Instead, they offered me a few 1-bedroom, 1-bath condos--completely different from what I originally booked. I told them to cancel my reservation if they couldn't provide a comparable replacement. They cancelled but still charged me a 2.5% cancellation fee. The problem is, it wasn't my fault: they rented me a condo that wasn't available and couldn't provide a proper substitute. Yet they still kept $218 of my money. That's dishonest and reflects very poor business practices. I strongly recommend staying far away from this company.

The home was advertised as four "spacious" bedrooms, when, in fact one was an office with no linens, no closet, no dresser and a sofa sleeper. All office furniture had to be removed for the sofa to unfold, and one teenager had to sleep on a mattress, taken from a bunkbed, and placed on the floor. There was inadequate space for the clothes of two teenaged boys for two weeks. Additionally, one of the rooms...a 350 square foot sitting room off the kitchen, had no electrical wiring and, thus, no electricity. This constituted 15% of the 2100 total square feet of the house. It was unusable at night, and because of two step downs, was dangerous. The owner's family had apparently flushed diapers down the toilet and created plumbing problems. Two toilets wouldn't flush and a tub wouldn't drain. Plumbers had to come to the house four times during our month. Customer service was spotty...Amy provided good service but the owner provided poor service, poor communications and was arrogant.

They overcharge for everything and then even charge when you pay on their website with your checking account. Then they charge you for services you don't even receive. And forget about trying to resolve an issue. No one answers the phone nor do they respond to emails. Once they have your lease agreement, you are screwed.

But, I had such a horrible experience, I wanted to warn others and perhaps save them from the same experience we had. Please explore other rental companies if you are looking for a vacation spot on Sanibel or Captiva...and here's the sad story: We had a terrible experience with the condo we rented and the service (or lack thereof) provided by RE/MAX of the Islands. Specific to the condo: the key was difficult to operate (it wouldn't turn) but it didn't matter. We learned after a few days that the door lock did not work...the condo could be opened by simply turning the handle even when it was supposed to be locked. And RE/MAX did NOTHING; in fact, Sarah at RE/MAX hung up on us every time we called. We filed a police report to protect ourselves and the police sergeant who came out to investigate suggested that we take our valuables with us each time we left the condo. We also had the following issues: inoperable ceiling fan, shower doors off track, safe not operational, WiFi not operational. The bedroom smelled funny which makes me question their cleaning methods. I've traveled a lot for business and pleasure and have never had such a disappointing experience. I've had national management oversight for a team of over 200 customer service professionals so I understand what makes good customer service. This was definitely in the "not good" column. I would definitely NOT recommend using RE/MAX of the Islands to rent a vacation property. There are lots of other options on the Islands and I strongly urge you to rent through a source other than RE/MAX!
