The Left Bank Brasserie - The Left Bank Brasserie, Formby

Since the decline of lunch behemoth The Italian Kitchen, Left Bank has become the latest restaurant…read moreto earn the title 'Formby's number 1 lunchtime venue'. This is not generally due to the quality food it offers and more to the price, with a party of four being able to dine for roughly ten pounds (there's not too much wrong with what they serve, it's what you'd expect for less than three quid). Whilst I've never been that impressed with the food on offer at lunchtime, I have been fortunate enough to attend Left Bank of an evening and sample its finer cuisine on the menu. On both occasions, I have visited the restaurant for football team end-of-season dos and have found that they can easily accommodate big groups in the upstairs room, which offers a good space as well as separation from the quieter diners downstairs. The food was delicious and well presented (the steak I had was unrecognisable from the meat in the steak sandwich available on the lunchtime menu) but one point I would make is that the portions were quite small, suggesting that they rely on you ordering the full three courses in order to have your appetite fully satisfied, which I was not (who wants all that food soaking up the alcohol you're consuming?) The taste more than made up for the size though and on both occasions, the large group of rowdy lads (myself included) left feeling very happy (if a little drunk), certain to return again.

Necessity, we are always told, is the mother of invention and the credit crunch (or 'moneygeddon'…read moreas Charlie Brooker rebranded the whole thing) has birthed the dynamo-success of this eatery. That this place is absolutely packed of a lunchtime owes little to the quality of the food - which is somewhere between airport canteen and city-centre branch of Bella Italia standard - but rather to the £2.50 lunchtime offer. The menu includes options ranging from steak sandwich and chips (which is literally only steak in a half baguette; no salad, no sauce) to pesto pasta and chicken caesar salads. Lunch is well worth it, particularly as you would struggle to get a pre-packed sandwich or pasta-salad from nearby Waitrose for any less, but also because the surroundings are cool and clean, the staff are genial and the management are really accommodating - no problem squeezing you in, even if you have to wait a few minutes. Drinks are pretty expensive with a soft drink (poured from a multipack bottle - I've seen them do it) costing almost as much as the meal itself. I can't say anything of the evening menu, as I've never visited here except of a lunchtime, but I have heard the quality is a definite improvement on the workaday midday grub.

The Hanover Street Social came recommended by a friend of a friend, so I put in for a booking on the Sunday of the last bank holiday. They serve breakfast before noon on Sundays, so my reservation was for 12.30, hoping to miss the Sunday roast crush. Oddly, the place was empty when I arrived, though the place filled up quickly as my visit went along. I ordered a Mersey Sunset drink that came out in a comically large glass with umbrella. My argument was that I was never going to find this elsewhere outside of Merseyside. I ordered the beef Sunday roast, which came with the most gloriously crispy potatoes and parsnips.I took one star off because the beef was chewier and tougher than I'd expect. For pudding, they had a gluten-free cheesecake not on the menu that I'm glad I asked about. The roast and dessert came out looking amazing. For two courses at £17.95, I had a nicer experience than I did at a fancy place in Glasgow and for less than a single main. Wait staff at the Social were fantastic: Northern hospitality for you! My photos are not attaching reliably to my review. If you can't see them, check them out at the top of the restaurant's page on the Yelp app.

Sometimes this French style place is somewhere you want to shout about, other times it's somewhere you want to shout AT. What keeps me coming back is the fact that when it's good, it's really good. The atmosphere is great, very ambient, and the menu always looks very classy but doesn't always live up to its description. The one quality that's never varied however is that of the moules marinier, mussels which are surely to die for. Or at least, make a special journey for. Sometimes accompaniments can be a little undercooked, and depending on your mood the jovial, jokey and bantering staff can either be the perfect tonic or your worst enemy. It's not the most efficient of service but most of the times I've stopped by I've felt well looked after. Despite its troubled past (problems with chefs scarpering with a great deal of moolah), Auberge does come up trumps when it wants to. A frequently changing menu keeps things really fresh, and the staff do have a lot of advice to offer about the menu. While the wine list can be a little pricey you can often get special offers if you look in the right places, so you might be able to get your money's worth. All in all a bit of a Gemini of a restaurant, but can be worth the risk...

After hearing good things about this place for gluten free, I called in and decided to order from their lunch menu. It was around £11 for 2 courses. For my starter, I ordered the Eggs Florentine which is a poached egg on gluten free bread with hollandaise sauce, and sadly it was a giant, bland mess. I didn't really like the sauce, there was too much of it and it got messy really quickly, the dish as a whole was poor, unseasoned and the bread was burnt. The staff didn't seem friendly, service overall seemed slow, they had a sense of arrogance and shock when I sent my food back as well. One thing that shocked me was that the old fashioned decor Cote had only one member of staff working, with the other looking like he was in 'training', running around like a headless chicken with my food before someone else brought it, based on what was to come I'd have wished he would have run off with my food. For my main, I ordered the seabass and again experienced similar problems, the fish its-self was too oily and watery to the point I ended up leaving it, the only thing of decent quality was the chive potatoes which for me isn't right. Sadly, due to issues with the overall feel inside Cote, food quality and service I feel Cote deserves a one-star rating with the main positive being the use of 'Gluten Free' flags in the food to minimise the risk of cross-contamination etc.

For me (with hearing issues) there is not enough soft furnishings to soak up some of the sound, so in the end I removed my hearing aids. There wasn't any loud misic it was just general restaurant chatter. Before I booked I checked out the menu, and is very much in the style of Bistrot Pierre. Bistrot Pierre was founded in 1994, and the COTE series of restaurants was founded in 2007. However, the latter have more sites. They automatically add 12.5% to the bill. I'm happy to pay this if confirmed by the staff that they actually do get the money. Nevertheless, I'd prefer to decide upon my contribution. Before I start about the choices, it was an interesting observation subsequently checking the bill to see that my 11 yo chose the most expensive items that appeared on the bill. Also, is it waiter for all genders these days? Has this hit the languages that have masculine and feminine for objects, and people? I'm going to distinguish between the two by Male Waiter (MW) and Female Waiter (FW). Starters: 2 x Calamari (£6.50 ea) - £13.00 2 x Crab Mayonnaise (£7.75 ea) - £15.00 1 x Prawn - £15.00 Mains: 3 x 7oz Fillet Steaks (£19.95 ea) - £59.85 (2 with garlic butter at £1.25 each - £2.50) 1 x half chicken, garlic butter (extra) £11.50 + £1.25 - £12.75 1 x Steak Frites - £11.50 Sweets: 1 x Creme Brulee - £5.95 1 x Tart Aux Citron - £5.75 1 x Iced Berries - £4.95 1 x Praline Crepe - £6.25 Drinks 3 x Coca Cola - (£2.60 ea) - £7.80 4 x Bottles of Kronenburg (£3.80) - £15.20 1 Cranberry Juice - £2.30 3 x 125ml Lagarde Blanc (£4.25 ez) - £14.25 (cheaper to have had the bottle, will she never learn?) 2 x 125ml Lagarde Rouge (£4.75) - £9.50 1 x Cafe American - £2.30 Service Charge - £24.58 TOTAL - £221.18 Now for the loss of the star: Fillet steaks ordered as follows: Me - Blue Daughter - Rare Son - Medium Unfortunately, it was discovered a bit too late as that garlic butter had been applied and I didn't want garlic butter. We got: Me - Medium Daughter - Blue Son - Rare They were delivered from the kitchen by two MWs. The FW offered me a free drink (I declined), as they couldn't un-cook my steak. We all enjoyed the steaks, but they are supposed to be locally reared and aged 30 days. I have had better aged steaks that don't ooze blood..... However, they were tender. There was also errors on a nearby table: First they brought out one plate of Steak Frites, when two was order, and they thought the old ladies wanted to share.... Not so.... They were told the additional one would take 7 minutes. Quite rightly they asked for the one available to be taken back and both brought to the table at the same time. When their bill arrived, it had 3 steak frites, instead of 2..... I am not quite sure why these mistakes happen: our steaks, and the ladies' steak frites.... Would I return to Cote Brasserie - YES.

In fact, though the décor and layout inside is similar, its actually not a mere bar but a fine French brasserie. Its open as early as 8am for breakfast and throughout the day for lunch, dinner, coffee or drinks. Its pretty pricey but the food is of very high quality, making it worth the money if you fancy treating yourself. There's also often an offer on, but this may require you to print out a voucher so its worth checking the website before you go. The best value is probably the prix fixe menu, which is 1, 2 or 3 courses starting from around £7 at lunchtime and £12.50 for dinner. Personally though, if you are going to Chez Gerard you're better off completely splashing out, and going for the demi poulet from the a la carte menu, half a grilled corn-fed chicken with herbs (they don't spoilt it), pommes frites (chips innit) and a gorgeous garlic butter sauce (wehey!).
