On the second day, he was paired to spar with a 14‑year‑old girl who repeatedly used elbows to his head. He chose not to match her force because he was trying to be respectful. We contacted the coach afterward and were under the impression the situation would be addressed. On the third day, a 9‑year‑old was sparring in the adult class. My son (5'8", 174 lbs, and on only his third day) tried to guide the younger child by reminding him to keep his hands up. At some point, the coach felt my son made contact too hard. An adult student named Greg--over 6 feet tall and more than 300 lbs--then asked to spar with my son; my son being new and being instructed to spar with everyone accepts to spar. He struck my son hard multiple times and got a clean hit to the face. When my son asked him to tone it down, Greg responded that my son should have done the same with the younger child and if he wanted him to tone it down my son should do the same with the 9 year old. The coach later stated that he had been watching the interactions but did not step in. He defended Greg's behavior while also saying it "wasn't okay," and his only proposed solution was to talk to Greg. He also questioned why my son returned after feeling uncomfortable on day two. The coach repeatedly emphasized that this is a "fighting gym," yet allowed a clear size and experience imbalance to escalate without intervention. This environment does not appear to prioritize safety, supervision, or appropriate pairing--especially for beginners or younger participants. The coach acknowledged that if Greg had gone "really hard," my son would not have been standing, which raises further concerns about oversight and risk management. If you are looking for a structured, safe, and positive learning environment focused on skill development, discipline, and proper supervision--especially at $200 per month per person--this may not be the right fit. My son attended to learn self‑defense and gain confidence, not to be placed in unsafe or poorly supervised sparring situations.

Alvin took the time to listen to my goals and created a fun and new workout plan for me. I have learned to love Muay Thai and feel confident each day with the ability to protect myself. It has been a great addition to sustaining cardiovascular endurance. He also showed me how to incorporate kettlebells into strength training exercises. It was a steep learning curve, but with consistency and Alvin's knowledge, I'm feeling stronger every day. Alvin doesn't just preach health and fitness, he helps you achieve it. He allows you to appreciate your strengths and weaknesses and use that towards lifelong success. I would highly recommend an initial consultation, which is complimentary, to discuss your goals! I am confident Alvin can help you reach them.

That isn't all he can do so if you want something else he can help you with that as well. I had no prior martial arts and I was honestly intimidated to go to a gym. He has made the experience really welcoming. One of the things I noticed right away is that he has really good attention to detail. He is also incredibly good at pacing your progress. He pushes me a little bit more every single time. He is never running late and is always there ready to go. My cardio, strength, flexibility, and mental fortitude has gone through the roof. I hit PRs with him almost every session so far. He has helped me a lot with breathing and staying relaxed. Those two things have made my life better in many ways already. If you are considering it at all just call him. Trust me on this one

Coaches take the time to correct details and explain the "why" behind every move, making it great for both beginners and experienced fighters. The coaching staff is diverse, with specialists in Muay Thai, BJJ, wrestling, and MMA. Each coach brings a different background, so you get a full spectrum of knowledge in striking, grappling, and conditioning. Morning and afternoon classes fit any schedule, with a pro class in the afternoons and sparring on Wednesday evenings and Saturday mornings. The technical instruction is outstanding, whether you're brand new to jiu jitsu or preparing for any level of competition. Safety is always the top priority, but the training is still tough and pushes you to improve every day. What really sets this gym apart is the culture. It truly feels like a family. Coach Dustin invests in the people who invest in their training. He traveled with me to competitions, gave his time outside of normal class hours, and was always willing to help me improve. That level of dedication is hard to find. One thing I always appreciated was that class didn't just end because the clock hit a certain time. If people were still getting rounds in, Coach Dustin would stay until everyone finished unless he genuinely had somewhere to be. It showed how much he cared about giving his students every opportunity to train. I left Las Vegas because of a move, and leaving this academy was the hardest part. I made lifelong friends here and became a much better grappler because of Coach Dustin and everyone at Kuleana/Cobrinha GV. If you're looking for a place that offers world-class instruction, a welcoming environment, and coaches who genuinely care about their students, this is the place.
