The fairway is probably 60-70 feet below you and stretches out towards the tree line. The par 3 2nd comes back a little to your left, and then you see the third hole as it wraps around water just below. Absolutely stunning. It's a tough track and I would say is fun from every set of tees (black, blue, white, gold, and even the red tees). Water comes into play on about a dozen holes. Highlights are the first tee box/first hole (it's a reachable par 5), the third as it wraps around a pond, the second half of the par 5 5th hole, the eighth hole looks like it's on top of the world, the views from the 10th tee box, the thirteenth hole (a brute of a par 5), and some of the best par 4s in Virginia (holes 15, 16, and 18). I stayed in the smaller of the two lodges that overlook the 18th green. We had a suite with a master with a king and another room with two double beds. Lots of space, two bathrooms, a kitchen, and a porch. It was also the cleanest room I may have ever stayed in. Some of the nicest views were from the porch that included the storm that rolled through at night and the fog that followed in the morning. There is only one restaurant on property and the food was excellent. Love that the dessert menu was never fixed. I had an ice cream cookie sandwich that was excellent. The people here truly make this place special. Whoever cleaned our room deserves a raise. Bo (the head pro) and Sherrie in the pro shop are maybe the nicest people I have met playing golf, and that is saying something. The wait staff and grounds crew were all extremely nice as well. I know there is a 5-star resort down the road that I visited for a bit, but I would much rather be here every day of the week. (Not saying I wouldn't turn down a free stay and play at the other place.) Needless to say this is now on my list for places to have a relaxing weekend getaway filled with great golf.

It has a nice mix of holes, some wide open and some that need more precision, some big flat greens and some smaller undulating ones. Water comes into play on a few holes. Beginning on no.1, a short dogleg right over water, you realize driver is your friend here. A solid drive over the trees will get you on or near the green. no.3 is probably the longest hole on the course but reachable in two. Not sure what hole but on the back there is an elevated tee that scares the crap out of me. I don't mind driving straight uphill for 150 feet, its the coming back down that bothers me. But a fun hole. Skyland is located on the NC/VA border just off the Blue Ridge Parkway. I remember once my best friend from college came to visit. It was winter but mild in Winston Salem. We drove the hour or so to Skyland and once we got on the parkway the snow began coming down so fast that the trees were covered before we got to the course. Cheap green fees. Less than 30 bucks on the weekend.

I also loved that even though there are plenty of houses on it, it did not feel that way. And regardless they were unique and pretty (from a designer perspective anyways). I had such a good time, I would go back again and again. The staff was super friendly and was kind enough to help me set up our day since I'm not the golfer in the family my husband usually handles those details. So they took that stress right off me. You'll be hard pressed to find a better all around golf experience in the great state of NC…read more My second time here and was invited by Matt H to join three others, Chris C and J O'Grady. This was the first time for the others but they have all played other Stranz courses, like Tobacco Road, True Bill & Caledonia. Like any other course, you'll experience some challenges your first time around and after that, you will play some holes completely different. This is rural Carolina golf in Randolph County and it feels like it. The word is of all the Stranz courses, this was his favorite and it's easy to see why. It's so plush and green, the natural landscape is scattered with boulders that are designed to create exceptional views. I especially like there are 5, yes FIVE Par 3's, all reasonable short and accessible. The Waterfall hole #15 is a work of golf art, just spectacular. It was a great experience from the beginning. Ron, the starter and car attendant helped us with our bags and was very friendly and professional. Jack & Keith in the clubhouse got us checked in quickly and directed us back to Ron to give us the low down on current course conditions, pace of play, cart operation etc. They are EV's with GPS included. When Ron told us about the 'out of bounds' play guidelines and recommended we not go in the woods and mentioned rattlesnakes and copperheads, that got our attention.
