I wish I could give negative stars. This place is a classic example of the exploitative nature of our country's healthcare system, which is an issue bigger than myself and Yelp reviews, so, with that in mind, I will boil it down to: If you don't have a copay or have a high deductible plan, expect to pay DOUBLE what they quote you per visit. Their practices are misleading, opaque, and intentionally exploit (and perpetuate) the consumer's ignorance about the services they receive... but this is something you only get to experience when you actually have to look at your medical bills, and they know you probably won't. Before I even realized any of this, I found another PT (Washington Wellness) that quoted me the exact same fee per visit and, crazy enough(!), that was how much I was charged. Shocking, I know. On top of that, the services they offered were far superior. Is it just ironic that they both quoted me the exact same price yet Physiotherapy Associates charged me twice that amount while providing me with fewer services than WW? Yeah, probably. In sum... if you have a high deductible plan (or worse, no insurance), do NOT go here. I would also recommend not going here if you don't feel like supporting a business that perpetuates the corrupt and exploitative nature of our current healthcare system. There are many places that can offer you the same/ better treatment who deserve your money far more. read more

This place is excellent! I came here after starting off with a horrible PT and about 6 months after my injury, so I was in pretty poor condition. I started off with Stephanie who was great, she worked miracles on my injury and gave me great exercises to do at home. I have a really demanding schedule and could not always see her my minimal available time slots, so I started seeing Chris too. Chris was excellent too and identified the cause of a strange pain I could not resolve. The admin staff is great here too. They are very organized and always answer the phone on the first call. The best thing I've found about Physiotherapy Associates is they spend a solid 30 minutes doing manual manipulation where as other places just give you 5 minutes and the rest is spent on exercises. Upon first glancing at the Physiotherapy Associates website, it's easy to think you're headed to the "McDonald's" of physical therapists -- a chain company scattered throughout the country, priding itself on service. But despite having "600+ offices in 30+ states nationally," Physiotherapy Associates on K Street is a 'mom and pop' at heart. Recently moved from I Street, the new office/gym is easily accessible by bus, cab and/or Farragut North Metro (red line) and Foggy Bottom Metro (blue and orange lines). And in a place where everyone seems to remember your face and/or name... Once you're in, you're in. Expect little-to-no time sitting in the waiting room for your PT to call you back to a table... A plus for those [like me] attending rehab on a lunch break and/or quick escape from the office. Upon each visit, your trainer will make you feel at ease, while checking on your progress and updating you with your road to recovery. I would recommend Fernando or Monica as your PT [but would trust any of the other reps there]. Both trainers seem to know what they're talking about, comprehend what you're talking about and just seem to enjoy talking with you in general. Not to mention, they always provide reasoning behind the advice they give you about your recovering injuries, which is good for people [again, like me] who will push themselves beyond their limit unless they have a legitimate reason not to. One thing to note: If you hear your trainer say, "Let me work this area out a little bit," ... It's going to hurt. But no pain, no gain, right?! Four out of five stars, only because I've never been to another PT [...nor do I ever want to again]. read more

This is corporate physical therapy and it's gone bad. First of all, they clearly take more patients than they can handle and that affects everything from the scheduling to the quality of your care. PT is something you need to do every week. But some weeks you would try to book an appointment for the following week and they would have ONE available time slot. Doesn't work if you are supposed to be doing PT twice a week or if you have possibly any other commitments. And I once called the day before to cancel an appt, because I had a work emergency, and they charged me a $35 cancellation fee because it was 22 hours before the scheduled time. I'm sure they had a waiting list of people who would take my spot because I was always on the list trying to see someone. Second, you show up and spend a whole five minutes with the actual physical therapist. A tech walks you through your exercises and doesn't evaluate or try to encourage progress. Don't waste your time with people who can't give you the time of day. read more

Over the years, I have had physical therapy for several issues: lower back, knees, etc. I have never been to a better PT facility, or had as good a physical therapist, as Stephanie. When I first met with her, she watched me walk and could identify the problem immediately. She did a lot of hands-on manipulation, and we went through a lot of exercises I could do on my own. She watched me closely when I was learning them, and corrected my form if she needed to. Other physical therapists stepped in when Stephanie wasn't available, and they were great, too. They were very up-to-date with the latest technology, too, in keeping your treatment and training records. The front-desk staff is also great; professional and mindful about sending reminders so you don't miss appointments, and I never had to wait past my appointment time. One of the goals of a good practice is that you're not there forever (and insurance only pays for a certain number of visits, anyway). The staff at Physiotherapy Associates focus on helping you get back to your former activity levels, and are invested in your success. read more

I received outstanding physical therapy and emotional support from Sabrina Altema, a Doctor of Physical Therapy, at Physiotherapy Associates for about ten months after a terrible experience with hip replacement surgery. I considered her my "Coach" then & still do. She saw that I had the power for significant improvement and helped me see & develop that power. I am extremely grateful for the support she gave me during the toughest part of my recovery. My initial hip implant was one of the metal-on-metal hip resurfacing implants Some brands of these implants were recalled by their manufacturers. Over about five years, the metal-on-metal device degraded to the point of failure, leaving heavy metals in my bloodstream, breaking my left hip and causing me to have several surgeries to replace the device, remove metal fragments from my hip and fight persistent infections. I was in a hospital & its onsite rehab site for about fourteen weeks between October 2012 and April 2013. During this time I also had physical therapy at home, but made little progress due to being overweight, in pain, and sick. I transitioned from an electric scooter to forearm crutches to a walker. I started with Sabrina in the spring of 2013. I was using a walker slowly, with great difficulty, unable maintain my balance for very long, and in a lot of pain. I could not bend over and had fallen more than once and been unable to stand on my own, so I was weak, scared and had no confidence that I would have the mobility that I'd known before the device broke my hip. Sabrina had me start with very small exercises to build my flexibility, balance, and confidence. She had me do many of my early exercises lying down on a table using a stretch band, moved me to "mini squats," walking unassisted, and stepping up and down slowly from boxes that were much shorter than regular steps. Very gradually, at first, she increased the challenges, incorporating my need to improve my balance. I had overcompensated for my weakness on the left by over-using my right hip & leg. It was a major challenge to begin work on correcting that problem. Over time, Sabrina increased the height of the steps, the difficulty of the other exercises, and encouraged me to try more challenging movements like walking side-to-side with stretch bands on my ankles. She gave me exercises for the swimming pool. There are two weight machines in the Physiotherapy Associates center & I began doing leg presses & leg lifts with gradual weight increases. I went from using the walker to a cane and now walk unassisted! I am certain that I benefited from working with a PT who has a doctorate. I was probably more challenging than the average patient. One day, after trying to climb some outside stairs that I was not ready for, I came to my session really upset & discouraged, asking if I would ever be able to climb a flight of stairs again. She listened (not something that all health care providers do well) and helped my cope with the disappointment. I continued to improve as a result of her expertise. In March 2014, I transitioned with her assistance to working with a personal trainer at a gym. First I went once to Sabrina and once to the trainer each week. Now I see the trainer twice a week. I am much improved, but I am still working hard on pretty basic skills like being able to step up into the bath tub without a cane. BUT I can ride the recumbent bike at the gym for 30 mins pretty fast at level 7. I can do pretty good (not "mini") squats, and work my upper and lower body pretty hard with a variety of machines & free weights. And I can climb a couple flights of stairs. Dr. Sabrina Altema got me started. She is excellent! read more

This is one of the best physical therapy offices I've been to in the DC area. I've had a few injuries that required therapy and have tried several places, but I have to say that this office is really stands out. The front office staff are friendly and really try to help you with appointment scheduling. I guess I've gotten used to doctors' offices where the schedulers think you're just there to cause problems for them. This office staff actually seems to want to work with the patients. I was happy that they gave me a printout of my scheduled appointments. The therapists are cheerful and knowledgeable and have a way of managing more than one patient at a time and yet not making you feel like you've been forgotten or abandoned. Stephanie always answers my questions about what's going on with my joints and why things hurt. It's very personalized care, and I don't feel like I'm just being given a standard set of exercises. And more to the point, I can see that my recovery is going well! I highly recommend Physiotheraphy Associates on K street. read more

It really works! I suffered from shoulder pain, was prescribed NSAIDS and PT. I was randomly assigned to Christine B. She was kind, attentive and very knowledgable. All I had to do was show up twice weekly at my convenience, and follow the few simple exercises she gave me each week... and it worked! After my first injury, I asked friends for recommendations of physical therapy offices in the area. Several of them recommended this place. I really enjoyed this place. The staff is friendly and quickly learns your name. Between several injuries and plenty of rehab time, I've seen most of the therapists there and would recommend them all. They take the time to work with you and really solve the mystery of aches and pains. They obviously stay educated in their field and have a plethory of activities to help you build skills. There is also a wide range of people who use their services - I sought them out for sports related injuries but there were all different ages and all sorts of ailments in the office. I've also sent several of my roommates to this office, and they've also enjoyed their experience. I'm not sure about the other Physiotherapy Associates branches, but I imagine they are all staffed as well. I highly recommend anyone in their office. read more

This place is great. I highly recommended. I've been here for more than a year and a half for three different things. Physiotherapy Associates treated me after my knee surgery and now they are helping me for back pain. I usually see Christine, she's great, knowledgeable and caring. My wife has been going to them since May 2016 for physiotherapy treatment. We selected them because they were conveniently located. Unlike all other healthcare providers, we were asked to pay for the services until they could clear our deductibles with our insurance company (Aetna/Innovation Health). They said this is simple and we dont have to worry as we will get a refund. After the 3rd visit, the deductibles were met, but they still insisted on continuing to get payment from us saying this is their policy and we will get the refund soon. It is now 2 months since the deductibles have been met, and their accounts/billing department continue to hold our money saying that they cannot issue a refund until the insurance company does not release all their payments. In other words, they dont trust the Aetna. I wonder if and when we will ever get our money back. They are not willing to commit to a date on when they will pay us back.. This is the worst experience we have had with any healthcare provider in terms of payments. No other healthcare provider asked us for payments in advance knowing that we are fully covered. However, i will state that their physiotherapist Ellen at Ashburn VA is very good in terms of her services. But due to this frustration on payments, we may have to look elsewhere to get our services. If you are considering getting services from them, make sure that you sort out the payment issues first with them. Otherwise they will hold your money and you never know if and when you will get your money back. read more

Very knowledgeable and with a great personality, she made the experience pleasant and productive. Hopefully I don't ever have another need for PT, but I would return to Amanda if I did. I went through an injury on my shoulder last year, after which I stopped all types of exercises (big mistake) to heal from the injury. After half a year, I realized I had frozen shoulder, neck pain and very bad back pain! I was getting injured more frequently doing daily chores. It was getting to the point where I couldn't sit down at my desk at work for one more than an hour or even lift plates and glasses from cabinets. After two bad experiences at two of the physical therapy places in DC, I was very pessimistic about physical therapy sessions in general. I decided to give one more try at Physiotherapy Associates solely because of good reviews on Yelp! I was randomly assigned to Christine. And on the very first day I realized I was coming to a great positive environment and a great therapist! Christine is, simply put, amazing, and she is the reason why I got back to my normal active lifestyle! It is really hard to find doctors/therapists who are knowledgeable while being extremely caring and understanding at the same time. Christine listens to you and asks all the right questions. She works with you and what your capable of at first and then she sets out goals to exceed your capacity to heal faster. She managed my expectations and told me it would take about 4-5 months to recover from frozen shoulder and it indeed took 4-5 months. She told me I had to repeat the exercises that I do in her sessions at home and I followed her precisely and I saw the results right away. Every time I came to her sessions, I could stretch a little more and I could see the results. And after every session with her, I was so relaxed and my back pain and neck pain would get better. She wrote down every single exercise to do them at home because I would forget them. She is very persistent and she will push to the extent you can push yourself. After 5 months of physical therapy, I can now go back to my normal active lifestyle - I resumed my Karate classes (which was impossible to do while I had frozen shoulder) and started running. I think I under estimated how much frozen shoulder affects one's lifestyle and I am so thankful to Christine for helping me recover from this. Personality wise, she is just a wonderful person, super nice, so easy to talk to, and she never underestimates your pain. I highly highly recommend her. Along with Christine, all the staffs and receptionists there were very nice and you can tell they really care for their patients and love seeing them improve and get better. The setting is a one big hall space (they do have rooms as well for first time patients), so you really see all the patients and how everyone is working hard to recover, whether it's an injured athlete or someone like me with frozen shoulders or senior folks healing from injuries. I felt encouraged, motivated by each staff who was helping me and I think they created a wonderful culture so each patient is encouraged and taken care of. Everyone knew my name and I knew their names! The culture they created over there, it is positive and it works! I recommend all my friends to go here for any type of injuries. My insurance at the time was BCBS and I paid $30 per session. After 5 months, I started coming once a week as it was a little expensive for me. By then, Christine just told me to do the exercises I learnt from her at home and I was healing by myself. It was worth every penny! read more

I went here a couple of times and all I can say is what a waste of time and money!! Lazy, careless and disorganized is how I'd describe it. They pretty much make you do the exercises they tell you to do at home and slap on a hot towel. Barely any correcting of form nor good direction. The therapists mostly chit chat together and don't formulate a plan for you. I had one literally unaware of my injury (she admitted not reading my file) and would think out loud for the next thing to do, as one would do when they're not prepared. As if trying to fill the time, they waste your time! After I finished an exercise alone, a junior assistant therapist literally told me that my therapist had to go to a 'meeting' with another colleague...they were next to me and I can here them discussing his weekend trip and she was giving him travel advise! At one point I was told that if the towel didn't get hit enough yo hit the bell but when I did, no one showed up...wasted 10 minutes for nothing! People, we all have jobs to get to you know!!! It's like they heard people in and then leave them to work alone as they order patients to do random on-the-fly exercises to keep them busy. I'll never return! read more

I cannot say enough good things about Physiotherapy Associates. Therapist Sabrina Altema is extremely competent and caring, diagnosing a problem my orthopedic surgeon missed and setting me on a path to recovery. When I needed a second knee surgery she not only helped me find a skilled surgeon, but went beyond the call of duty to send emails and make calls on my behalf to ensure my care was coordinated and comprehensive. She also kept a box of Kleenex on hand and understood my frustration as a life-long runner sidelined by pain and injuries. The other staff are similarly professional and kind. The receptionists are friendly and helpful and the technicians make repetitive workouts fun. And I have never waited more than a minute for my appointment after arriving, which is helpful when you need physical therapy multiple times a week. I can honestly say that I've never had such a good experience with a medical provider in my life as I have had with Physiotherapy Associates. read more
