Around since the 1500s, this is a must see site while visiting Basel. Not only is the cathedral extremely beautiful and has many sites to see but it's also centrally located right by the Rhine River and is surrounded by other famous landmarks and must visit sites. Entering the cathedral is free, but if you want to go up to the tower, which we did and I highly recommend doing, you pay 4 CHF, which is worth it. At the top there are great views of the city and you can really get a true appreciation of how well built the cathedral is. I especially like the pattern on the roof and how it almost contrasts with the Gothic style, but works amazingly well in the end. There are a lot of great photo opportunities here as well as some very interesting history to learn. I highly recommend for any visitor or local. read more

This cathedral is nothing particularly special. It has an impressive size & decent vaulting & some post medieval stained glass but is on the plain side. If you've been to other cathedrals, the main reason to come here is to see Erasmus's tomb. The crypts look promising with 13th century frescoes but they're closed when the heating turned on. On the up side, entrance is free for the church itself. read more

A formidable-looking church, the Munster serves as the centerpiece of the town square near the river. We were here during the holiday season so got to enjoy the Muster surrounded by the markets and giant Christmas tree, a truly beautiful sight. It is a nice time to explore the Munster in its entirety, be sure not to miss the back walkway area where you get a lovely view of the river. read more

For my the No.1 sight in Basel. The famous Basler Münster. Sitting on the hill in the old town, overlooking the whole city. Also nice to spot it from the "Mittlere Brücke" for some good pics. It's been here for about 1000 years (with some changes of course). Originally a Catholic cathedral and today a Reformed Protestant church built in Romanesque and Gothic styles. It's quite a sight and it's nice to just be/sit here on this square and to look at it. But be sure to go inside and also out back, where a small park with nice views is waiting for you. read more

I have been looking forward to seeing this historical beautiful church since we started planning our trip several months ago. Finding out one of the cities Christmas markets was here made it a simple choice for us. This imposing building built on the hill above the Rhine River is incredible. The beautiful red sandstone construction adds to its beauty. We toured the inside and were also able to climb the bell tower. The climb isn't strenuous, but it is steep.., narrow, and has a couple of low spots to crack your head on if you aren't careful. The 100+ steps lead to a narrow balcony that you can walk around. Did I mention it is very narrow? It is! The view is worth it though. From the river side around to the city, it is spectacular! read more

Basler Münster was a fascinating place to explore. It's not a far walk (although uphill) from the shopping area on Freie Str that draws a lot of tourists and is well worth a visit. The outside is an interesting red color (thanks to sandstone), which gives it a distinct look. Once you have finished looking around inside if you go to the gift shop you have the ability to pay a nominal fee (I think five Euros) to enter a secured area for an unforgettable climb. While I really enjoyed this I would strongly discourage anyone with mobility issues or a severe fear of heights from doing it. You start off with some pretty steep, small cement steps. That transitions to standard steps for several stories. After that there's a pretty sketchy transition onto a wooden platform to get to even steeper, smaller steps. That takes you to a door outside to a very narrow walkway that lets you take in the views outside. If you want to press on you can go up several more stories in pretty dark concrete spiral stairways. When you make it all the way to the top you're rewarded with the most spectacular views of Basel. I don't like heights but I'm so glad I experienced this. read more

If you've ever been to the Strassburger Dom, and stared in wonder at the figures flanking one of the grand entrances, then I would recommend that you visit the Basler Muenster for a bit of 'compare and contrast'. On our visit the figures at the main entrance were undergoing a cleaning, so we could not view them. What we could do, however, was take a gander (up close and personal) at the 'Gossfiguren' that stood at the back of the church. On display were both the 'Verfuehrer' und 'Jungfrau' pairs of the Basler Muenster and Strassburger Dom. Heinrich II and his 'Kaiserin' from both the Basler Muenster and the Bamberger Dom were also on display. Now I'm keen to visit Bamberg, and see the figures in person! The church is as lovely as one might expect, and easily accessible from various trams (the no. 2 comes immediately to mind). Basel, in general, is easily navigated via both tram and bus. I was on a walking tour of Basel in early November 2017 and this was one of the stops. The building is fascinating as all these 1200 cathedrals are plus this one has some great stories like why the sandstone are different colors, the dragon under Plexiglas in the cathedral, the secret room full of 1500 treasures not discovered until 70 years ago and more. There is of course a tower to climb that we did not do but enjoyed the relaxing view of the Rhine From behind the church. Great view of the river banks and the city from this high point and below the ferry crossing on its cable. Beautiful windows and carvings. There is a cloister next door with a few lovely left over art pieces from a show in the Marketplatz. Small gift shop inside. Needed a little more time to really "check things out". Neat place to explore. They still have services here but also have concerts and such. read more
