Over the past year or so, I've been at The Bothy quite a lot. It's a pretty wee cafe in the pretty…read morewee town of Burghead, with a range of good fresh food and delicious cakes. The place has undergone a bit of a revamp/extension over the past year, and the outdoor seating area is now full of summery bright benches. I was a bit disappointed with the service today, and as a result probably won't be visiting again. Although it was a busy sunny day, it seemed that some of the staff couldn't really be bothered working. We were ignored coming into the cafe (in fairness, there is a sign explaining that customers are to find their own seats, but a hello would have been nice). After finding a clear bench round the back, we decided on what to have. The choice of food is really good and there was an extensive list of specials on offer too. In particular, the langoustine looked amazing when it was served to another table. We were just after a wee bite to eat and so settled on some sandwiches and a portion of fries. Our bench was dirty with tomato ketchup, so when the lady came over with our drinks I asked if it was possible for her to clean it, to which she nodded and said someone would be over to do that. There was possibly more enthusiasm in a lamppost than in the girl who came over to wipe the table. After giving the stains a weak rub, she explained that it was really difficult to get ketchup off the wooden surface, and then gave up. It was obvious she just couldn't be bothered wiping it up. If the tables are that tricky to clean, then maybe they should consider getting wipe-clean covers instead. This might sound pedantic but when you are paying over 30 quid for 4 lunches then you expect the basic service to be there. When our meals arrived, there was no cutlery or napkins provided and, more importantly, no chips came. When I went up to ask about this, there was no apology when it transpired there had been a mix-up in the kitchen. Having been a waitress myself, I understand that there are some days, especially when it's hot and sunny, that you just can't be bothered with working. But, unfortunately, you've got to get on with it. The staff today were just a bit rude. And, despite the food being tasty, I won't be in a rush to give them more of my money in the future.

Very nice bistro in the lovely village of Burghead. Very good, fresh, local food…read more A young, but friendly staff. Nice seaside decor with lots of items for sale. The egg mayo sandwich was very good. The chips divine. The scones are yummy. If you are in Burghead to see the Pictish fort and museum be sure to stop in here for lunch or a wee cuppa.
