Your lively hood is at risk if you rent from these slumlords.
We rented a house from these (before mentioned) slumlords for three years. The house was listed as a 5 bedroom, 2 bath house with a brand-new gas heater. Upon moving in we discovered that the so-called brand-new gas heater was actually a nonworking half full fifty gallon oil heater. When they finally sent somebody to take a look at it, they decided it needed to be replaced and continued to do nothing about it.
During this time, the temperature in the house was under 50 degrees. only after 2 months of burning the fireplace and the wood stove did we finally break the 50°f mark. The house continued to be under 60°f for the rest of the winter.
Also during this time, the house had single-pane windows. We were promised double-pane windows for the whole house within the first year of tenancy. It wasn't until winter of the following year that they decided to replace half of the windows (during which the house was again, near freezing).
After they replaced the other half of the windows that summer, we asked again about the heater that was nonfunctional. they replied by sending us a letter saying that they were raising our rent from $1,200.00 to $1,300. We believe this action was executed out of spite.
We collected firewood all year for three years just to keep the house at a liveable temperature during the cold winter months. Right before the winter of 2014, we received a letter saying that we needed to move our firewood off of the front porch or they were going to terminate our tenancy. When we responded saying it was our only source of heat in the house where they had promised us a brand-new gas heater, They simply retaliated by sending us a termination of tenancy letter.
We played rent in-full every month even after they raised the rent (I wonder how they paid for the windows).
We cleaned the house top to bottom to ensure we received our $1,500.00 deposit back. Instead what we got was a $6,500.00 bill for cleanup, electrical outlet covers (that were busted up and painted over when we moved in), painting (which we had done the bedrooms ourselves), replacing the carpet, changing the locks (which is every renter's responsibility) and an assortment of other little things that are none of our responsibilities. THEY ARE KEEPING OUR $1,500.00 DEPOSIT AND CHARGING US OVER $5,000.00 FOR LEAVING THE HOUSE IN BETTER SHAPE THAN IT WAS IN WHEN WE STARTED RENTING IT.
When we first moved in, the walls were patch-painted with cheap paint. When we tried to remove scuffs from the wall they would smear and the paint rubbed off down to the drywall. This resulted in the tenants painting the bedrooms with higher quality, whiter and all-around better paint.
The carpet in the downstairs was quite obviously the cheapest carpet they could possibly find. when we attempted to vacuum, the threads in the carpet would pull up and get tangled in the brush. we complained multiple times but decided the best solution was to cover the problem areas with duct tape for the duration of our tenancy.
When we moved in the vents were crammed with dust, trash, and miscellaneous swept-in debris.
When our oven stopped working and we pulled the old one out to install the new one, all 3 of the surrounding walls and the floor were covered in a thick layer of grease which the tenants scraped and scrubbed off themselves.
When we moved in the garage door had dog feces on it.
The tenants insulated the laundry room.
The downstairs shower had black mold, floor peeling up, holes in wall, tenants refrained from use.
