I had a very unprotessional experience as a new hire. I was also a repeat customer prior to being hired, which makes this even more disappointing. My first day (Monday December 29) I spent about 7 hours shadowing employees, asking questions, and helping where allowed (changing animal water and sweeping). I was not trained or given the opportunity to actually perform the job, nor was I given any feedback. When 1 came in for my second shift on Friday, 1 clocked in and was immediatelv told by the shift lead that they "didn't think I was the right fit" and to clock out. I drove 45 minutes to get there and was there for less than two minutes. No explanation was given, despite not being trained or allowed to work independentlv. This conversation also happened in front of several customers and employees, which was embarrassing uncomfortable and extremely unprofessional. I later texted the manager asking for clarification and never received a response. Because of how this was handled, I will not be returning as a customer and would not recommend this location. New employees deserve basic professionalism, communication, and respect. read more

When we bought them and took them to the vet and had their stool samples checked, we found out that they had the parasite. On September 24th, 2025 I and my two roommates who are only 18 went in and bought 2 ferrets thinking this place was perfect and treated all their animals well, the price for 2 ferrets was 900$ and we where mostly forced to spend an extra 300 to buy 'essentials' for our friends. Day one we had noticed one of the ferrets we purchased was very feisty and running into walls. Took him to the vet a few days later and it turns out he's almost completely blind and extremely aggressive, will bite your face even. I went into the store again to mention what was happening and they refused a refund and told us to contact the Marshall pet food to submit a claim, Marshall will only reimburse our vet bills not anything helping him have a better life, training him, nothing else. Heres a statement from someone who worked here for about 3 months. Don't shop here. Not only are the prices ridiculous, they are a scam. For example, my family bought a German Shepard from a mennonite family for about $600, we have had no problems with her. Here it would run about $6000, they say they do normal vet checks but that's not true. We also have cats that were constantly sick (eye infection, they would diarrhea all over the place) and no one questioned it. You work off commission here but the only way to actually make money is to be manipulative and pushy. A lot of variety in the freshwater aquatics section, but not the best in the city - some fish-specific stores have more. I went to get some ghost shrimp, all of which died within 24 hours. One was dead when I got them home. It also has that old-time pet store stink, and sadly that's associated with selling puppies, which is something that I don't agree with. They also have baby parakeets, cockatiels and conures in open pens where anyone can reach down to touch/hold them. They seemed scared. Same with Guinea pigs and ferrets. Didn't go over to the puppy section because I just can't do pet store puppies, but at a glance they seemed less lethargic than in other stores. Employees were all high school kids that hadn't been working there long. Most weren't too knowledgeable. A high turnover rate seems likely. read more

So today my daughter decided she wanted to buy a parakeet from Petland in Blue Springs. The sign states a free parakeet with the purchase of a cage. The salesman refused to sell it to us stating that we had to buy the $100 or more cage. I explained to him that we had already been in Monday and the lady manager told us the cage was small but would qualify for a free parakeet. (We planned to buy a used larger cage). He basically called me a liar and said he found it hard to believe she had said that. As I was returning the cage to the shelf, I could hear him several isles away talking to another person about me. I would just like an explanation of how a customer walks into a petland and is interested in a bird, (or any animal) get told they can't purchase the feathered friend because an employee has made a deposit on the animal in question, but the animal is still available to interact with. As a customer/guest they should come first especially when they are interested, going to be paying full price, and the animal will be taken home and not be left in the store with a deposit (not a full purchase) by an employee. This to me is personally bad business. Employees should have to make a full purchase taking the animal in question out of the store so a guest doesn't become interested then get told no because an employee made a deposit. Bad business and won't be back because of this, because I don't want to become interested in an animal only to be told no because an employee has made a deposit. You know how picky I am about my 2 babies. I have one who I'm afraid is outgrowing the tiny Kong toy I had for my previous dog. I went into the Petland not expecting much, cause, to be honest with you, most Petlands are blah. This is far from blah. I was helped immediately. (Do I have a Yelp tattoo anywhere noticeable?) The employee was friendly, and knowledgeable. Already I'm sold on Kong toys. This guy even knew how they were designed. He helped me select one, and also helped me select a Kong ball. He promised an easy return, which I need to do cause both toys were too big. The employees were professional, kind and I had to pinch myself that I was in a Petland. They have a cool rawhide selection. My babies love rawhide. So I grabbed a couple of spiral rawhide creations, and went to pay for the toys. In the counter display were professionally designed dog cookies. I mean, these cookies look so good I could eat them myself. They are $2.75, I think a piece. But then the guy suggests, for my teething dog, that I buy a deer antler. Wicked!. Cookies, new rawhide,new toys and a deer antler. (I'd never eat Bambie, ever, but I do understand totally that dogs need things for their teeth.) The deer antler is priced by the ounce. My dog doesn't care about the price. He was happy with just the rawhide. Which lasted about a half an hour. I imagine the cookie will last 10 seconds. read more

Every time I've went in there it's been a negative experience I typically don't shop there but my sister does I went in there yesterday to redeem a coupon to get a box of greenies for her ..there were several employees Just standing around.. the place didn't smell good .. The Employee that I dealt with was very nice there were issues with the computer that were not her fault.. and then when she rang The purchase and the coupon.. the coupon was worth more than the actual product she said I still had to pay sales tax and I said I use coupons like this all the time you don't if there's still money left over on the Coupon ..I told her I would go someplace else to redeem the coupon And purchase the product.. took the coupon went to Petco and the price was a lot less at Petco than Petland they redeemed the coupon and did not ask me to pay for sales tax.. We just made a large purchase at this pet store ($1000's of dollars) on an exotic pet. They refused to take back a toy that was purchased for the pet that broke almost immediately when played with. They said we purchased it and it was not defective. What they were saying is we bought the wrong item for that type of pet. Wouldn't you think that they would have advised that when purchasing the pet? Anyway, to argue over a toy that was probably 1% of the total money spent tells alot about this place. Hopefully we don't have any issues with the pet or I am sure it will be a battle getting them to honor the warranty. Buyer beware. Deal with a private, professional breeder with a good reputation. The worst establishment I have ever worked with! The beautiful dogs at this location are not being properly bread and over bread which is leading to congenital issues. I have had to take two amazing animals to the vet only 2 weeks after getting them just so the vet could tell me they had to be put down due to liver and kidney failure. They weren't even half a year old. This is hard for me and my family. To fall in love with something so amazingly full of energy and life just to have it ripped away from you. Petland Purchasers Be Leary Do Not use the North KC or Bluesprings locations. I am extreamly disappointed in the owner of this location and the North Kansas City location. I have now purchased 2 dogs from the North Kansas City location where on my second visit and purchase I was fed lies on the finance pricing as well as the package deals were all different. First thing I asked when looking for my second dog was what the "payment would look like with both dogs on their finance company". When the young lady returned with the numbers I was shocked. She informed me it would only be close to $15 dollars more to add the second dog to the bill. Seemed off but I have made payments for a year on the other one and I asked her again are you sure this is for both dogs? She replied "yes it's for both dogs". Then I explained the price to my wife over the phone and she said yes as it was only 15 dollars more. Then when I asked about getting the same type of package deal I got the first time she told me they no longer did that type of package deal later to find out they did and I did not get nearly the same amount of merchandise as I did the first go around keep in mind this is for close to the same price for the dog as I payed a year before. Then they tell you you will get a $50 credit "in-store" when you get the dog seen by a veterinarian within a week. Which I did within 3 days of having our new puppy. I Sent their claims group the filled out information and waited close to a month with no change. I contacted the store and talked to the MOD at the time and she credited my profile for the $50. Then I received the first bill and about fell over we went from a bill in the 80-90s to a bill over $170 far from the 15 dollar increase I was told it would be. I immediately called the store where another supervisor said they couldn't do anything about it and to call their claims department. Which I did and was told they do not deal with situations like this that I would have to call the finance group. Which I asked how they could do anything for me when it was the representative at the store feeding me lies on the over all bill. Their claims lady to me that it could be a one time fee deal or something that the financial group could clear up. So I called them and they told me just as I thought that that was the new bill amount and that they couldn't do anything as the error was done at the store level. So since that time frame I have called that location 2 to 3 time now and just left a message with their claims group asking for the owner or the person who has the capability to fix this problem and no one at the store level has ever called back. I was also informed last time I called them that the store manager there was given the decision making ability from the owner. This group is a joke they will lie to you to get the sale and have the worst customer service going by far. They will keep you hanging and give you the runaround till you just give up well thats not me. My next step is to contact the BBB with this same message. Keep in mind if this was a regular purchase like a desk I would have returned it right away but its a family dog and it is not fair to the animal nor my little girls to rip it from our family. read more

So disappointed in this store. I have two dogs (a lab/rott mix and a Poodle) on grain-free dog food that I can only purchase at a couple of stores in the metro area (this store being one of them), a 20 gallon aquarium with tropical fish, and I foster kittens for the SPCA, and this pet store is fabulous - but I will never set foot in here again. I've always somewhat dreaded going here, simply because the staff is SO high pressure - but I'm pretty good and letting them know I know what I'm looking for and I would like to be left alone, however, yesterday I had a return (totaling around $70) and was treated worse than I could have ever imagined. The return was for some aquarium testing supplies that my boyfriend purchased, but then discovered he could get the same thing online for half the cost, so of course he wanted to go that route. I was planning to return his item (with the receipt), and then was going to purchase a $50 bag of dog food for my dogs, as well as some kitten supplies. I likely would have spent well over the $70 return amount of my refund, but I needed them to be two separate transactions because my return had been purchased with cash, and I was making my new purchase with a credit card. From the moment I walked in the door with a sack in my hand, I was treated rudely. At first, I thought maybe the first person I came into contact with was just having a bad day, as he snatched the bag out of my hand and walked in the back room as soon as I explained I had a return. Then I came across another employee who asked if I needed anything, and as soon as I explained that I was there with a refund, her face dropped, she said "oh..." and promptly walked away. Finally, the third employee (Eric) came to the register to handle my refund and was quite rude when I explained I needed it to be two separate transactions. When he printed off the refund form, he set it down in front of me, then literally tossed a pen in my direction - didn't say a word, didn't explain that he needed me to fill out the form, nothing - just tossed the pen at me. I filled out the form and signed in and at this point had still planned to purchase my other needed supplies, but when he didn't even glance up or give me any indication that our transaction had been completed - much less didn't offer to help with my 30 pound bag of dog food, even though I was carrying an infant - I told him I couldn't believe how hateful he was being just because I had a refund. He still didn't look up, then finally looked up like he was shocked that I was speaking to him. I told him I am a regular customer and spend hundreds of dollars a month on my pet supplies and couldn't believe the rudeness simply because I had return. It possibly wouldn't have been quite so noticeable, if not for the fact that these very same employees are over-the-top friendly and helpful if I'm there to make a purchase, no return in hand. It's a real shame, because this is a great store and I would no doubt spend MORE money there if the employees would just back off and let me browse...but now that I see how utterly rude and hateful they are when dealing with returns, there is no way I will ever set foot in that store again. This store does NOT stand by their promotions. They have a program that when you buy 10 bags of dog or cat food you get a free bag of dog or cat food. The envelope given to me has no expiration date nor a disclosure of certain brands of food it applies to. I went in there today to get the free bag of food, as I have saved 10 receipts of the same food that I have purchased. The Manager told me that program was no longer valid, that they discontinued it in July. He refused to work with me as I pointed out that there was not an expiration date on the envelope I was given. Manager also said that there are signs all over the store stating the program is not longer valid. There is not, and who would be looking for a sign stating such? This Petland is definitely different than others that I have been in. They do have a good selection and good prices and coupons. However, they try waaaay too hard. My co-workers and I have ALL been put off of this store after multiple shopping experiences because the sales people are just way too clingy. They are on you the second that you walk in the door. And even if you know what you are after, they follow you and stay next to you the entire time you are shopping. Sometimes I just want to browse, I don't need the pressure of them hovering while I'm picking out a dog toy. I also feel like they always try to talk me out of something and into something else. I have fed my dog the same food for years, I don't want to switch her. But they always treat me like I have never purchased dog food before and need to hear about every single brand out there. The last try that I gave them, I was looking for a leash, the guy asked me if he could show me something, then he just took my dog and put this choke thing on her. My dog was visibly upset and he just kept going with it and I had to ask him to take it off of her. He needed to ask my permission before doing all of that. It's just gotten way too exhausting to shop there. I know that they are trying to be excellent at customer service, but they are taking it way too far. I will never spend a second thought on EVER coming to this store again. From the moment you step into this store you will get a sense that something is definitely not right and I came to learn why. Upon entering the store I was immediately hounded by every employee there; not in a helpful way, but a pushy, buy this overpriced anything way. As weaved through the store, avoiding scattered boxes and garbage on the floor I overheard two employees talking about ME! The conversation was appalling. "She's mine. I already took her dog food up front" "If that's all she's getting you don't get COMMISSION on that" "Yeah, I'll sell her something else too." This is nuts, They make money based on what they can dupe you into buying! After hearing this I decided to just buy my dog food and leave before I became another notch in this snake oil salesman's belt. Upon ringing up the food, which was way overpriced to begin with, I noticed that it rang up $4.00 more than what it said on the shelf! After pointing this out I was met with a smug comment about how I must have looked at the price of a different bag of food. I asked if we could go check and the sales person let out a sigh of irritation and walked off to go check. This was all I could take. I left the food on the counter and left. I would never recommend purchasing a dog from this place. I was set on a certain kind of dog and could only find him here otherwise I had to go through a breeder online who wasn't local and I wasn't wild about that. Their whole "program" is a total scam. They offer a warranty and guarantee that is complete bogus. Basically they just want you to spend money at their store buying their food and unnecessary supplements. Their own vet even told me she wouldn't give her dog the supplements they want you to give them in order for their warranty to be valid. My dog had a respiratory infection from being at their store. I would up spending $400 in medical bills within the first week. They of course wouldn't pay for it even though this was due to being at their facility. Then they told me if I took him to one of their vets they would cover the cost, so I drove 45 minutes to their vet for their ridiculous claims lady, Jennifer, to tell me they wouldn't. PSA: Jennifer is AWFUL!!! I was on the phone crying because my dog was so sick and she was just horrid and rude. I love my dog so much and can't imagine my life without him but if you are able to adopt your animal elsewhere, I would highly recommend it. Horrible horrible place. used to think Petland in Blue Springs was the best but yesterday I discovered they were selling Sugar Gliders, as I have a pair I know a little about them. First they had them in to small of cage, Second they had them on the wrong food, they need protein and fruit not the pellets that was in the cage. Third there was nothing in the cage for them to exercise on or play with. Fourth they said they would live 8 to 10 years, wrong, with the proper diet they will live about twice that long. When I tryed to talk to the sales people they did not seem to care at all about the way these animals were being treated. Always thought Petland cared about animals but it shows how wrong I was, felt so sorry for the animals I don't want to go back and ever see this mistreatment again/ read more
