Wax Skulls!…read more SITREP Should you find yourself in Medford, OR on a Thursday morning, DEFINITELY head on over to the Medford Armory, where - in the Armory's parking lot - you will find the Rogue Valley Growers & Crafters Market ("Rogue Market")! http://www.yelp.com/biz_photos/rogue-valley-growers-and-crafters-market-medford?select=JZqbYnqxY1QMX_2gxbEpLA THE SETUP Like most Farmer's markets, Rogue Market has a lot of great produce - even floral - options, that are all spread out in nice spacious, roomy booths, with ample room between them so that people can stop, chat, compare items with each other, etc.: http://www.yelp.com/biz_photos/rogue-valley-growers-and-crafters-market-medford?select=FTCIRkoEOfgnTes8qxp2KQ MARKET POPULARITY - BASED ON GREAT DISCOUNTS And where many markets I hit down here in California pay "lip service" to providing discounts from the main grocery store chains, Rogue Market actually has some pretty profound steals, such as these raspberries: http://www.yelp.com/biz_photos/rogue-valley-growers-and-crafters-market-medford?select=MOEIewyb2w2KdoOszwzp8w My lovely hostess, Yelper GoGo M., took me around the market with her and I could see the low cost of many vegetables (onions, cucumbers, etc.) and fruit (melons, watermelons, berries, etc.) compared to what we saw in a couple of cursory trips to the local food chains. CHEEEEEESE! I was surprised to see SEVERAL cheese vendors on hand, hocking their tasty cheese wares! Usually at the Sacramento markets I hit in the Downtown grid, we are lucky to have just one. The cheeses were varied - from soft to hard, goat to cow - they were all over the board, with artisan quality: http://www.yelp.com/biz_photos/rogue-valley-growers-and-crafters-market-medford?select=9TuPNBKt0eo_ZBGpLdoYBA And the vendors eager for us to try their samples - and to good effect: we bought several varieties. HOT FOOD VENDORS & FOOD TRUCK VENDORS Many of the produce sellers also provide some great hot food options. We enjoyed several vegetable & cheese "turnover" pockets that were absolutely delish, with options ranging from Mushroom or Southwestern, etc.: http://www.yelp.com/biz_photos/rogue-valley-growers-and-crafters-market-medford?select=MOEIewyb2w2KdoOszwzp8w And yep - the Food Truck mania has reached Southern Oregon, including this one tasty Peruvian vendor with some great Spanish options. http://www.yelp.com/biz_photos/rogue-valley-growers-and-crafters-market-medford?select=vsGAG6zJk2tBuwZljvUytw CRAFTS! But where Rogue Market really stands out from most standard farmer's markets is in it's craftwares. I DO have to give props to the Saturday morning Midtown Market in Sacramento, because that one comes closest to what I experienced here in Medford. In both scenarios, there are many different craftsman that have some exceptional quality products. THE BEES KNEES! One vendor that grabbed my eye was the gentlemen selling delicate wax figurines. They were pretty spectacular! My favorite would have to be the skulls, and there were several varieties of those: http://www.yelp.com/biz_photos/rogue-valley-growers-and-crafters-market-medford?select=iMNspK2KwpIxAS6hNIlc5g THE LOWDOWN Rogue Market is a great stop on a Thursday morning when prowling about Medford, OR.

Well, that may be a bit of an exaggeration, but five years after my first impression of the store, Im still thrilled that I live so close to a great organic grocery store. When you live in Nebraska and the closest grocery store is 45 minutes away from you, and the closest store with a moderate selection of organic products is almost 2 hours away, you really appreciate a store like this in a town like this where there are many organic options to choose from. What caught my eye that first time, and it hasnt changed over the past five years: an excellent selection of products I actually use. No having to figure out "is this organic?" when looking at the produce, where some is organic and some isnt; its all organic here. Wide aisles, sparkling floors. Staff who have become friends. Everything is so clean. Theyll special order for you. And for me, no having to drive 2 hours to find "something, anything" thats organic. Yes, there are other stores in town that offer organic choices. But for a complete selection of everything I need, from sources I trust, that I know are always going to be there, PLUS a Senior Discount Day on Thursdays and fitness club discounts on Fridays, to me Gooseberries cant be beat. Shop local, shop the independent businesses; keep those businesses prospering, even if it costs a little more. Its worth it in the long run.
