Hola Me Llamo EJ. Me encanta Fluent City!…read more First of all, I have learned more than just that from Fluent City, but they have really helped me improve my Spanish skills tremendously! After taking two courses here, I really appreciate how knowledgable and organized the classes are. With less than 12 students per class, the teachers really encourage students to get to know each other and really speak only the language. If you don't like the class and/or teacher within the first two classes, you can get a refund or switch to another class! I have tried other language courses in DC, but Fluent City really helped me learn and use my Spanish most proficiently. It really takes a lot of extra time and effort to be more fluent on the language yourself, but in the city of DC, Fluent City tries their best to make sure that you are Fluent in your City!!! Offering a variety of languages other than Spanish, Fluent City is the way to go especially if you want to use it for employment, take up a new language, or just explore the world!

Her lesson plans were the perfect pace and Spanish 3 turned out to be a great level for me -- I had only taken two years of Spanish in high school, and just kind of stumbled my way through travel for 10+ years. Could not recommend Pineda's class enough. It's a challenge to follow along sometimes because she explains everything in Spanish (and she's from Barcelona), but at level 3, you need to be getting comfortable with hearing everything in Spanish anyway. Gracias por todos!

I have taken 180 hours of Sorani Kurdish through MESALI so far via Zoom and plan to continue. She availed herself to all our questions and translation support requests. MESALI will work with your academic institution to give you course credit if needed. Learning languages is an enriching way to spend your time and grow- this is a great way to pursue that.

I've been a MESALI Arabic student for two-years, and thus far enrolled…read morein five semesters. I'm a repeat and committed MESALI student for several reasons: As an undergraduate at a local DC university, I must complete a language requirement and attain a certain level of proficiency for my degree. Unfortunately, I haven't been able to obtain that proficiency without additional assistance from the MESALI program. I have gotten further with my Arabic comprehension in less time at MESALI, than I would have with my university classes alone, clearly showing that MESALI has a comparative advantage on quality of instruction and time efficiency. Additionally, while a semester course at my University costs nearly $7,000, at MESALI a 60 hour semester course costs only $1,500, a significant savings. Also, MESALI has a recognized Foreign Language Area Studies (FLAS) summer program, which helped prepare me for the fall university course. I've had three adjunct professors thus far, Youssef, Najah, and Ross, and they have all been excellent. Each of them comes from different countries, so they all present learning the language differently. This complementary teaching approach has helped immensely. Perhaps the best part of the teaching instruction is that all of the faculty are trained in Inner Language Roundtable (ILR) standards; the U.S. government standard for teaching foreign languages. I'm a believer and am committed to MESALI!

I looked forward to being around people who enjoyed teaching English, and meeting students from all around the world. If I ever came across a family member or friend who needed English support, I would definitely send them here as well. From a volunteer perspective, the Center provides so much support and training for its teachers (who do not need to be professional teachers, so this helps), including a ready-made curriculum and textbooks. Though I've been an ESL tutor in the past, having this institutional support was important for me as I wanted to be well-prepared for my students. The teaching set-up also requires each class to be taught by two teachers, which is very helpful! The students come from all around the world and have many different reasons for being in the program. I loved laughing with them, learning from them (as well as my co-teachers!!), and even learning a few things about the English language myself.

The transition was seamless and my learning experience, which was stellar under Simple, has continued to be equally as good under District, probably because Gerardo has been my teacher the entire time. He's energetic, friendly, patient and very receptive to feedback, which is important in a small class setting where people may have different learning styles and preferences. He also takes the time to point out when certain phrases/words are used more commonly in Spain vs. Latin America. Classes are held in a WeWork space. If you're not familiar with it, a bunch of different companies rent out glass paneled office spaces on the same floor. There's a lounge/kitchen in the lobby area that's accessible to all, which is nice because they always have free coffee and tea, along with plenty of space to hang out and study or eat.

Great concept, terrible execution. If your class does not have enough students (or in some cases, an instructor to teach it), they will simply stop communicating with you. They will ignore your requests for information or refunds. You will spend weeks moving your schedule around and waiting for information. DC has a lot of competent, busy, intelligent people who will support this type of thing, but they are careless with their time, money, and resources. I work in the field of international development -- where I am a trainer myself and where I work with trainers all the time. I can say without a doubt, Melissa is the best trainer and teacher I have ever come across. She has a real gift. Here are the reasons why: 1) Melissa can put you at ease right away. I knew very little French when I first met her and I was self-conscious about it. Melissa made me feel like I was talking to a best friend. She assured me that I was right where I needed to be for the moment and gave me all the tools and confidence I needed for the moments to come. She made me WANT to speak and WANT to learn. With her, an arduous task became pleasant. She made me feel at ease and capable of learning. 2) She didn't just help me improve during the hours we had class, but she also gave me the right resources to improve outside of class. One of those resources would have cost me hundreds of dollars if I would have purchased it myself, but Melissa gave it to me for free and taught me how to use it. The resources she provided increased my speaking level almost immediately and made French a daily habit for me. 3) Melissa meets you where you are. She can quickly assess your abilities and meet you there. She pushes you just enough. 4) Melissa is so incredibly pleasant. She's kind and she's responsive and she interacts like a friend. She makes you WANT to show up for lessons just to spend time with her, and that is a rare kind of person! 5) You improve! You improve QUICKLY! Before you know it, you are speaking French!!! Even if you are like me -- and you have been convinced all your life that you will never learn a language -- you actually end up learning and speaking! And Melissa celebrates alongside you. She takes joy in your progress! It all feels pretty magical. Simply put, I cannot recommend Melissa enough! She is worthy of all the stars and all the praise!
