I only took lessons from David for three or four months. At that point I'd been mostly self taught…read moreand learned stuff off the internet. From David, I learned a lot about basics of forming chords and a little music theory. But the lessons didn't necessarily connect to each other: each week seemed like an introduction to new territory that would be forgotten the following session, where some new exercise was introduced. I'm sure that if I'd kept at it for years it would have come together. He did push me to learn all the notes on the fret board, which has of course been useful. In my half hour, David did spend a lot of time talking conceptually, but it was hard sometimes for me to put into practice.

I took lessons from David for 10 years and have lots to say about his teaching abilities! I think…read morehe's great! He seemed to know just the right way to push a busy adult student (job, family). He was always very understanding when other things in my life kept me from practicing and could generally be flexible with my schedule when needed, yet he always kept me interested and motivated. (I never once considered quitting my lessons, even though they required an hour's commute each way.) He had a good touch at suggesting music that would entice me and keep me going. My lessons were always fun, and we became good friends through the years, along with our spouses. I would sometime show up at my lesson wanting to talk about things going on in my life, most notably some of the challenges of living with a teenaged son. I felt that David had wise suggestions or comments, a good perspective. He would tell me about interactions with some of his challenging students, leaving me with the sense that he was probably a very positive influence on them. When we had a wedding celebration for our daughter a few years ago, David was the only live musician we considered having, and his music added a lovely touch to the atmosphere of a very fun party. It's been almost 11 years since I stopped lessons from David and moved away. I've continued playing, more than ever. I enjoy playing at coffee shops and gallery openings, where my music is well accepted. Now that I have the luxury of more time, I often play for hours a day. Something I've really noticed is how much I still sometimes hear David's voice in my head - not just instructional comments, but thoughts about playing, about one's development as a musician, ideas that continue to fall into place and make so much sense to me, especially over time. I see that continuing influence as a sign of a excellent teacher, and I am very grateful for it!
