It looks like a classic boring 1900's library from the outside but inside are smooth lines, workstations, subtle lighting and lots of up-to-date bookshelves. Great seating and a friendly library who booked a private study room for me (I learned that it can be done through the website) where I did a couple Zoom calls without disturbing my fellow library patrons. I know that last one might sound strange, but I promise it's not. That downtown library is likely to be historic and thus you get to observe the area's older architecture. Libraries tend to have an exhibit/area that shares local history. Again a chance to learn more about where you are. And my guilty pleasure, libraries have used books for sell. Like a bookstore, you never know what you'll find and you can support them at the same time. I stumbled upon this one while en route to a cake shop and knew I needed to stop in. The exterior is a beautiful, Roman-sque design and harkens back to when libraries were to place to be admired and revered. As I entered, there was a layout (much needed with three floors to navigate) with the bookstore on the ground level. I found a few books (for literally a total of $5) and was soon back on my cake mission. Were I a resident of the area, this would be a regular spot for me.

I was able to find a comfortable study carrel in the back where I set up my laptops to charge and then set down to work. Two hours of emails later, it's time to move on to the next stop. During that time, I was able to make a Zoom conference without disturbing anyone. A few librarians walking around but it's a quiet library. Fiction, non-fiction, reference, lots of DVDs available to borrow. You do not need to be a resident of the area to use the library or the wifi, but you have to be in order to borrow materials. Unless you're trying to build a personal library I do not understand why people buy their books. Why not take advantage of those tax dollars you're paying? When I'm with our grandkids this is one of our favorite places to visit.

I tried to donate a couple of hundred dollars worth of books to the library - most of them hard cover - all of them in excellent condition. After lugging the books into the library, I was informed that I could not donate books at the library (they would not accept them at the main library location). I had to call so-and-so and make arrangements to donate the books at another location. This was the last time I'll try to donate to the Kingsport Library.

Let me start by saying I'm a self-professed library nerd/frequent flyer, so I've visited a TON of…read morethem. The best thing about this one is the extended hours. The new building is spacious, but it seems to be the only thing that got an update. I was really disappointed. The clerks are friendly but unenthusiastic, and give the impression of wanting to do the least they can get by with. When someone asks for help, they point them in a general direction most of the time, rather than the typical library experience of taking them to what they're looking for. The gray-haired man and one clerk from the children's room are the only ones I've seen willingly leave the desk or converse with patrons. They don't have a lot of popular books you would expect to find, and can find, at libraries in surrounding counties, and the ones they do have are rarely in the proper place. The children's area, which consists of a carpeted stage, some stuffed animals and a few computers, is especially disorganized, even taking into account that kids pull out books and don't put them back correctly. The activities offered are toddler story time, monthly Lego club, no-frills movie nights and teen game nights. I appreciate what they do offer and don't mean to seem ungrateful, but I'm originally from a town with a population of 937 versus Mount Sterling's 7,209 and that library, which is older than me with the same clerks from when I was a child, has interactive children's toys, a better selection of books and WAY better activities happening more frequently. Libraries should feel magical! With passionate staff and proper management, this one would.
