She never went deeper... I prefer to not have foreign objects in my body so when I opted to have it removed for my menstrual issues, she LAUGHED in my face and said "good luck!" As in, "I know you'll fail!" Well, I didn't fail. I went to my Naturopath and she gave me a massive blood test revealing extremely low progesterone (causing major inflammation) among many other deficiencies (easy to find online after some time and research on my end as well...). My Naturopath then offered several suggestions in terms of herbs, vitamins and nutritional remedies. I can confidently say my Naturopath was on my side, helping me dig deeper. Dr. Pendergrass was more interested in trying to put a Band-Aid remedy on my inflammation that would only help her pay her bills. I actually don't fault her too much for this, as this is what you get from most Med schools -- cover it up until something else happens and then prescribe more pills or intervention until it all spirals out of control and your hormones are out of whack the rest of your life or you opt to get a hysterectomy... because, what other options are there that far down the rabbit hole? I haven't been back to Dr. Pendergrass and am so thankful I listened to my gut. Modern medicine has its benefits, don't get me wrong. I like her as a person... she's sweet and kind. But when it comes to women's hormones -- don't just listen to one doctor.

If you are looking for a physician who will listen to you, advocate for you, and take your pain seriously, I strongly recommend Dr. Pendergrass. I felt respected and heard throughout all my interactions with her. I had been living with bad period pain and was diagnosed with fibroids by a different doctor who referred me to her, but I figured that excruciating monthly pain was just the price of having a uterus and I should just live with it. During our first consultation Dr. Pendergrass encouraged me to not downplay the pain I was in and gave me facts and information that helped me decide to go forward with the hysterectomy, which was an option I hadn't even considered before talking to her. When I had concerns up until the morning of surgery, she took the time to discuss and answer my questions fully. The surgery went extremely smoothly, and the post-op pain at its worst was less than half of what I had previously experienced every month. Dr. Pendergrass responded very quickly to all of my questions through the patient app both before and after surgery. She is honest, funny, she listened to me, and and she introduced me to treatment options I didn't know were available to me. My life is so much better and wish I would have seen her years ago!

The appointments with OB's can last anywhere from 5-15 minutes and you get basic attention and a fat bill afterwards. Dr. Pendergrass was my gynecologist for over a decade, and I saw Dr. Bird multiple times when Dr. P…read morewas out of the office. When Dr. P told me she wasn't going to be practicing any longer, I nearly broke into hives (more on that later), until she told me that Dr. Bird had agreed to take me as a patient - the relief I felt was like I'd been holding constant tension in my jaw, shoulders and upper back for as long as I could remember and someone just showed me how to relax - the solace I took from that statement sounds outsized, but when you're a female managing a genetic disease that manifests as if it's multiple, individual diseases, it is very hard to find doctors that understand and - this part is so important to me - **listen**. Dr. Bird is empathetic and seems to actually care for her patients' well-being going forward, true preventative/proactive care wherever possible. Reactive care should not be as widespread as it is, but, it's infuriating to deal with when I come across other doctors. Not only was scheduling easy and the staff kind, but they actually knew me, which made me feel better about my care being in their hands. Dr. Bird was always attentive and listened with concern (even when I got off-topic, because, I do that, a lot, especially since medical science has been a special interest of mine since I was a kid). I never felt anyone was being condescending or shaming me for making an appointment, or for needing to be seen. While this seems like it shouldn't need to be said, it's unfortunately more common as one might think. It is also a very big deal for me since, as much as I love medical science as a topic of study in a theoretical sense, I am absolutely terrified of doctors! I had been asking Dr. P if she felt maybe a specific thing was worth trying, and then when she agreed, I panicked. She left the room to get paperwork and less than two minutes later, she returned to find my neck and chest covered in hives - I was intensely concerned that my suggestion would end up being wrong and she'd be disappointed in me. That's how severe my fear of doctors is; even when I'm with a doctor I know and trust, hives can still happen if I get nervous enough. If I have a doctor I know and trust, I won't see another one in the practice - I will wait. I have waited months when I could have had a same-day appt, because I wanted *my* doctor. Dr. P had prepared ahead of time for me to see Dr. Bird and told me that she was patient and nice and would listen to me (pretty sure Dr. P had figured out I was afraid of doctors by this point). Dr. Bird was just as lovely as Dr. P said she would be, and I'm so glad I'm her patient now, instead of trying to find another random gyn that would understand why someone in their late 30s would be in surgical menopause for ~15yrs. Anyone needing a gynecologist would be excellent hands with Dr. Bird - she's knowledgeable, empathetic and understanding.

Her assistant Elizabeth and her colleague Christine, who work in the Portland office while she's in surgery or at the Tualatin office, are kind, thorough, and very helpful. If you have advanced gynecology concerns, or you need gender affirming hormones, Dr Bird is a wonderfully reliable provider.

I found the office staff to be very short, not particularly welcoming or kind. At first, I felt well cared for by Dr. Zaander. She diagnosed me with a rapidly growing fibroid and we decided immediate surgery was my best option, to remove both the fibroid and my uterus. She did the surgery. It was quite serious, I had to have a c-section due to the fibroid's size. After several months of recovery, my healing was slow and I had alarming symptoms. I started doing some research and came to suspect that my bladder had been damaged by a surgical tool during surgery and that there was hole in my bladder-called a fistula. I brought my concerns (using the word fistula) to the doctor's attention in both an email AND during an office visit. She refused to to admit that a fistula could be possible and kept saying "give it time" and "keep doing kegels" and was dismissive of my concerns. She tried to rush through the appointment until I INSISTED that she refer me to a bladder specialist. A week later, the specialist diagnosed a fistula after a five minute exam, and that's when Dr. Zaander abruptly ended all communication with me. After that first surgery, I suffered for nine months with the fistula before I could have corrective surgery. I've since talked to two other people who have had negative experiences at this office, feeling like they were not listened to. Had I been taken seriously, I would have nine months of my life back. I missed a lot of work and suffered needlessly because a doctor didn't want to admit error.

Choosing an OBGYN is an extremely personal decision, and one that can be very nerve-wracking for a lot of women because it does place you in such a vulnerable position. Yes, Dr Zaander's bedside manner is a very welcome change, not just for those of us who have been getting our annual exams for years, but she is also the perfect doctor for anyone who is feeling nervous about going to their very first visit, or even those who might have a lot of anxiety about the overall experience in general. Her calming nature is guaranteed to instantly put each and every one of her patients at ease, both old and new alike. I wholeheartedly recommend Dr Zaander 100%!
