The original Romanesque Church erected around 1000, with a later gothic vault, still forms the core of the building, upon which Anton Landes (1712-1764) lavished the beautiful stucco decoration we see today. The church is closed except for services, but Landes' work clan be seen through the protective grill. In the main church the style is white, highlighted with gold leaf, which gets more elaborate the closer it gets to the high altar. The walls and ceilings have fresco panels depicting biblical stories and the lives of saints. The side chapel is open for prayer and decorated in white, pink and gold, the overall impression reminding one of icing on a wedding cake.

It was always great to explore the marvelous pictures and golden sculptures. The Old Chapel is not as impressive as the Cathedral St. Peter, which is not far from here but it is at least as beautiful as it. If you will visit the Cathedral you should really visit the Old Chapel as well because it's just a way of 100-200 metres and it's really worth it! It's really a must see!

Just one little anecdote that always amuses me is that the builders could not agree on the style of the towers and this is why each tower is different. A feud that is permanently displayed on the towers of a church no less... Anyway, take a close look at this church both inside and out. There are so many details to see, that even after years coming here, I still seem to discover new details. A must see for sure.

In any case, amazing church with so much art to see in just an hour I spent there (I was with a colleague and did not want to spend the usual amount of time I would do in this type of sacred buildings with so many details and art in every corner). I can't believe it was bombarded during WWII, then rebuilt with great effort. The stained glass art is amazing and I was happy to see that during our visit it was an exhibit about the artist who created all of them originally. It was a very well paid 2 euros visit (I dont like to pay to enter in a church, I am more pro-donations, but still it was worth it). One suggestion is that I would prefer not to have a gift shop inside the church. That devalue both the religious experience and the artistic value, converting the whole thing in a theme park. That is the only part I disliked during my visit as well as the attitude of the young girl that was collecting the money...I got confused of door of our way out and she started yelling at me: no, not there, stop stop...which made me feel weird. They told me I could go up the stairs to the top. I just did something similar at the Prague castle and my legs didn't want any more of what seems like a forever climbing up.

How many flights of stairs is it to get to the top? A…read morezillion and then you lost count? This could very well be the stairway to heaven. I don't work out and I'm not at all religious or spiritual, but this one time last year I walked up those zillion flights of stairs at the Cathedral of St. Bartholomew, so I figure I'm good on both points for at least a few years. I'll be real, Plzen isn't the prettiest place you're ever going to see. In fact, it's kind of grey, industrial, and worn down, but the city-center with the Cathedral of St. Bartholomew sure makes for a nice view... if you can see beyond the smog. Climbing to the top is no small feat, and certainly not for the claustrophobic, but it's free and if you bring a marking device, you can graffiti the crap out of this historic building. I mean, I didn't and I don't know if officially it's allowed, but about a gajillion people before you did so at this point it probably doesn't matter. I think it enhanced it overall, but I'm into modern art and could be in the minority here. If you're in Plzen, it's redic if you don't check this place out. Plus, there's really not a ton of other sh*t to do in this town soooo... just do yourself the favor. If you're touristing in Plzen this is one of very few thriving things in the community (this in the Pilsner Urquell factory) that you should def check out.

This gorgeous church was built in the 1200s. It was decorated beautifully with trees for Christmas. It was quite cold inside as it was a cool day, and there is definitely no heat. However, that somehow adds to the charm. It is quite interesting that on the site of the church there was a chapel around 1070. It's amazing to know that there has been some type of religious building on this site for almost 1000 years. It puts your time on this planet into perspective very quickly. The church is free to enter, but they do suggest donations and there is a collection bowl near the entrance. If you are close by, I would definitely suggest a visit as it is definitely beautiful.

A church was established on the site, dedicated to St Mary, in the 9th Century. It was followed by a Romanesque church in the 11th century, before the present Church replaced it in the gothic style, being consecrated in 1387. Construction of the High Gothic choir began in 1392. The overall construction was completed in 1535 with the completion of the tower. All of this Gothic wonder is rather hard to find inside, however, as at the end of the 17th, and the beginning of the 18th century, the church was thoroughly redesigned in the Baroque style: pointed arches were replaced with rounded ones and the clerestory windows widened. The interior now is beautifully whitewashed and a riot of Baroque fresco and carving: don't forget to look back at the magnificent organ over the west gallery.

This charming small church, in the shadow of the Cathedral, is the collegiate church of St. Johann…read morein Regensburg. Founded as part of the Collegiate Abbey of St. John in 1127, and dedicated to both St. John the Baptist and St. John the Evangelist, the present building is the third in the site. The original Church was removed to make way for the western extension of the Cathedral, and a Gothic Church was built on the present site. This was remodelled in the baroque style in the 1760s but was destroyed by fire in 1887. It was reconstructed in a restrained neo-baroque style and reconsecrated in 1890. The present Church has a single nave and sanctuary without any internal division: the high altar has a painting of the baptism of Christ by Johann Nepomuk Schöpf (1769).
