This is my second update of my review of Coatesville, Indiana's Bousley Funeral Home. It's a smalltown funeral home on the border of Hendricks and Putnam counties. It's the funeral home where my mother was served, my father was served, and my brother was cremated during the COVID-19 pandemic.
I first reviewed Bousley following the death of my younger brother in 2020. His was a COVID-influenced cremation service with no public ceremony. It went perfectly fine, however, it certainly didn't give anything close to the full funeral home experience.
Bousley is a locally owned, family-owned funeral home. The Bousley family bought it from another local family and I believe they hadn't been in business long when my brother passed away. Bousley offers funeral services, cremation, memorial markers, and headstones.
Coatesville is a relatively small town located in Putnam County. It's the home to Heritage Lake (a lakeside residential community) where my parents lived.
Bousley offers a wide variety of casket options for those seeking burial - from incredibly economical to ultra-premium. They offer a variety of options with cremation, as well. While I'm far from an expert with funerals, though I am a minister and have served at more than a few, their prices are consistent with a small town. At the time of my most recent experience, I considered them lower. That's probably not accurate. I've learned I could have had a much less expensive experience here in Indy. In Indy, however, it also could have been MUCH higher.
They offer the usual service options - different services, different settings, obituary assistance, etc. They do have obituaries on their website, though it's worth noting the website is in significant need of updating (for example, the Bousley children have grown up quite a bit and Mr. Bousley is still pictured despite having passed away in 2023 - his wife carries on as the owner.
My father returned to Bousley when my mother passed away in mid-2021. This was a full-service funeral with burial in nearby Clear Creek Cemetery. I did discover that the funeral home does have some accessibility quirks (there's a parlor area I could not access and the ramp into the main area is a bit steep, though I made it work). That said, staff are very friendly and helpful. After this visit, I contemplated upping the rating. However, I'll admit the access issues bugged me and I kept it at 4.
I learned from an uncle that my father really had to be persistent to get my mother's tombstone engraved. It took forever.
As many of you know, last year I returned to Bousley when my father passed away. As the last family member, this experience was largely navigated by me and it gave me a stronger impression of Bousley. They picked up my father from the family home when he passed (he'd been in hospice). They graciously waited to do so until I could arrive from Indy. My home was was difficult to navigate with their cart, however, they did do so respectfully while explaining the process. We made arrangements to meet the next day to discuss the services. We went through this process and all was handled well. Funerals are certainly expensive. While a variety of option were explored, there wasn't much attempt to upsell. My father wanted simple - we stayed as simple and respectful as we could.
I opted for a one day service with visitation before the service. I used a friend who's a minister. I picked a wood casket that was quite nice and we went through service options. They even assisted in cashing in life insurance to help pay for the cost. I'd found a small policy and they continued working on it. Following the service, I received a lovely bag with death certificates, a copy of the DVD we made, leftover memorial bulletins, and other small items.
The accessibility issues are still present, of course. One employee, in particular, seemed assigned to make sure I was able to get what I needed and assist with accessibility. It was really quite nice.
The real hitch here, and the reason I'm updating, is here we are eighteen months later and my parents' tombstone has yet to be updated with my father's date of death.
Quite honestly, this is inexcusable. It's incredibly disrespectful to the deceased and their family. I knew that it could be a bit, but there's nothing that justifies 18 months. I'm still working this out. Assuming this works out, I'll maintain a three-star review. If I ultimately have to explore other option, I'll update yet again.
This will be my last experience with Bousley. My entire family has passed in the last five years. I live in Indy, and I have zero intent to be buried or cremated in Putnam County. There's still lots of good here, but again - it's in the details and the details are amiss here.
