NF Chance Funeral Home and Cremation Service

My mother had left specific instructions for a direct cremation at NF Chance along with a newspaper article with pricing. It was old and we did not know what to expect on pricing which was ok, we just wanted to follow her wishes. Evidently she had spoken to someone at NF Chance a few years ago and really liked them. When we met with Charles at the location, he confirmed that the price was still good but that there would be an extra charge for excessive weight. We did not know the exact weight of my mother whom was still in the hospital but I told him I would email it to him when I went back to visit. I gave him an approximate weight (which was actually more than what she weighed). The next day I emailed him the exact weight per the doctor who was monitoring her weight daily via the scale built into the bed. When she passed away a few days later we met with Charles again to pay. There was an extra charge for removal of her pace maker and false Knee and then a hundred dollar charge for the extra weight. All this was fine. We just wanted to get things tied up as there was much still to do with her belongings. Several days later when I picked up the death certificate; Charles tells me that they charged him more for the weight than he thought. I said that I had given him the exact weight (I still have the email) several days before she passed away and that we had already paid in full and had a receipt for such. I asked if they had raised the prices above what he was told and he said no. I would assume when I gave him the weight and before he gave us the total to be paid, that he would have confirmed the price he was going to be charged by the crematorium. Remember we have already paid him an extra 100.00 for excess weight supposedly based on the weight I gave him which was accurate. He said he would "settle" for another 100.00 due by the time we picked up the remains. I had to get back to my home several hundred miles away. I had to have my sister pay him when she picked up the remains. He talked like we had to pay to pick them up. We were both just too upset and tired to deal with him in a legal capacity. We do feel like he held the remains hostage for the extra hundred dollars though. We sat in a formal setting with an itemized list of charges and paid him in full. Then as the body is still at the crematorium, he wants more money. I believe this would violate some sort of ethics rules for the profession or licensing board.

After they took custody of him, they failed to properly preserve him. He was left unrefrigerated for days, and his body visibly decomposed. The smell will never leave my memory. Under Indiana law (IC § 23-14-31-37), if immediate cremation is not possible, funeral homes must place remains in a proper holding facility that preserves health and safety. That did not happen here. Although my siblings & I declined embalming, we were never informed that this funeral home had no refrigeration, & that our father's body would be left unrefrigerated to decompose. Had we been given that information, we most certainly would have made different arrangements. When I raised concerns, I received an extremely unprofessional and abusive call from Jeff Herrmann, the co-owner of the funeral home. During the call -- which I lawfully recorded -- he said to me, "the fucking motorcycle accident turned him into a slushie, not us." Additionally, although my family arranged for my father -- a veteran -- to receive full military honors, at the funeral GH Herrmann Funeral Home told us they "didn't have time" to allow the full Honor Guard ceremony to take place. This final disrespect toward my father, who served his country, was devastating to our family. The full audio recording of my conversation with Jeff Herrmann is available upon request.

They also offer Pre-Planning packages to avoid putting your loved ones through this experience. They are compassionate, kind, respectful of your loved ones, and they gently walk you through the selection process. They realize you're numb from grief and no one is ever ready for this process in our lives. Conkle's interior remains as it has been for years but is clean, well maintained and cared for even though the drapes are certainly out of style. I know! Who's looking at the drapes at a time like this? The chapels are large and can be increased or decreased as necessary. They try to accommodate every person's budget and are helpful even after the service when you need death certificates or have questions. One additional thought is many restaurants are located within walking distance of Conkles in Speedway for those who spend hours supporting the family. This was brought to my attention and much appreciated for those assisting the family and friends.

Conkle has been gracious, patient, informative and professional without pushing additional services or options. They allowed us space and time while guiding us through the necessary steps. Their staff was prompt and respectful when they came for Dad's body and they worked swiftly without rushing to provide that service. Les helped us through each step of planning the services and has continued to assist us with things like applying for a DD-214 to verify military service and securing additional death certificates. We have felt listened to, respected and valued. Recommendations are suggestions, highly personal, and I highly recommend Conkle.
