beautiful erieness about the place, the way the light casts shadows through the trees can lead to some amazing photographs. read more
