Pinewood Estate is a 20 room 12,900 square foot Mediterranean Revival style mansion in the seven and half acre Bok Tower Gardens. The mansions original name was "El Retiro," meaning "retreat" in Spanish. It was built in the early 1932 for Charles Austin Buck who made his fortune as a Bethlehem Steel vice president. Buck engaged Frederick Law Olmsted Jr. to design his winter estate. Olmsted had previously designed Edward Bok's Gardens and several private gardens inside the private community of Mountain Lake Estates. Olmsted collaborated with landscape architect William Lyman Phillips of the Olmsted Brothers firm to design the gardens and house placement. Philips is well known to me having designed a garden I have been to many times, Fairchild Tropical gardens in Miami. In 1930 architect Charles Wait was hired to design the house. Since the gardens were the most important to Buck they were designed first. There is a formal Mediterranean style garden with a Spanish frog fountain that leads into a stone grotto at the front of the house, an Oriental moon gate fountain off the dining room porch, and an English country garden with lawn and a pond. Charles Buck admired Latin lifestyle and architecture and he wanted his house to reflect that. Wait designed the home to look like an antique villa with a barrel tile roof, thick walls, carved doors and woodwork, and delicately detailed wrought iron. Three porches were added to give the family and their guests a sweeping view of the property and Bok Tower.
Nellie Lee Holt Bok, daughter-in-law of the gardens founder Edward W. Bok led an effort to acquire El Retiro. In 1970 it became part of Bok Toower Gardens and was renamed Pinewood Estate. Landscape architect, Rudy Favretti along with volunteers restored the mansion to its original beauty and people can tour it during visits to Bok Tower Gardens. Pinewood was added to the National Register of Historic Places on December 12, 1985.
Every year the mansion is lavishly decorated for the holidays. Holiday tours run from November 29 to January 5. In the weeks before opening for the holidays, Pinewood is closed while it is decorated. The decorating theme changes every year so no two visits are alike. A combination ticket can be purchased that includes both Pinewood Estates and Bok Tower Gardens.
