The guy and I were enjoying a "date night away" in Dundee and were walking about to get a feel for the pubs in the area when we happened upon this gem.
The thing that drew us in was the fact that we could hear Harry Belafonte's Banana Boat Song (Day-O) paying and the whole pub singing along- (think the best scene in Beetlejuice: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AQXVHITd1N4)
Noticing it was an older crowd, we kept walking but soon realised that's exactly where we wanted to be, so we circled back and went in.
It was kinda like in the movies where you walk in to a bar in a new town and the record skips and everyone looks at you wondering what you're doing in there. Kinda like that, but the silence didn't last forever and the music kept playing and basically we were one of the locals in a few short seconds. This place is great!
I loved that there was a crowd around the jukebox and a lot of old songs were being played. Not a single one I didn't know, but not a single one the ones playing the music didn't know either. The bar staff were younger than us, which was quite comical, since almost everyone in this pub were pensioners it seemed. No bother, they were nice and helpful and got everyone's orders out at great speeds.
The drinks went down smoothly and we really enjoyed ourselves until a lady walking past our drinks knocked both over, acknowledged she did so and went about her business without even a sorry. That was the end of our night, but didn't put a damper on our mood from being in Pillar's Bar! read more
