Beautiful ceramics, bone china ornaments and jewellery line the displays, alongside handmade lights and lampshades, woven coasters and paintings. Each product is complemented by a description of the artist behind the creation detailing how it was made. A stunning collection of glass infused porcelain jewellery by local artist Neil Sykes is available, including his ceramic star shaped buttons. There is also a lovely selection of handmade, brightly coloured, hardback notebooks, perfect for diaries, if a little expensive. Sculptures and canvas oil paintings can be found on the other side of the shop, as well as striking drawings from Brighton illustrator Harriet Butler. One of Butler's most interesting drawings, of the Duke of York cinema, has pride of place amongst the rope and anchor draped window display. Although you'll be hard pressed to find a bargain in here, you can get your hands on some really unique and beautiful things, and be safe in the knowledge that you're supporting Brighton's artistic communities.

At this little shop they offer a fast, friendly and reasonable service though. They have a good deal of frames already made up which works out cheaper than having one made from scratch and the staff will happily mount your print up while you wait for a small charge. There was some fantastic prints and canvases in the window and on the shop floor. From Steve McQueen on the famous 'Great Escape' bike to some lovely ambient seaside paintings, you could really spend a lot of money here and have a house looking like a gallery.

Arranged on three compact floors, the gallery is currently holding a studio clear out, which is great opportunity to pick up some bargain limited edition prints. Anyway, Zorian stock seascapes, peoplescapes, plant potscapes, beach hutscapes, brightonscapes etc. They are all painted in the usual faux impressionistic manner with gaudy colours to reflect the contemporary penchant for colours that look like screen savers. Zorian and other sea front galleries have the best spots in town for people to see or buy art, why them do they not stock some of the better or more interesting work by Brighton's artists. But then perhaps that's not what people like to pop on their walls, I don't know because as I said I don't know them.

Zorian P Matthews is a wonderful artist, using the most vibrant and visually stunning colours to create some of the most beautiful landscape paintings I've ever seen sunsets, moonshine, oceans and more. I defy anyone not to love these paintings, which would create such a talking point in anyone's home. My favourite images have got to be Zorian's sunsets, painted in the most intense yellows, oranges and reds, closely followed by the landscapes incorporating loads of little rubber ducks coasting waves and drifting around icebergs. Beautiful, yet comic. If landscapes aren't your thing, you'll also find huge canvases of flowers and animals which are equally well-executed. Another place that I would go mad in with a credit card if I was made of money, I would definitely recommend this gallery for a look around if you're wandering along the arches.

I expected it to be small, but actually it expands down the length of the north wing of Southover Grange House. It is a shop/gallery which sells the work of the Sussex guild, a group of designers artists and craftspeople, whose members live and work in Sussex and the surrounding area. The various artists' and designers' work for sale includes pottery, jewellery, furniture and art. It ranges in price and style, from homey crockery painted with cartoon-y chickens, to elegantly painted silk clothing, to wooden furniture for upwards of two grand a piece. The guild also runs classes, such as how to make fused glass jewellery, or turn wooden bowls, or do quilting. To inquire about courses you can telephone or visit the shop.

Nestled in the hub of the North Laines, it's a two storey building that is packed floor to ceiling with the work of local artists. Ornate ceramics, sculptures and vases are nestled exhibited alongside mosaic mirrors, ornaments, lightboxes and lamps. There's also a big selection of jewellery, prints, canvases, cards and wall art. The sheer scale and diversity of the work can be a little overwhelming but if you look hard enough, you're bound to find something you like. My tip is to check out Helen Brown's woodcuts of the South Downs, Ellie Bond's soft toys and Screaming Lulu's embroidered portraits of 'Tragic Women'. If you want to surprise me, my favourite is the Bette Davis.

There's the usual mass of art works that you'll look at and wonder how anyone can afford, but equally there is a good deal of space given over to more affordable Photos and canvases. One in particular really caught the air in my throat. It was about three feet high with some beautifully intricate detail on a series of fish swimming through murky water, with beams of light penetrating the water around them... Very nice indeed. For those who aren't keen on paintings (or who already have enough on their walls), you'll still want to come and see the sculptures on offer. Though not as varied, they're just as unique... And if you're just looking for a gift, or something bright and cheap, there are also a series of bits and bobs - like coasters with Battersea power station on one side - that will fit the bill nicely. I also like the sweet layout, with its downstairs space and crammed (though not cramped) upstairs. All in all, a great little shop to pop in when wandering around Brighton.

Chameleon Gallery is another small gallery in the South Lanes, although of a more poppy variety…read morethan most of the more peculiar galleries in the area. With a pop-art style, including some very nice word-art of icons like Bowie and Guevara, Chameleon will probably appeal more to the younger generation, although the prices are a bit expensive for that. Again, this gallery is a little stuck between its style and its target, a common issue with Brighton businesses. The pieces of art on display are all very modern and somehow youthful; a lot of the pieces on display are almost semi-graffitied in style, making them much more 'cool' than a lot of the stuff available in other Brighton outlets. There are some more traditional items on display too, such as landscapes and the like, but Chameleon doesn't go in for the smaller jewelry items and the like. The location is excellent, Chameleon being perched on the edge of the South Lanes, and the shop itself is pleasantly designed: long and thin, with plenty of room to view the art, although it could do with an upstairs area, or something similar: there's definitely some expansion required here, as the pieces are all a bit close together. If you're looking to buy some cooler art, Chameleon is a great place to start. There's so much art available in Brighton, I'd recommend some window shopping before purchasing, especially considering the prices at Chameleon are quite high. Still, if you see a piece you like, go for it!

There's a variety of different styles threaded throughout the gallery but the main aesthetic seems to contemporary pop art. Endearingly, there's a couple of different canvases of Brighton alongside moody landscapes, portraits and depictions of iconic figures including Morrissey, Mick Jagger and the biggest chameleon of all, David Bowie. * Chameleon's website appears to be down at the moment but I'm assuming they probably take part in the Arts Council's Own Art scheme.
