Originally a Catholic Church in 1019 AD, the Ptarrant Munster has since the 1500's been a Reformed Protestant Church The earthquake of 1358 wrecked havoc on the red sandstone construction but reconstruction efforts were successful. The church has elements of both Romanesque and Gothic architecture and is considered a heritage site of significance. The two towers of the church standout on the cities horizon . One tower is dedicated to St. George (1372), he is slaying a dragon, albeit small. the other tower is dedicated to St. Martin (1340), who is displayed riding a horse. Entrance to the church is free. however if you wish to climb the 242 steps to the top of each tower it is 4CHF. The staircase is narrow and not always lit adequately. At the top there is a viewing platform. It is an excellent view of the city, Mittlere Brucke and Rhine river. Take note of the statue of Henry the II at the main entrance. There is a crypt which holds the tomb of Gertrude of Hohenburg, who died in 1281 in Vienna. Also in the crypt is the Tomb of Erasmus of Rotterdam. The attached cloister is worth exploring, as is, the Kreuzgang which leads to the Hall of Shields. read more

Not to be missed if you're in Basel. This cathedral is beautiful on the inside, and for CHF 5 per person you can climb all the way to the top, unsupervised, at your own risk. No place anywhere in the US would take on this kind of liability! It is awesome to experience and grants the best views in Basel. Tip: you need a climbing buddy, they won't let you go alone due to risk of jumpers! You can climb to the first balcony, about halfway up, and walk all the way around there, then you can climb up one of the spires or both, as you choose. There is another balcony midway on each spire, and another at the top of each. Be careful. The steps are small if you have big feet like I do (US size 11.5). Combined with a mild fear of heights and a mild discomfort in tight spaces, this was both an exhilarating and terrifying experience for me. But well worth it anyway. If you have extreme claustrophobia or extreme acrophobia, don't do it. Bring a good camera. read more

Easily my favorite attraction in Basel. Climb ALL the way to the top of the tower for some fantastic views. The cathedral itself (and the chapel underneath) are fairly nice as well. It has more sandstone than most major European cathedrals so that gives it a distinct desert flavor. read more

Gorgeous cathedral in Basel. Did not climb the steps but I believe you can do it here. Like many of the cathedrals it is beautifully built and lots of details on the outside. I love old churches and there is no shortage of them in Europe and each one is unique is some way. Beautiful architecture and awesomely quiet inside; it's great place for the weary to find solace. You can climb the tower in pairs for CHF 4 each. A large terrace is located behind the cathedral overlooking the Rhine River. There are stairs leading down to the water where you can take a small boat for a fee to cross it. read more

Worth the trip to Basel just to see this cathedral. The steps are difficult. The young, old, and out of shape need not attempt it.
